Maybe He'll Get Lucky - 2010

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This is an updated version of a country song I did back in 1992 and posted here in 2007 when I first came to McJams. I've since taken that version down, and redid this song late last year so I thought it was time to post the new version. There's a lot that changed in the song musically including my debut on the Pedal Steel guitar in this song. It's more of a traditional Country song, with a twist in the story line.

I hope you enjoy "Maybe He'll Get Lucky"

Maybe He'll Get Lucky
Words, Music and Arrangement By Ed Wemmerus

Verse 1

He's thinkin' maybe he'll get lucky, maybe he won't.
Maybe he'll get to take her home, maybe he won't
Or maybe he'll just sit there on that barstool gettin' drunk.
Maybe he'll get lucky, maybe he won't

Verse 2

I can see it in his eyes the way he looks at her.
He's tryin' to figure out a way to get to her
And even though I'm sittin' here right next to her.
He thinks he can take her, away from me

Chorus

Now maybe he feels lucky, maybe he don't.
Maybe he'll be a winner, maybe he won't
Maybe he really wants to find out if I'm gettin' drunk.
Maybe he'll get lucky, maybe he won't

Instrumental verse

Verse 3

As a general rule I'm normally a quiet man.
I try to mind my own affairs as best I can
But there's one thing that I think he'd better understand.
The lady he's talkin' to, is married to me

Chorus

Now maybe he feels lucky, maybe he don't.
Maybe he'll be a winner, maybe he won't
And maybe he really wants to find out if I'm gettin' drunk.
Maybe he'll get lucky, maybe he won't

Well,
I don't think he'll get lucky, I'd say, he might even live through some tight and embarassing moments :-))))))

I really enjoyed the way the context described through the lyrics. Very cool music, lovely guitar work and I also loved how you sung this.

Very much enjoyed Ed, this is beautiful.

I have the feeling that the guys fate is sealed in alcohol and bad judgement. But that's for the listener to decide, since the song merely posts a question.

Thanks again for listening my friend. I'm glad you enjoyed the song and the story.

Glad you enjoyed the song and the music. Had this one around for a lot of years and finally decided to do a total remake of it last year. It sounds a lot better than the original I did in 1992. I don't have the Pedal Steel any more so this was it's maiden voyage and it's last hurrah all at the same time.

Thanks again for listening my friend, and the kind words.

Ed

The only problem about this being so Country is that Country music mostly ain't Country any more. It 80's Rock with a twang and a nasally voice. That means the only people who are gonna like this are the ones like you and me that are old enough to remember when Country was really Country.

Thanks again for listening Terry and the kind words.

It's what we do Jack,
we sing about real life and try to tell a story about it in music.By we I mean people like you, Terry, me and some others here on MJ. Seems like most of what comes out of Nashville these days is fantasy, although not all. There is some good Country being done, but not a lot.

Thanks for listening Jack, and the kind words.

your original thumbprint
I immerse myself in real country for about a month every year... I have for years... I go camp with real bluegrass and country folks twice a year... and the whole drive out and back this is all that I listen to.... the benefit has been great for any songwriting skills that I may possess.. now when I first heard your stuff... you were the most authentic guy around here in this genre... I have watched you post in several styles.... but this genre fits you like an old pair of cowboy boots... far be it from me to try and pigeon hole somebody.... but I always like you best here... Its like I'm hearing your true voice.. and country can be a maligned genre... but not in these ears...

I wonder why you don't have a career in Nashville...

Wow
That was a mouthful Scott. I've never thought of myself in any way other than a guy who likes to make music. I will admit that I do get a lot of personal satisfaction from putting together what I feel is a really good Country song, even when they sometimes aren't so good. So maybe you're right about Country being my true voice, cause it does sometimes feel natural and easy when I'm putting one of these together.

As for a career in Nashville, I applied for a janitors job there once, but they had a waiting lists of Nashville wannabe's standing in a line about a mile long. You can hear a few of them on the radio now, but not many.

Thanks for listening and for making my day with your kind words Scott. Made me feel really good inside and right now I can surely use it.

Dave, I don't know anyone
who's ever been in a Honky-Tonk with his lady that hasn't "been there and done that". Same for the guy on the other side of this story too. I know lots of these guys, and have probably been one myself at least a time or two.

Glad it brought a smile to you face my friend, that was kind of the plan when I wrote it.

