Description
A message from Bob:
While working on a long overdue collaboration with bud, I soon realized that the book we were both reading had taken control of the direction of our new song. We both seemed surprised and agreed we should let this inspired sound take us where it may. We had no idea it would do tricks to our compass as we neared magnetic north...

bud:
Aurorarama - the new steampunk novel by Jean-Christophe Valtat reached into our brains and took control of our machines. As if drugged we were held in it's thrall, bending synths and drums to it's icy architecture.

Prepare for transport.

Love the lazy drum groove and the ominous low notes. Great percussion track. Great blend of synth sounds that each have a spot in the mix and frequency spectrum. I was waiting for Bob's instantly recognizable voice, but I can't get everything I want. Cool video.

It does seem a shame not to have taken advantage
of those voice lessons Katy got him - but this is cinema - not radio. Bob killed me with his synth parts and I had a blast with the mix - going with my new motto: WWPD? What would particledots do?

I did the video you see hear
the author did the video on the book's website. Seeing that inspired me to find footage and put this together. The circle goes round and round. When JC saw this video he immediately knew the expedition as it was part of his research. It's the Nobile - Amundsen polar fly over in 1926 dubbed Rome to Nome.

At the time of creating the music
there was no video in mind - however it had taken on the feel of a soundtrack. Bob contributed such cool tracks to work with that the breakdown to restart was my way of exploring the range of sounds available. It certainly made the video more interesting to edit.

cool
some pretty massive sounds...
very organic sounding.

Some of the scale was achieved
by doubling the synths and using Spectral plugins like partial glide or harmonizer mixed in with the clean. Also - Bob wrote such a classic timeless melody - almost Celtic - that it lent itself to the big treatment - and also gave it that organic quality that I heard at first too.

Wow! I wasn't expecting this from you two.
Really big massive sound that sets the imagination on fire.
Rammstein meets Depeche Mode??
And the sound that's like a choir singing is brilliant.
great mix, great synths, great everything
Great stuff

Thanks Mark -
Bob killed this with his analog sound - and I love messing around with drums. The piece actually started with just the deep heartbeat track. I sent that to Bob for him to work with. What he sent back was amazing. The rest of the drums were built in around the melody.

Zeppelins
One of the cool things about the TV show "Fringe" are the zeppelins floating grandly over an alternative New York City in the other dimension. I love the slowness, the grace, the illusion of power within a post-Hindenburg knowledge of precarious fragility. And then the frozen mountains of solitude, the floating of quite distant earth. All perfectly held aloft be the updrafts of your music. A great ride, guys. Thanks for this.

Is It OK If I Love This Song?
It's always a great experience making music with bud. You never feel smothered with his "sound" but rather saturated in his essence? Does that sound stupid or what? LOL!~

This project started out with a different purpose, but it evolved into a big dark floating thing that hovered above the frozen tundra.

And bud's not kidding, we asked ourselves WWPD? LOL!!

Then, when I went to bed that night and said my prayers, I asked God if I could join APOD. It's good to have high aspirations!

Bob

It took a while to get that balance - glad we seemed to find the right mix. The music happened before a video was in the works - so the drama had to be there without any visuals. Got lucky in finding some suitable footage.

Awesome
visuals come to my mind here, I'm not familiar with this book, but anything in B&W from the early 20th century is an immediate buzz for me, very Jules Vern-esque,commander Cody etc.

Great stuff guys, loved it!

Thus would be great in a movie soundtrack. It has just the right amount of tension going on to keep us at the edge of our seats. When the 2nd half started, I expected something scary to happen. The voices... wow.

Even without the images you supply, this sets the visual cortex a-racing. A very atmospheric piece. Excellent playing and great arrangement. I just think that the reverb on that drum could be slightly thicker.

Massive...
without actually doing it, this is quite a massive number in the sense that it seems to open up a very broad spectrum of visual as well as psychological images. I did not watch the YouTube video, but preferred to hear the number on its own without further commentary. You have created some very cool sounds here, evocative of all sorts of things real and surreal. When you can accomplish THAT in a couple minutes, you have done something quite special, indeed.

Macjams impact
I came across this dynamic collaboration while wandering at random through the Macjams back catalog. Great tones within an immensity of a sound-space.

I first listened to the music. Then perused the extensive thread of comments. Then I went and looked at the video. It's astonishing how watching that old Zeppelin, Fokker and dog sled footage changes the interpretation of the music .. from being something unworldly and space-like .. to a vintage effort to leave the ground and explore the earthbound icy tundra. Then .. I took it one step further .. and ordered up the book on my iPhone. Some days Macjams has that kind of impact.
