Description
I usually try not to post more than one song in too short of a period, and I just posted two for the Halloween Spooktacular, but, this is kind of a "current events" song, so I went ahead any way.

There's an election here tomorrow (Tuesday) in the U.S. and vileness and vitriol are everywhere. There's a lot of divisive talk coming from both sides, but, as people have tried to point out, most of us are between the extremes. Thats true in politics, religion, social issues and Team Jacob and Team Edward. I think Jon Stewart hit exactly the right chord Saturday in his Rally for Sanity and/or Fear. Sadly, it seemed to be lost on many people and there has been a lot of snarking back and forth on both sides over the effort for moderation. And that's where this song came from.

This is a slap-dash effort. Just about 24 hours from start to finish. IIt would have been quicker, but I just couldn't do the vocals yesterday and barely got them done today, so I'm back to my one-take roots on this one. Lots of crunchy guitars making sonic mud, some wrong notes here and there and other blemishes, but, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it. It's been a long time since I got a song done so quickly from inspiration to completion.

It's a little long, almost seven minutes, but I hope you'll take the time to give it a listen.

Lyrics
Running Scared
©2010 Joseph Gurner

So many people shouting
I can’t hear your voice
Running through the wilderness
Trying to get home

Cashing in on anger
to sell the evening news
No one wants to talk today
or hear what they say

We hear about the anger
from the other side
But we don’t talk to them
to find out how they feel

Someone starts the yelling
from the back of the room
Too many voices, too many fears
overcome our minds

The people keep on fighting
while being told what’s right
Hating those with different lives
Different points of view

But we’re all just running scared
Being herded through our lives
Listening to the talking heads
Never stopping to catch our breath

We need to find our common ground
with our fellow man
Or the price we’ll pay is high

for running scared

running scared

See the angry faces
on the TV screen
Where’s the voice of reason
the fair and balanced man

He can’t be found in Washington
There’s too much power there
He can’t be found in the pulpit
Too much money at stake

The people keep on fighting
while being told what’s right
Hating those with different lives
Different points of view

But we’re all just running scared
Being herded through our lives
Listening to the talking heads
Never stopping to catch our breath

We need to find our common ground
with our fellow man
Or the price we’ll pay is high

for running scared

We are rockin' in the free world now! When I read the Neil Young comparisons Jack and James made I was dying for the vocal to come in. Yeah man, you nailed it. You even got a grungy solo in there like Neil would play. This was 7 joyful minutes. Great listen Joseph!

Nice hook - it hits home because it's true. Good arrangement & vocal - I agree with the others on the Neil Young comparison. A good song, but I think it could be more effective if you brought in the prechorus and chorus sooner.
