50 Golden Years

Description
This song should have been titled "Painted Into a Corner"! Started out as a tribute to my parents, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 25th. Well, 6/25/10 came (and went) and I wasn't even close to being done. Then, I contracted the well known and deadly disease (at least to composers) more commonly referred to as "Tweak-itis". 32 (!!!!!!) mixes later, well, I give up, and here is this piece for dissecting pleasure!

Seriously, this piece has been one of the more challenging works I have created. Not that it is all that complex a piece, it has just given me trouble at every turn. I have finally succumbed to its madness. Please listen and tell me what you think - but a word of caution - I am really on the edge, and if you are too harsh there is no telling what I might do.

SO...be honest...no lip service...but be gentle - be kind...ok its late - let me just say I hope you enjoy "50 Golden Years"

listen to you
inner-pianist coming out to play. well first of all, it's a beautiful composition and definitely full of happiness and love. Around 2:30 where your familiar style started the song felt like it really came together. Up to that point, it seemed.....loose. As if all the parts weren't quite in sync with each other. LOVE LOVE LOVE those congobongo thingys - so awesome to hear some more ethnic percussion in your music. really Sig, the second half of this piece is perfect and the first half is beautiful - i would say it just needs a little more balance and tightening up. I recommend attempting that AFTER some sleep, food, and fresh air - in THAT order. :D

Insider view / Outsider view
Sigmund, I think it's pretty normal to have these doubts, I guess people (including me) don't like their voice, their own playing, their creations etc. I think it's a healthy thing though, it allows us to progress.

I guess your insider view causes you some doubts. I'll tell you my outsider view, I'm unaware of the Tweak-itis part so it'd be more objective :-). Take me as just a listener, not a critic, I have never been good at analyzing a song.

I can't hear any disturbing element in this song. It indeed seems to correspond to your style. I really like this kind of music so I find this song very pleasant to listen.

There are cases where I find ratings a little awkward, so I wouldn't be able to tell you "your song is 8.27 / 10 good". But I just would like to say, whenever I am near my own laptop, I'll download it and I will want to hear this song again, I simply like it.

BTW, great idea for tribute as well.

Sig, this is wonderful. The composition is great and the arrangement is equal to the composition. Great dynamics, a wonderful ebb and flow. It was such a pleasure when your dramatic, soulful, and tasteful guitar playing entered. The production and mix are pro in every way. Downloaded.

hey, you have some serious piano chops! what piano are you using here? wondering if it's the JP steinway? it could benefit from something - wish i knew what - lol - effects or something? sigmund, you would LOVE the Ivory piano software! Being a chronic sufferer of Tweak-itis, I can so relate to your pain, but I think all that tweaking has really paid off. I really like the latin-type drums and at the point your guitar comes in, I really know it's you. Your parents must've been thrilled by this tribute!

Nice to see you - thanks for coming by to listen and comment. You are right on - this is the JP Steinway, a piano that feels so nice to play, yet unfortunately ends up sounding like it needs something when recorded - and I haven't figured out what it is yet either (obviously!). Perhaps I will check out the Ivory Piano - sounds interesting, and of course your pianos always sound great.

I know you have mentioned it before so I expected you would relate to the tweakitis syndrome - Karen this has been the worst for me! I just hope it isn't terminal! And my parents have not even heard this yet.

I just don't
feel qualified to critique a piece like this Sig. I can only tell you that I enjoyed it immensely. I love the gradual build-up in the beginning, as well as the various twists and turns throughout. The MOOD is wonderful.

The lead guitar work herein is awesome and tastefully done. Sorry if this comes off as "lip service," but it's how I feel...

Another 50...
Funny, I did the same thing... I wrote a little snippet to attach to a video I made of my parents' 50th party at our house years ago, and ironically, it too was a little piano piece, that eventually grew (AFTER the party, and after a YEAR of tweakitis) into "Lickety Split/Caroline's Bear Rag." This is tons bigger and better than what I came up with... this has a lot of glory and energy, and so it reminds me a little of some of Karen's stuff, you both know how to create great music! I really like it. Always good to hear new things from you.

peice of music here Sig, dont get too tweaky on it, I think it is perfect, but I know your "kind", always, fussin n over thinkin stuff, right? Haha, me too! But you actually sound like you may know what you are doing, me on the other hand, well, not so much.
This is a very special project, so if you feel the tweakies comin on, well there's not much that will stop you from makin it just right. So, go for it! But it's already awesome, really!

