People Under Pressure

Description
just some notes here. the beginning is just two guitar tracks. delays and a volume swell pedal can do wonders. also i used a korg monotron at the end of the first section and in the third section. it's a small hand held device that creates some early synth sounds.

Lyrics
People Under Pressure

are you under pressure
and cracking from the strain
the wanna be actors
staging out a play
and they feed you lines
that they want you to say
will you bite the bullet
a smile on your face

i don't want to live this way
i don't want to play this game
i don't want to be restrained

sitting on the front line
the enemy face to face
feel a little empathy
you know they feel the same
are you getting by
or living out your dream
are you just surviving
or do you want to scream

i don't want to live this way
i don't want to play this game
i don't want to be restrained

are you under pressure
are you under pressure or living out your dream
will you bite the bullet
a smile on your face

Nice one Vic! The deceptive intro into the very melodic sung parts is very cool.

I like the mixture of clean, acoustic and beafy guitars. I definitely want a Taylor guitar some day.

Great song man.

Lots of Cool...
touches in this production, Vic. Specifically, your choices of various sounds and textures — and the timing of their appearance are very interesting and appealing, suggesting the possibility for a much broader, extended version of this song.

I very much like how this sonically builds at the start, evoking the image of water gently coming to a soft boil, then quickly growing to a full rolling boil. Given the title and the lyrical content, it made me anticipate an explosion... or at least a boiling over, as we moved into the story.

I certainly began to anticipate it in the 2nd verse, as it rolled into "are you just surviving or do you want to scream."

A dramatic stop at that point, followed by a hardy primal scream, leading into — and melding with — the chorus would have given this a more emotional jolt.

None of this is said to diminish what you've produced here, Vic. The fact that it set my mind thinking in such emotional and theatrical terms actually praises your work. It got me involved.

Very cool stuff. ;)

"I don't want..." chorus is spectacular. You voice sounds great on it and it's very catchy, too. Of course, the build up at the beginning sets this up quite nicely, Sounds as if it's the beginning of an album.

The break at around 2:40 is my fave.

Very, very cool tune Vic

Jiipencrappers!
Vic, I need to start coining new words to reflect how cool your stuff is. After spending the last six months flying you around saving the city as a sweet, heroic and unflappable hero, I'd sort of slipped away from your truly amazing songwriting.

Your guitar heroics are always 'up there' but it never fails to blow me away how you can craft such crisp, tight tunes that always hit that sweet spot balance of elegant simplicity and complex texturing. And after 131 songs, yet!!!!! There's always a strong sense of what drives a song forward, what makes it tick... never just the guitar, or the keys, or the lyrics, or your vocals... all those pieces are cut just perfect and polished, but it never sounds **too** polished. There's blood and fire burning through every note, you can feel it with your fingers against the wall.

Dunno how you do it, Vic, but you did it again.

Ready to blow
Love the concept. Really nice arrangement, song art, dramatic flow. So much pressure, from several perspectives, in today's world. The lyrics were kind of about something else, tho, something more fundamental; which kind of surprised me. Almost mid-life crisis claustrophobic. No direct mention of bills, bosses, kids, cliques, tea parties... The lyrics, tho, are secondary to your over-all sound wash, the really nice concept you nailed. Nice track. Thanks for sharing yet another gem.

Your best yet?
Love that delayed intro, it kind of breaks the standard "airplay" rules of diving right into the lyrics to take us into your land of dramatic tension. This is so cohesive and strong, it might be your best yet in a catalog of good stuff. And to answer your question: Yes I am under pressure. Who's not these days? Perfect tune, Vic.

Wax Trax
was "the" cool record store here in my home town of Denver back in the late 70's and early 80's. The guys working the counter wore euro/mod thrift store clothes, were usually condesending, and very pale, but they always played some funky wierd new band we never heard of, and we always hated to ask "who is this?". This song put me right back in that record store again!

Great song Vic! Thanks for sharing!

Tried
to listen this Vic, but it(the player) just doesn't play for me. Though judging by the amount of comments and fans I just know this must be special, cheers M

Loved this
Reminds me a bit of some of U2's earlier stuff, the way it just sort of "arrives". I guess soundscape is the word I'm after. Thought the vocal delivery was cool and the harmonies lift it nicely. Great tune! The vocals remind me a little of David Bowie (in a good way!)

Another cool song
I wouldn't be quick to say your best like many have said, but that is only because you have so many awesome rockers in your list. Cool retro sound on this track with elements of 80's pop rock and some 60's too. It is rare to hear a blend of those two styles. Awesome as usual!

Vic Holman Rooolz...
the forum told me so.... and it didn't lie. But I already knew this as I fanned it ages ago.
I'm a sucka for intros like this.
Wicked song Vic. That chorus is magic
Vic Holman said 972 days ago (September 23rd, 2010)
Thanks Ed.
the intro is something i have goofed around with for years when i'm just jamming around the house, so it took a while to finally put it on a song. thanks for the listen!

sure if I'd like this at the beginning but this song really turns into something special. That chorus is ace. Great guitars and vocal line. Top production. Pro job, Vic.

the intro is spectacular Vic. Then you move into more familiar Vic-territory - poppy, thoughtful, cool progression and melody. Nice harmonies, great guits, and a very cool concept for the whole song. "Art rock" seems to sell this a little short to me ...... "epic rock" maybe ;)
Cheers from Oz!

i thought i was overdue on shaking up how i put a song together. i almost was going to extend this even farther, but i don't think most people can hang in there after 5 minutes.

I love the "I-I" vocal moments...
That seems to be stretching the boundaries of the Holmanesque in a neat way... Pushing the melody, and decorating it with harmony....

I also really like the fingerpicked middle bit with faint voices and the slide guitar....

Vic Holman said 969 days ago (September 27th, 2010)
Thanks Ed.
the chorus was a spontanious thing of coming in on 3 parts. the high harmony almost blew an artery in my head. if i knew i was going to that from the start i would of probably dropped the tune down a step. :-)

same story as i just mention to Ed about the chorus. holding the long notes and high harmony was a killer with 3 vocal tracks going. i'm just glad i didn't add a 3 chorus.
