Description
Well I certainly didn’t break any speed records getting this song done (nothing new there)! From first sitting down to compose the piano piece to putting the final touches on the orchestration was a 2 month endeavor. I started working on it after returning home from the last motorcycle trip of the summer, just after Labor Day. It therefore took on a transitional meaning to me, as I reluctantly let go of a wonderful summer riding season and began to embrace the emerging autumn.

I am really appreciating the Miroslav orchestral instruments although there are still situations where I prefer the sound of some in the JP symphony orchestra library. In several spots here, I used a combination. The piano part was played using the Ivory German Concert D piano instrument, which I just love and seem to default back to each time, after trying several of the other Ivory options. And I’m ready to admit that I’m also appreciating quite a few of the Logic functions which really do make it easier to see and manipulate notes from multiple instrument tracks all in the same view. I think that alone has made the upgrade from GB worth it. However I realize I’m probably only using 1% of what Logic can do, and only understand about 25% of that 1% (on a good day), so I know I have a long way to go. Mixing this song has been a real challenge, especially with a bad case of OCTD (Obsessive Compulsive Tweak Disorder), but also a whole lot of fun.

Thanks as always to Shay (kassia) who critiqued this song for me many times in great detail while it was taking shape. I value your feedback very much and I know you helped me find my perspective the multitude of times I was certain that it was hopelessly lost. Special thanks to Andrew (alackbass) and Mark (MarkHolbrook) for the listens and great ideas for tweaks that made a real difference in the finished product. And finally a big thank you to Bryn (particledots), who ran my final version through his Waves L3-LL Multimaximizer program (because I'm still resisting yet another software learning curve), giving it a nicely mastered sheen.

the final
on this is outstanding and the movement to contemplative to majestic is brilliant. You are such a careful and dedicated composer and it so shows. I do not understand how you accomplish what you do but never stop. Bryn is to be commended for his assistance as well. Bravo and Kudos by very cool friend. Downloaded.

Lovely work Karen
Beautifully put together (as usual). Lots of movement and nicely judged instrumentation.

I liked the use of percussion. Just enough to give interest and texture but not enough to distract.

Cheers

Wowza, as a friend of mine says
Wowza, wowza, wowza. Karen, words fail me. A stunning piece of work that seems to flow effortlessly from opening chord to last echoing note, through all sorts of ups and downs and emotional pushing and pulling. I'm only on my second listen but I haven't heard ANYthing I would change. The piano, strings, reeds, percussion, everything fits together so well; the dynamic changes all seem to come where they should and everything just seems natural.
Congratulations on a magnificent orchestral work. And thanks, I took a copy too ;-)

Break into song
After the pause that follows your piano intro, I was poised to break into song, but luckily for all concerned I didn't. But there is something profoundly song-like about this; it's beautiful! As with other works of yours that I have heard, it also seems very cinematic; I could imagine this being the soundtrack of a scene very much like you describe, traveling along a highway on the open road.

Great work here, Karen1

Well it isn't so much about quantity as it is about quality - and this is just loaded up with quality, Karen - this is just wonderful. Perfect for the season - it is a celebration of the time. Your compositions are always so full of life and joy - this one sounds happy and full of living. I really like the piano you use - I love the nuance of the hammer hitting the string. The arrangement is excellent, and the piece moves and flows with passion.

You did good! I can totally relate to the OCTD syndrome. Why, I had to re-write this comment 16 times!

Congratualtions on a piece very well done - thanks!

Always a Wonderful Treat
to hear your latest piece of inspiring music, Karen. This *almost* makes the changing season palatable (we've been frosted the past couple of nights here).

A lovely piece this is and dare I say, a bit more toward the popular music mainstream vein than your usual. Don't ask me why... I'm not in a very analytical mood this a.m. But my ears made me say it. LOL!

Airy, lilting and delightful. ;)

Holy Schmoley...
Hey ...I just got blasted by brass ....and I liked it...(my fault for having rearranged my back room and putting my monitors at ear level)

I see that you are still getting some use out of those Mirror Slaves and I am glad to hear that they have such great longevity. This is a real builder isn't it...I do not mean that it is like a pile of bricks ...no (for heavens sake) ...it starts quietly and then gets
progressively more....well ,more really...
Its a bit like a ride out....you start off all regular and,you know courteous and three hours later your getting your knee down back wheel sliding, counter steering and giving Valentino
Rossi a run for his money.....

Great Job........Chris

a soundtrack to
a season? How cool is that? Well I hear so much here it's hard to describe, I swear it reminds me of Cheers a bit, (by that I mean it's a classic melody), If Yanni wasn't so over the top, this is how he might sound, (by that I mean it's extremely tastefully done), it's current with the class of clasical, a hint of jazz, and maybe even a tiny bit of blues, and I also agree with the other comments that it's very cinematic, it evokes great imagery, I really like your other stuff but this breaks new ground for you I think Karen,I mean stylistically(if that's a word), and your playing technique is noticeably different, not better or worse but refreshingly different, showing your diversity as a player and composer, I love all of the symphonic additions and how masterfully you textured them in, great mix and production, kudos to Bryn on the finishing touches and it sounds like you have a great team of advisors too!

