Description

This is the fifth installment in my 2010 collaboration with saxophonist Woody Mankowski. This is the shortest track, a 3 minute funk tune utilizing Woody's layered saxes, my layered keys/organ, and my placement of several horn samples and some MIDI work. It has a Tower of Power, Maceo Parker, Brecker Brothers feel. The name comes from both the derivation of my last name and the Muller's Wheel that is a genetic mutation evolution variation concept, and as this project kind of evolves from 1040s jazz thru bop into modern funk, I thought it would be a nice double entendre. I hope the umlaut doesn't goof up downloads. If you download this, let me know if it reads correctly in iTunes. Thanks.

It's astounding how Woody's hits are so precise on this and other tracks. He's such a joy to work with. Now, this is what the stuff we played at Le Bar Bat actually sounded like, when the full band pulled out all their axes.

The song art is a photo of myself wearing my Woodstock hat filtered through a cool new app I've been using on my iPad: PhotoTropedelic. It makes everything into a Peter Maxx type image, with a bunch a variables you can work with. Great fun. I thought this image looked like some of the 70s funk album covers, made me think of Sly Stone.

Thanks. I think one of the greatest tracks of all time is Will It Go Round In Circles by Paul Weller from his fab album Small World Big Band. Whenever I think I've achieved something that grooves, I play that and am humbled. But the whole round/circle thing in that titles was also behind the title I chose for this tune, a sort of very veiled homage.

Compared to Woody's blow out monster chops soloing, I do feel like little bee's knees playing in his shadow. I prefer to created the keys groove and stab with my organ with accents that bring out his genius to competing with him on a track like this. So I hope my solo, which you nicely commented on (thanks), at least complements his phrases and makes his re-entrance at 2:22 that much cooler. I'm glad you enjoyed it, for sure. Thank you.

Thanks, Michael. Yeah, the trumpets are all MIDI but with Woody layering on his saxes, it sounds "real." I panned them each just a tad to create a nice section feel, I hope. I was surprised by the "where's the tune" comment too, but everyone comes at things from a different angle, different expectation. This is normal for instrumental funk, especially from the jazz side, but my EWF comment might have made expectations. Its just that I played with several of those guys in an instrumental setting, and this is how they played, as the horn section. I modeled it after them. Thanks for checking in. Amazing cool funky beats, and ditto sax phrases.

You have an extremely cool way of handling those keys mr. Mueller. Super cool sounds and creative melody lines almost hiding inbetween the lines.

Thanks. Actually, that's the essence of the whole project. Musical joy. And I like the way you heard melodies hiding between the lines. I never like playing scales or exercise sounding licks, but melodic ones. And I make my players do the same. Its too easy to fall back onto scales and scaled intervals. I'm glad you noticed the fragments of melodies in the licks.

very very catchy and authentic piece of funk mayhem. its difficult to find a criticism. very well produced, full of intense energy. i suppose its maybe not quite a song but far far far more than a jam. with music like this its the feel that grabs you and throws you you about and this does just that. a nice slice of high class starsky & hutch (meant in the nicest way). excellent groove and playing all round. would have loved to hear a juicy guitar solo with mind blowing bends and anger. great stuff. cheers

Your comment about the cheesiness of certain phrases made me smile. After studying several of what I recalled being my favorite funk tunes from the 70s, I couldn't believe how cheesy many of them sounded; in a good way, of course. It kind of added to their appeal. So I was going for an authentic sound and thought some of those phrases were too cheesy, too, but hoped they would be more a touchstone than a turn off. But I totally get what you mean. Thanks for enjoying the overall vibe. (Didn't I send files to you to play over? I was going to...)

Your recording setup for this song? I would love to know if this is logic,or GB, and are all the drums live? Also, little things like the guitar rig, bass setup, etc..
This is an extremely clean mix. How was it mixed, mastered, etc. For me, every song is an opportunity to learn something new about mixing, and every bit of info a student of music can get is information well learned.

You keep pushing the boundaries, Tobin.
Another absolutely excellent tune with all the panache of a couple pros pulling out all the stops and loving it all the way. Superb sax, of course, but your organ back-up and other do-dads add such an intricate accompaniment throughout AND I never get tired of listening to all that's going on in the background.
(And now a challenge: a ballad-like number with sax solo and keyboards that's down tempo and smooth...all as a complement —or maybe even compliment—to the rest of this funky music.) You guys sure can play!

I've noted on the other tracks of this project the players in the quartet. This large ensemble sound, however, is mainly laid in by me. All keyboard parts (I think are there at least 5 different keyboard instruments), drum loops and samples, guitar loops and samples, and bass line were played in using MIDI and my many plugins (see below). Woody doubled my horn hits with 3 layered sax lines and two solo lines. Thanks for your comments, ears, and appreciation.

Horn sampling
Thanks for your comments. Through the years, I've accumulated a dizzying array of plugins. I use MOTUs Symphonic Instrument samples with which I can control tone, reverb, attacks, and a bunch of other parameters. I use Garritan Jazz and Big Band plugins for the bari sax and horn hits that sound like real funk brass, but usually play in each instrument separately cuz I usually don't like the harmonics phasing of section samples; I can also control subtle panning that way to create my own sense of the ensemble size and placement. I also use Kontakt which enables me to fly in all sorts of samples.

The drums took a lot of time. They are a combination of loops and MIDI. Most of the loops have been altered in Live, changing downbeats and adding variations from multiple loops to add to the sense of real person variation. I spice the grooves and percussion hits with MIDI drums, being careful to match panning and reverb placements.

In my head, however, all these samples are real people. And, indeed they are/were. I'm just giving them new life. Unlike the tracks I've shared from this project up until now, this track is not just Woody and I as composers, but Woody and I as players, too.
