MJ is back online and it comes with a new psycho-acoustic journey from _nderscore and friends!
There's lots of cool effects tucked away in this. It feels a bit scattered, as though it isn't exactly sure what it wants to be, but it does seem to evoke a narrative.
Oh, yeah... giant alien ships drift down to disappear beneath the dark surface of the ocean. The intellect of the whales is awakened, they gain telekinetic powers, the waters rise, and a new age of aquatic dominance begins on planet Earth. [ Reply to This ]
Awesome.... &mdash 01/14/05 - 01:09:23 AM
..use of sound, effects, and general wavelength.
Experimental ventures like these are extraordinary to
listen to when they are done so well.
As to what I see? Why I'm hurrying down a crowded street
on a dark and stormy night, late to some intergalactic
choir rehearsal.
And darnitall, they've started without me!
Thanks for the fun! :) [ Reply to This ]

You should do sound design for films. This would go
great with one of the new wave of Japanese horror
movies that have been coming out lately. Very cool. [ Reply to This ]

Of course, I can't take all the credit. It was a real
rewarding experience collaborating on this piece.
Listening to the initial offering from _nderscore and Stun
Nutz, I was thrilled that I could respond musically and add
to the piece. My additions were subtle; only accentuating
the textures already in place. Much work was done by
Stun and _ndies to mix it and get it finished and I thank
them for it. Sounds great. (I won't vote--I am a bit
biased).
To me the image that was constant in my mind was a dim,
concrete parkade. And then like a dream it morphs into
something else, more ethereal. Very much like a dream. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks... &mdash 01/14/05 - 07:56:34 AM
...but I can't take too much credit either...! The whole piece started with
_nderscore's dark synths and clicking rhythm. I just added some
ambient sound effects and manipulated voices. Pooey added some
additional rippling synth tones and the chorus, but it was _nderscore
who re-arranged and wove the whole thing together...he did most of the
tweaking/adjusting...the credit goes to him! We had fun with the art,
too... too bad it's not letting us upload it yet!!! [ Reply to This ]
well, that was fun.. &mdash 01/14/05 - 09:02:22 AM
the neat thing about this is that you can stop the song at about any point &
hear content by all 3 of us. this would have been a very different song if one
of us were missing.. a 'whole being greater than the sum of it's parts' kinda
thing. the industrial/traffic sound samples were all Stun, & the choir, fuzzy
bass lines & 'car keys' were all Pooey. we went back & forth on some of the
mixing ideas. i had fun after we layered everything.. as i tweaked the
volumes, i kept uncovering more & more sounds-there is so much stuff in
there.. [ Reply to This ]

The female vocal "ahhhhhhhs" are really a trip. I think the

Definitly not something I would listen to more than once

Lots of interesting textures here.
It might have been even MORE interesting had you varied
the background beats to create a contrasting tempo and
mood somewhere in the middle, but this was pretty cool
regardless.
This was like looking at a piece of abstract art, trying to
make sense of the seemingly random dots, daubs,
slashing lines on the canvas.
This piece definitely stretched the ears. But not to the
point of pain. [ Reply to This ]

I guess my imagination isn't what it used to be, for instead
of cosmic choirs or alien abductions, over three back-to-
back listenings, it kept reminding me of passing through
the Atlantic subway station here in Brooklyn during

Nonetheless, I think producing these kinds of sonic

Arachnid life forms work dutifully in the complex even
though the blue-green fluid is oozing up out of the floor

continue as they and the machines they are using are
consumed. Angelic spirit creatures fly through every so
often to watch but they do nothing because of the way
they've been treated by the arachnids in the past. [ Reply to This ]

intensity of something like this tune does to someone like

Just had to listen to this one again after not having done so in a
while. And its interesting how each time I listen I could swear
some changes have been made to it. But It's the same, just
hearing new things each time. It's really neat that way.
Hearing it makes me think we gotta do this again (I think I said
that last time I posted), but it also made me think of music versus
the visual arts. With the visual arts we see the whole work all at
once, but with music, we only ever actually experience the
smallest fraction of the work at any one time. Its like scanning a
painting one horizontal sliver at a time. This way, the complete
work can only ever exist in one's mind. And in having the work
revealed this way, our perception of the piece is going to be
flavoured by our own experiencing of it, and our recollection of
that "dance" is the only way the song truly exists: as a unique
sequence of memories.
So, needless to say, I am reminded of certain elements, and also
exposed to elements I have no recollection of. That is why this
piece is so fresh on each listen.
Oh, and there are some neat effects.
_nderscore, I will cook up another idea and e-mail you and stun.