Speed Kills!
It is only when we slow down and savor things that they become worthwhile... anyway, here I am, smelling the crisp Autumn air and having you unfold huge expanses of gold and blue around me.

After listening a couple times, my two very minor negative thoughts were for more languid strings under the piano, not quite so choppy, as they sometimes distracted from the piano melody, and at 3:12 when the heavier rock drums come in, it didn't quite fit at first, but it did grow on me.

But that is like 1% of my thinking, the other 99% is really loving this... gorgeous, expansive, it does have a lot of characteristic Karenosity, but some new twists and turns too... god I love the little minor english horn twist at 3:00, the hills and valleys are a great ride... this sounds a little like something Neil Diamond or Alan Parsons would write in places... What an incredibly detailed and polished and ENJOYABLE Magna-opus. Definitely downloaded to my Karen-on-repeat iPod library! Thank you for sharing your compositions with us... ahhhh.

And, um, I haven't seen you at the KSA meetings lately, are there better snacks at the OCTD meetings then? :-)

Brilliant
I love how you always play the timing with feeling, rather than rigidly. You have that in common with my favourite classical composer, Chopin. You really know how to work the pulse for ascending and descending feeling, as well as the triggering of more complex impressions. That, combined with the greater sense of progression so masterfully given in your arrangement and composition, is what transforms a collection of notes into a listener's journey, and puts you a cut above other composers.

This piece is an incredible work of art. Another listener commented that this sounds like a bit of a departure for you, and I'd have to say it's more of an evolution and maturation of your talents. I am especially blown away by your use of both solo and ensemble strings in this piece, and by the amazing job you did in mixing everything. It is always my very great pleasure to be a fly on the wall throughout your composing process. Congrats on another gorgeous piece of music my friend.

fly on the wall???
i think flies on the wall just observe - whereas YOU were in there giving me feedback every step of the way! ("i can't hear the BASSOON; this needs to be BIGGER; whoa .... TO much here" etc.....lol) Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sticking with me in my often messy music making process and keeping me pointed in the right direction. especially when i lose my perspective .... which i think was about once a day on this, wouldn't you agree? :)

Goes to show you can't rush greatness. This is superb Karen. I don't need to tell you how good it is, but I do need to tell you how much I enjoyed it. So many nice bits in the piece overall and it has a grandiose nature without being crass. So chilled out. Instant download of course. So we gotta wait another two months for more? Very nice Karen
a much more subtle melody on this one. That pause at :28 is my favorite part of the song. A great example of using silence in music powerfully. Your style of "dancing notes" is evident in this piece, but you have managed to layer strings and woodwinds very nicely into this piece.

I think the part Eduard was talking about is the strings from 2:22-2:41. I actually think the opposite is the issue though. The strings have a slow attack which makes them almost sound like they are behind the beat. The piano is sharp and on point and when the strings get faster, they delay in attack makes them sound late.
At 2:42, the breakdown to the piano is very nice. I really liked the drum addition. I think it is unexpected and adds a modern flair to the piece. Love that crescendo at 4:03. Maybe tweak the horns a bit. Not sure there is much you can do about midi horns though. They are pretty much impossible to get perfect. Bevan has about the best set I know of. If you want I can have him render the midi with his set up (EastWest I think they are). PM me if you are interested. I know you are generally done when you post a song but I figured I would offer.

Great song Karen. Maybe your most impressive composition yet. Will await the next one!

Number 1
With all due respect to your mates in the orchestral and sub-orchestral genres, I believe you are the preeminent symphonic composer around these parts. In my eye, your works stand up when compared with any piano-driven symphony out there. There are just so many great moments: turns, resolutions, dynamic changes, swells and so on. I'll always liken your tunes to a motorcycle ride through the mountains - it always seem there's an unexpected revelation around the bend.

I'd love to know which parts here are Miroslav and which are JP. I wish that the articulations allowed you to be just slightly more expressive. As an example, 0:31-1:34, I feel the string parts would be better served having non-vibrato sections mixed in with the vibrato ones. Rare is it that a string player goes full bore with vibrato the whole time. That is, most notes have at least one ... uh ... "non-vibrato" moment just as they are bowed which drifts into vibrato.

Like Eduard, I'll admit the contemporary drum sounds didn't work for me (3:12 forward). Maybe they will grow on me with continued listens. Maybe I'm too much of a purist? It might be that it pushes the song a bit too far into the realm of "Broadway / show tune". Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course.

I love the interval run you used to close out the piece, as well as the fact that you stayed on the minor side there.

Also glad to see you moving forward with Logic. It's definitely crazy complex, but I think it's built so that you can use the basics and add on as your experience grows. You've overcome the hardest part: getting started.

