Need help on this one. I think perhaps it needs other instruments? Strings maybe?

I like
the minimal approach at the start. I feel that around 2:00ish there needs to be a change. Something different. I'd love to hear a deep minor break in there then as MJ suggested synco the ending vocals and energize the drums.

great tune so far
I could definitely hear some legato string section stuff going here in the background. It has a little bit of an Alice In Chains vibe (off their SAP album).

I also hear some hand drums in the background here (bongo or tabla something like that).

In the chorus maybe a synth pad to fatten it up.

Sounds good as a stripped down acoustic song though. You could sing just about anything and it would sound good!

Very nice
song and lyrics .....and your voice and singing is really, really good, though personally, I'd like the guitar and vocal up just a notch. Maybe a flute accompaniment on such a sensitive number. I really like it though, regards M

Hi Nat
I think you are onto something really good here, very Natalie Merchant.
what it needs is a chorus, great verses, well you have a chorus but the chorus needs an entirely different progression and melody, it's too similar to the verses and it really needs to kick in, you have such a great voice it requires a great song, this could be a really great song! I'd change up the drum beat for the chorus, syncopate the vocal, and really put some raw energy emotion into the feel.

Thanks JD and Charles....Was looking for some good honest feedback.

well, you can get the good feedback from the song writers. but i will say, strings would be cool in here i think - cellos, or high woodwinds like a flute for example (or both). that would round this out, although there are so MANY great ways to do that. man, your voice is just incredible natalie!

With that voice and that great song, who needs synths? A few well played acoustic guitar tracks.................I smell a Grammy!

There's an indieish minimalism to this arragnement that I like, but would be lost if there was a string track.. although an electric guitar or pinano track could be good for filling out the sound. Either way, catchy tune!

really cool song
This sounds better than what you sent me the other day. I still think that keeping this sparse, just guitar and more harmonized NatalieVox would keep this intimate... you lowered the drums and it now sounds a lot better. I guess I could hear some light strings added here and there possibly, but even that might "mainstream" this a bit... I still vote for keeping this ethereal, but with a little extra harmony on the chorusy bits. Just me :-)

Yes
Awesome vocals! I actually like the straight drum throughout, mabee change to the ride during the chorus. I could stand hear a bit of conga far far in the back ground for a natural raw effect. I could hear a solo violin in the chorus way behind the vocals as well... may be worth a shot.. Awesome start.

wonderful tune
in my opinion it needs bass and some soloing here and there, maybe just fills.. your voice is warm and smooth, like it a lot.

the seeds are sown
I like this tune as is. But if you are going back to it, maybe some higher harmonies could be fun. I would also like to hear some organ tones. And Mark's point about bustin a change at 2:00 or so could add an element of interest.

You have a compelling voice, and the stripped down arrangement works fine. I would try to work on the verse chorus and chorus verse transitions to give each section more of an identity. When I work on my transitions I like to have song set based drum loops which have good fills. I think this song could also benefit from a bridge.

Great ideas, guys. Thanks so much. This is just what I was hoping for.

Voice
You just need the voice and guitar. Doesn't need to be a big production on this. Having said that, strings would be interesting.

Hope to hear a revised version soon.

Could be stripped down
Cool voice... I dig that almost whispering singing. Could work very well stripped down to the guitar. I would loose the drum-loop thing... Maybe a second instrument (piano?) giving it a touch of another dimension every now and then... The composition is very good. I like the chord progression and melody. Your singing is the topping on the cake. Very cool.

But it could of course be given a full band treatment and would've been cool that way to if treated nice...

It COULD be embellished, but it doesn't need it, in my humble O. It's a beauty as is. Please post your lyrics at the next iteration.

Beautiful vocals
This doesn't really need any change. I can hear several arrangements, but it is really hard to top what you have here.

The Ocean
Really moving eerie tune. I agree with the idea for a deep bass and maybe a echo-plexed electric guitar playing long plaintive note patterns. The acoustic need to have the hi-end boosted and the mids dropped IMHO. The vocals are gorgeous, whispery and intimate. The drums seem a little dry and need some opening up in the reverb. Really cool track.
