Description
Welcome to my dream come true! Now sit back, put on your shades, grab a cigarette and a scotch rocks, and listen to some jazz. We've got the incredible iGStudio on sax (and wait until those dulcet tones shiver down your spine) and the amazingly talented McBoy on piano (whose fleet fingers will shimmy right into your soul). That's right -- I finally got to sing with that jazz combo I've always dreamed about! And even more than that, I got to work with two of Macjams' biggest talents, and nicest guys. I was born under a lucky star, no doubt about it.

Lyrics
Smooth as silk, slick as oil
Sly as a fox, you're never true or loyal
You're a rake, a bounder, a rascal, a cad
Why, oh, why do I like my boys bad?

You set your sights in that smoky room
Helpless as a kitten, I sauntered your way
You smiled, you laughed, enjoying my doom
I couldn't resist that black hair touched with grey

:;Refrain::

You put on airs; lived like a king
I thought you were the man you pretended to be
The bills came in; I paid everything
A wink, a kiss, and a slap on the tush was your currency

:;Refrain::

You stole my heart, and all of my rings
You took my natural pearls but skipped the cultivated
I should have known I'd lose all my things
You wouldn't even breathe without being compensated

::Refrain::

::Some noodling around::

::Refrain::

I don't know...
Loverboy...
Come to Mama.

more laid back
Pretty cool that you were able to work with
musicians, eh? This is nice alternate version of the
song. More laid back, loungy and mellow. I think I
liked the addition of the sax the most. What I
missed, however, (and everyone can call me crazy if
they want to) is the skittery piano in the original
version...even though it was a touch fast, it added a
more feisty tone to the piece!! (Nothing against your
talent, McBoy!!!) Overall, this was a pleasure to
hear...

Yikes!
Three great talents that taste great together! Hats off to everyone. Joanna, I hope you're fishing around for a jazz combo to sing with. You've got the chops and the sensibilities for it. iGStudio, you make me like saxophone... and typically I don't. You have really terrific expression on that instrument and leave me hoping you'll lay down more sax tracks. McBoy, you prove once again to be the multitalented artist (pronounced ar-TEEST) with your smokey, melodic piano backing. Lovely piece and a testament to the power of collaborations!

Let the voice lead
Joanna, I loved the first version you put up, and I was
eager to hear live sax and piano supporting your
gorgeous voice. However, I'm sorry to say, I'm really
dissappointed.

I expected the sax and piano to add warmth and depth to
your background tracks. However, instead of supporting
you, the sax and piano seem to be competing with you for
air time. Especially the piano! From the beginning it
seems intrusive, slightly off key, and almost elbowing you
out of the way. I also think the solos are embarrassingly
and inappropriately long. This alone says volumes about
what when wrong in this collaboration.

Let the voice lead
Hm... I would be happy to take a piece of constructive criticism and even act
upon one, but could you please, be more specific?
"...I expected the sax and piano to add warmth and depth to your background
tracks..."
Although it sounds very poetic, it would be a lot easier to undrstand, if
you used more or less standard terminology. What exactly do you mean?
"...instead of supporting you, the sax and piano seem to be competing
with you for air time..."
Perception is the key. I don't see it that way, sorry.
"...the piano ... seems intrusive, slightly off key..."
See above. I think the piano is fine, and it definitely brings in a layer of
necessary complexity and depth to the composition, if compared with the
repetative loops of the original version.
"...the solos are embarrassingly and inappropriately long. This alone
says volumes about what when wrong in this collaboration..."
:) I think, I should start using the term "Embarrassingly Long", it has a
nice feel to it... Guilty as charged, however, just couldn't stop playing...

Let the voice lead
Actually, I listened to it again and my real problem is not with the sax, which
sounds great. It's the piano that doesn't work for me. Complexity if fine, but
it needs to be in service of the song and Joanna's voice.

Thank you, _nder! The vocals were the exact same tracks as the other
version, so the change in tempo is due entirely to iG's and McBoy's additions.

