Description

Where to start?

I've been semi-absent for a couple of months following retirement from full-time employment, but I have been busy experimenting, mostly with melody, following many nudges from Paul F. Page. Herewith, one of my experiments.

This piece consists of 2 Exotic Beats loops, 1 Percussion Combo loop, 1 Cymbal loop, and a MIDI melody (by me), all repeated as necessary. I hope you like it but if you don't, I hope you'll let me know why. (BTW, if you have a suggestion for a more appropriate genre, let me know.)

Congratulations on everything
Hopefully retirement will give you lots of time to play, especially if it creates fun stuff like this. It definitely has a little bit of a middle-eastern vibe, and I like the melody handed back and forth like that (although kept wanting the tail end of the melody, after that last held note, to go up a half step then down two more half steps and hold... not sure why.)

The percussion loops are great, and this piece is short, so all is well, but if you wanted to make this a little longer, I'd vary the rhythm a little, maybe stop then restart the tambourine in spots to add some spice (I think a little cinnamon or cardamom is great). And of course, nothing says exotic like a double-reed, try an oboe in places? :-) Maybe you can get Vicdiesel to play the Oud for you too? This could be quite the belly-dancing music soon.

I've been looking forward to retirement for more than 50 years: since I was about 14, and now that it's here, I smile more, though I don't seem to have any more time to myself, somehow.
I will keep all your suggestions in mind if I rework this, but it wasn't meant as belly-dance music. Probably just suggestive of old men sitting around smoking a hookah, drinking strong coffee, THINKING of a belly-dancer ;-)

	Cool This has a kind of Enigma feel to the drums and instruments. I think the VicDiesel suggestion is a good one. This is a great start. I think it does need some sort of lead instrument to take a prominent role somewhere in the song. Cool tune! Check out my latest song called Devil's Argument!!!

Interesting piece Richard
It has a very relaxed flow to it with a somewhat exotic melody. Like the percussion work in it, but it sounds a little thin to me. I hear a bass instrument of some kind in my head for this, although I'm not sure what it needs to be. You could do a Bass line for Upright of electric bass, but you might also want to consider a tunable drum or possible a Tabla.

Like where you're headed on this one my friend. Keep at it.

I left a really nice ,food orientated comment based around noisy casbahs,open fires smoking and tagines giving off aromatic scents of infusions of rice ,cous cous ,fruits and savouries........a bit like this comment really and it DID NOT post......aaaaaaaaghhhhh.

So I have said it again whilst swaying gently to the magic of Nuit d'Algiers or Tagine Dream as I have subtitled it.Cheekily. 80)

Chris, I'll be honest with you, but don't tell anyone else: I named it after it was finished. Quite a bit after, in fact. Originally I called it something like Nights Beside or Along the Seine, but as I played it more I realized it would have to be in the Arab Quarter, and I didn't know if Paris has an Arab Quarter... so I moved it to Algiers. I always enjoy
sitting down and doing percussion-based songs, and clearly, so do you. This has a really nice feel to it - relaxed and exotic. Mix-wise, I'd probably like to hear the percussion more centred - I think you can get away with a bit of panning on percs, but the loop in the LH channel in particular seems to have a number of instruments in it, and panning them all left makes things a little unbalanced to me. You'll probably find that the loop is a stereo loop already with some instruments panned left and others right. Having both loops panned very minimally (say less than 5 right and left) would give this more cohesiveness perhaps.
Really smooth piece of work though.
VERY relaxed vibe.
Happy retirement - watch out, you'll soon be busier than ever!

You have some nice things put together here. I really enjoyed the feel and middle eastern flavor you bring with your blend of beats and melody. The only thing I may have yearned a little for, would be a contrasting section, as if turning a corner or passing by something else on the voyage you are taking us. I really enjoyed what you set up here.

I have also just retired and am gradually coming to terms with no work and less money! I also still find I have no time for me. How did I ever manage to work?

An interesting piece Richard. I recognise the loops and you've used them very effectively. As Eduard said some extra variation wouldn't go amiss but this is short enough not to get boring.
