Dead Ends with James Holliday and Rok41

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This is a follow up on http://www.macjams.com/song/62502. The initial version was sounding to much like "Fifteen minutes Old" from Snow Patrol, so I decided to change the theme, and this is the result up to now. The bass part is from Chris Flynn (rok41) and is so great, and James added a beautiful vocal with good melody lines. This is still a work in progress so we are open for suggestions!

Lyrics
I don't know where to go from here,
which way to turn?
Seems every time I try another direction
I run into road blocks or dead ends

So Help me find my way
before I make another mistake
help me forget this pain
so I can stop feeling this way!

I know you're well aware of my dreams,
my hopes and fears
Seems every time I try to get to know you
we somehow get sidetracked, it falls through

So Help me find my way
before I make another mistake
help me forget this pain
so I can stop feeling this way!

I don't know where to go from here,
which way to turn?
Seems every time I try another direction
I run into road blocks or dead end

Excellent
This is one really great collab!

Well done everyone.

I really like the chorus a lot.

jd- your vox are awesome on this one.
I'm assuming Rok41 is on bass but there are no credits. Anyway, very well played by you and Egbert.

Much enjoyed!

Very cool
Great sounding mix on this. So clean and clear. A bit heavy on bass maybe. Very well done. Rok's bass sounds great, Egbert's backer sounds awesome too! James, your vocals sound great. Give me a call James, when you get a chance, I have something that could improve this vocal even further. Great job you guys! Love that long sustained high note James hit in this. Killer work! I have heard this before but with a different backer I think, am I right James? Great effort.

I didnt mean the bass guitar
I meant the overall amount of bass in the 100-400 hz range. It sounds too boomy. I think if you eq'ed the bass track and sculpted it a bit, you could be a clear powerful sound and get rid of the slight boom that is in there.

In other words
You have 2 or more tracks interacting with each other, that is usually what causes that boom in my experience.

Egbert, as I wrote to you several weeks back, you have a completely different take on tones than most people...It is refreshing and I appreciate you asking me to play bass on your composition. JD, I agree with Andrew and recently mentioned this to Egbert, this has a very Peter Gabriel texture to it, nice job! Thanks again guys for including me.

Well I am not aware of that different take on tones, it's not deliberate anyway, but I am glad you like it, and as I said, your contribution is of great value to us, thanks!

Very cool and mellow tune. I like the dreamy soundbed for JD's emotional vocal performance, and Chris your bass is excellent and perfect for the tune. Great collab, and fun to listen to - thanks!

aware of dreams
I like the melodic intervals and vocal style. There are pitch issues, especially with the doubled voice, that maybe could be tightened up. Also, my ears were looking for more rhymes at the end of coupled phrases, which may not mean much, but always makes a song seem more coherent, for some subjective intuitive reason. (It may be how our brains are wired.) And I'd mix the vocals lower into the mix. But this has potential. I like the collab going on. THanks for sharing the versions and growth.

Thanks to
Dani, Carrie, Mark, Sigmund and Tobin! Hey Tobin, I was wondering if anyone would say anything about that pitchy vocal! I'll fix that on the final version, I had a lot of trouble singing this one, not sure why.

Sounds great. This is a nice piece form the 3 of you. Chris, the bass line is very nice. And, Jd, my girl walked in as I was playing it and asked if this was Peter Gabriel. ;)

Concur
Three other folks have made the Peter Gabriel comparison for JD's vocals, and I think it's right on - especially right there at the beginning of the choruses. I've heard him sound like Don Henley also. Must be nice to be able to channel folks like those. I get the feeling the chorus-ending "feeling this way" line might be pushing the outer limits of JDs range, and I wonder if a lower note could have been used.

There were some spots where the drum loops depart from the rest of the performance - never by very much and it always resolves quickly. Still, I wonder if the loops could have been retimed to match?

I do like the contrast between the R&B sounding drums in the verses against the set drums of the choruses ... it provides a nice lift. Being a drum sound snob, I wish the sounds could have been just a little better.

Lovin' the laid back groove and the chord progression. Chris' bass is spot on and really serves the song well. Kudos all the way 'round.

Thank you Jody, Cees and Kevin
for visiting this song, and yes Kevin I was really stretching on this one, my voice was out of shape, I think I could nail it now though, this is another song we are going to re-do, so drums??????
And these peter gabriel references are the biggest compliment I could get, I LOVE his voice and have tried for decades to emulate him, and Don Henley probably even more so! Thank you!