I feel like I'm sitting right in the middle of you all while
you're jamming on this track....a real sense of "aliveness"
and immediacy!

This is a wonderful assemblage of awesome talent. As far
as I'm concerned, the quality of content and production
makes this tune radio-ready.

I strongly suggest that you three collaborate on a jazz
album! I'd certainly pay for your CD (or facsimile thereof).

Thank you, Mystie! I spent most of my life thinking my voice was too odd for
public consumption. It's not like the pop singers I hear on the radio. But I
have found new faith here on Macjams. Apparently, low and smoky isn't the
handicap I'd always thought it to be!

I said it before...
I will have to agree with the others, particularly mgauding's reflection a few
posts back. I though that the instruments are much more "supportive" of the
vocals in the first version. I think that the instruments are a little too
dominating in the second version, which takes away from Joanna
who is clearly meant to be the star in this one. I am guessing that
the reason for this is simply geographic.

There is nothing quite like face to face personable live
performance recording, and for obvious reasons. I think that a lot
of emotion a feeling that are associated with a song's recording
are captured in recording better when the vocalists are able to
interact on a personal level with the instrumental musicians. The
way that the rhythm section comunicates through body language
in a Jazz Combo is a good example of how musicians rely upon
the ambiance of the moment to deliver those truly magical and
sparkling performances.

It is crucial I think, for the instrumentalist, to have a personal
interaction with the singers, in order to provide them with the
best comping style. I think that I will have to agree also with
Joanna that instruments can change everything. Quite important
the instruments became in the second recording, where I feel
they don't let Joanna shine like she did in the original.

Sincerely
Johnathan J. Stegeman

Dear Joanna,
I did not say that I was at all unhappy with this piece. Nor have I said that
about any of your music. I am sorry that you have read my comments in this
way. Surely, you must appreciate the value of criticism in that I am sure you
understand that it is a force that propels all of us to make our work even
better. I feel that all of my comments have been of the constructive sort and
are equally weighted with praise about your incredible talents as a musician
and a vocalist. I may have been picky, but I hope you do not feel offended,
and I assure you that I really do mean the best intentions in everything I have
mentioned in my posts.

Once again, I am not unhappy with any of your work, nor would I feel right
knowing that you felt this way.

Sincerely,
MidiMacMan

I have not listened to much of your music but will say
this...your voice is perfectly suited to this genre. It really
pulled me in and held me hostage until the end. The sax
and piano were excellent as well! Well done!

What a voice!
This is really really really good!

(Eh, the reverb on the voice is a bit exaggerated. If I were
you I'd let a professional do the mastering of this track.)

The combo is solid too, but your voice really makes it.

What a voice!
Thank you, T-Vic! I tried a lot of settings with the reverb (the instruments had
heavy reverb and I was trying to match them), and I was fresh out of
professional mixers at the time. I never could find the setting that sounded
exactly right, so I went with the one I thought was closest. Glad you liked the
singing, though!

Smooth...
What better word to describe it than one from the title?

Being a big Diana Krall fan, this track just hit home with me. I wanted to kick back in my office on a couch, crank up the volume, and take a long slow drag on a cig (and I don't smoke). That's just how relaxed I was feeling listening to this.

More. Please.

Wowser!
Very very smooth indeed! Joanna, you did a wonderful job
on the perfectly over-the-top lyrics, great jazz music bed,
and oh-so-perfect singing for this genre! Then, you
brought in a couple of impressive musicians to play with
you... Mcboy does a superb job on piano (my father-in-
law is a pro jazz piano player, this sounds just like his
style of playing.) IGStudio does an awesome job on sax. I
disagree with somebody else's earlier comment on
competing with you, actually it seemed that you were all
sharing the song space very nicely... which must have
been tricky, given that you'd already recorded the vocals.
The real piano/sax addition gives more live-lounge
ambience to this piece, bravo to you 3! And a virtual rose
to the diva!