This is pretty fantastic stuff - I really enjoy the way you've mixed the piano, "orchestra" and rock guitar. It works really well here. I don't hear anything that I can be critical of at all - I even like the drums, which I can be quite picky about.

This paid off for you in ways you might not even hear until you put it away for a while. Generally I put mine away when I post them here. LOL I guess we've all gone through it at some point. You've made some very nice comments here and I really appreciate it. I think what happens is most of the time our judgment is good, but we lose our sense of perspective, and you are right - sometimes, especially at that point, it is better to back off for awhile and return to it later. sounds good to me. you maybe got a touch of the to close-idous. most of us get that from time to time. i find this has a great composition and performance through out.

the only thing that i would suggest, would bring the bass up a touch for more bottom end (but that is just a minor issue from my end)

Serious piano & guitar chops bear the listener through a varied soundscape. The orchestration makes the piece feel like a film soundtrack. Very nice job. It sounds like it was a lot of work!

Sometimes one can try too hard. This is just fabulous with it's sense of fullness and travelling forward in the first half , then the introduction of synth and guitar along with the bongos brings it all into a wonderful conclusion.... So nice to see you stopping by to listen and comment. I'll agree with you about the piano. I use the jampack Steinway grand, which I LOVE to play, but it always ends up (at least for me) sounding rather, well, like it sounds. I have not found the answer in reverb - I am going to try to add a little harmonic exciter to it next time around and see what happens.

I really like it, Sigmund. Love the dynamic shifts, changes and builds. The layering's effective, too. Then, of course, there's your kick ass guitar solos...they're quite nice, too. :-)

Very nice
Love the melody you have in this. Very gently and emotional. I like the string accents you added to this. The breakdown at 1:30 is great. Love the crescendos. Great ebb and flow. Could hear this as a movie soundtrack. Very cool. I could imagine some higher notes in they keyboard passages in the finale of the song, I think that would add to the energy of the song. Great effort, it shows on this one.

This is wonderful. I know how it feels when you have a complex arrangement like this. There seem to be no end of decisions. This is emotionally moving and really well presented. I love the interspersing of rock instrumentation along with the orchestral. The guitar is HOT. If you really want to tweak this, I would advise putting it away for a while. I wouldn't personally know what to suggest as I just love it.

what an arrangement
This just climbs and soars then brings you back down to earth with some very tasty leading! I think all the madness paid off sometimes when I get to that point I have to just put the song away for another day. A new day and fresh ears make a big difference. Like how you end it, the back ground fades out into piano that then distorts itself when it goes out!

Those tweaks most certainly paid off big. At the 55-or-so second mark when the bass comes in, and as everything else gradually does it's as if I just lived -- not just watched or listened -- winter turn to spring. This really feels like a major thanks-giving* to your folks. And I, all of us no doubt, thank you. (Giving thanks, not Turkey Day... that could a whole 'nother song.) BTW I LOVE the string swells with that GREAT lead guitar winding around it starting around 3 minutes in. U B good, Sig.

On Target
This is a very sentimental piece that you should be proud of (and I'm sure your parents are as well). From a technical standpoint, this sounded great in my Bose speakers (KRKs not set up yet), and whatever tweaking you did was for the betterment of the song.

Artistically, I thought this was an emotional composition that ebbed and flowed very nicely. When the drums came in, I wasn't sure I was going to like it, but you took the whole piece in a direction that I really enjoyed. Then at the end, when everything was fading out, I was about to be dissappointed, but in comes a solitary piano to bring everything back to a sentimental feel. I thoroughly enjoyed this piece.

Nice job with this, and what a great gift for your parents. Thanks for posting.