Unfortunately, they don't do Country like this in Nashville anymore. The only ones that can even remember it are the ones like you and me who have been around long enough to have heard how it was done back when Country was still Country and not Rock with a twang.

Glad you enjoyed the song Dave and I do appreciate the listen and the kind words.

Thanks Guy
Glad you like how this one came out. I was never happy with the original recording and no matter how I tried to tweak it, it didn't make much difference, hence the completely new version.

As for the Steel, I had to sell it since doing this song for a couple of reasons. One of course, was I needed the money, but the clincher was that my feet don't work well enough any more to be able to play it. I have some motor control issues with my feet, as a side effect of the cancer having spread into my back and spine. I'm still able to walk, albeit some what clumsily, but the fine motor control is about gone now. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted, but I think my Steel playing days are a thing of the past.

Thanks for listening and the kind words my friend.

Very cool. Don't get a lot of country through here so when I hear some, I appreciate it all the more. Very cool. Has a George Strait kind of vibe to the steel (all my exes live in texas). A sentiment all single and even to some extent, all married guys experience. Fun song. Very well done!

Thanks Charles
I've got a bunch of Country songs on my artists page if you like Country, Charles. It's what I'm most comfortable doing these days, although most of my songs are rooted in Country as done in the 70's and 80's.

But that said, I'm glad you came to listen and found something to like about this song. The George Strait comment sits really well in my mind, and is so much appreciated, you have no idea. George Strait is one of my all time favorites, along with Jerry Reed, Merle Haggard, George jones, Buck Owens, and Hank Williams Jr. to mention just a few.

Country is about telling stories that have some basis in reality. Well this ones about the real world in a Honky-Tonks, and what you can expect at least once in you life if you go to them.

Thanks again for listening and the kind words Charles,

I, too, love your pedal steel, but I like everything you do ;-) I understand about the feet though: I have pinched nerves in my back that make my feet go to sleep. Makes it a little iffy walking ;-)

Hey Richard,
does that me when I die, they'll come get me and put me in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History as a Dinosaur from the 60's Country era lol ;-) I just try to treat others the way I want to be treated, and respect what they do. Nothin' special about that I'm sure, but thanks for saying what you did, it feels good to hear it.

As for the feet, I have neuropathy in both feet because of the cancer in my back affecting my spinal column. It isn't bad enough yet to use radiation on it because they don't like to use radiation in that area unless they really have to. Once they do, they can't do it again in the same area. So for the time being I'm clumsy and have to watch my step and sometimes use a cane. If that's the worst it gets, I'll be happy, but I suspect it will get worse over time as the cancer progresses. Such is life, we live, we make music, we enjoy, and we die. Happens to all of us sooner or later.

As for the story of this song, Slopartner did come home with the one whut brung her, and she allow me to come home too, but that's another story. lol It's on a need to know basis, my friend, and I guaranty you don't need to know. ;-)

Thanks for listening and the kind words Richard

Hey there Neil
Actually I had to sell the Steel I used on this. Can't play it any more because my feet lost most of the fine motor control needed to play one. The cancer has spread into my back and is causing the problem with the feet.

Anyway, thanks for listening my friend, and the kind words. I'm happy that you like the way it turned out. Wasn't bad for a first time recording the steel, although I will admit it took a few takes to get it even this good. But it sure was fun playing the Steel while it lasted.

This version is ace,and the pedal steel justs paints it pure country, you do seem to have got the hang of that contraption(no other word for 'em) real well real quick !!

Yeah, this ones an oldie but a good, especially since I did the remake of it. As we learn we find ways to make them better, hopefully. Unfortunately I had to sell my Steel Guitar cause I couldn't play it any more. My feet have lost the fine motor control needed to manipulate that darn contraption. But life goes on and we keep doing what we can to make music in other ways.

Het there Roxy
I'm not thinking the guy is gonna get lucky, and if fact it might be a very unlucky night for this chap.

Thanks for listening, glad you enjoyed the song, and the Pedal Steel part. I appreciate the kind words on that.

Be well and be cool, Roxy

Hello Ron
Where did I get that drum track. Well, I wrote most of that drum track back in 1992 on my Yamaha SY99 synth/Seq. Then I supplemented it with a 60's shuffle drum set that I think was on the Rhythm Section JamPack from Apple. I layered the 60's Shuffle over my drums to help fill it out and to use the fills in the Shuffle drums to augment what I had.

Glad you liked the song Ron and I appreciate the kind words and the question about the drums.

Be well and be cool,

Ed