Bravo on another wonderful addition to your collection of works. How lucky are we here at Macjams to be able to listen in to these gems? I have the answer right here: QUITE!

Never
Karen, you never seem to half-ass anything you do. I just sat back and listened and said to myself, damn...she's a natural.

Your composition sounds so organic.
The ideas flow so smoothly from one to the next, and when a surprise does come, it's similar to when the sun jumps out from behind a cloud, to bathe us with it's light.

What I like the most about your works, are how they make you feel when listening. If Pfizer could turn you into a pill, they would corner the market on anti-depressants.

On my 3rd listen
and I'm very moved. In addition to your obvious gifts as a composer and a musician, you are a midi wizard!
The MoM in me almost asked you -facetiously- to 'stop pounding', but then I realized that of all the things I value most in your music (thoughtful composition, graceful pacing and a broad emotional perspective), the one I most enjoy is the power you bring to your playing. The robust joy you bring to the piano is what allows you to indulge your most romantic tendencies while avoiding treacherous sentimental swamps. Your music FLOWS bright and free.

Much Love to you Karen,

MoM

The fluid technique and call and response with the strings are just superb. So someday I want to know how these pieces present themselves to you. Evolution
It has been interesting to hear how your music has evolved over the time that you have been on MacJams.

Your chord progressions, pacing, mixing and musical ideas have grown and developed over the years.

My favorite aspects of this particular piece are:
1) Beginning w/solo piano. You introduce the theme in a gentle, simple way.
2) Use of percussion and woodwinds. Brilliant!
3) Your chord progressions have good expressiveness and development.

A less favorite aspect was the rather choppy, highly synthesized sounds of the strings. I kept thinking how much your good writing for piano and strings would lend itself so very well to a written-out composition for small ensemble, played by real musicians. Or, a larger orchestral version; your concept of writing for multiple instruments is constantly evolving, and each submission sounds more sophisticated than the last. It would sound wonderful with live musicians, and could be showcased in even more effective fashion than you do here.

Having said that, it is obvious that you worked very hard on this piece and your "musical labor of love" shows strongly in this recording.

Your pianistic skills are so good, Karen. I've always enjoyed listening to your playing. I encourage you to publish your music; I really think that you could be a very successful composer. Your music is very accessible and many, many people outside of MacJams would enjoy it.

All best wishes,
Cameron

Hi Cam
first of all, it was so fun to see you in chat the other night! it's interesting to hear your description of the strings as choppy - i was so thrilled with how they were sounding, and it's such a huge leap better than the JP strings, i still can't get over it. they are obviously not the real thing, but i'm quite pleased with how the DO sound, relatively speaking. of course it would be awesome to have this played by real musicians - just a bit hard to pull off. so, i work with the resources i have available. i have never really thought about publishing my music - in fact i'm not even sure what you mean by that - LOL - maybe you just mean make a CD that can be purchased, or maybe you're saying something about actual notation. I've just never been too motivated by having a big audience or trying to make money at this (and i doubt i'd be too successful even if i was). I just like playing around with these orchestrations as piano pieces come to me and sharing them with my family and friends. but i sure appreciate your words and your support cameron - thanks!

Hi Karen!
Thanks for your reply -- it's always good to hear from you.

As far as the string sound is concerned, I guess it's all relative, isn't it? It's good that you like the Miroslav string sound over the JP ones, which makes it more rewarding to write for strings. Your writing for them is very good.

In my previous comment, I *did* actually encourage you to notate your music and publish it to sell, for acoustic musicians to perform. Although it's always a challenge to do this kind of thing (and you may not want to hassle with it which is understandable) -- I feel that your compositional skills could indeed be taken to the next level, sharing your music with the world in an expanded way.

Just a thought. Meanwhile, I look forward to hearing your next submission! Great work Karen.

Sorry for delay
Should have gotten onto this wonderful piece much sooner. Feel like i'm at the back of a long queue of impressed and grateful people waiting to compliment you on this composition!

Everything sounds great to me, and the very idea of suggesting 'improvements' is perfectly laughable from someone who wouldn't know where to start on this sort of project, anyway!

From a more general point of view, the only slight difficultly i had with it was trying to visualise an autumnal equivalent to the rather 'triumphant' passages in the piece, although the colours of the fall do have a majestic quality of course and who wants to be too sad about the decay in the forest and the darkening sky anyway?

Wonderful work.

There is NO WAY...
...that I'm going back through these comments to make sure that I don't say something that three other people said....

Gee, Karen, a hundred fans on this one...Pretty neat....

As for me, I love it. I'm sitting here on second listen on a nicely cold, blustery and rainy New England November day, and this piece suits it. The odd thing is, that I think if it was sunny and still and the birds were singing, this piece would also have its place in the day....

You continue to have a melodic sense that is both accessible and sophisiticated. The opening with simple and very full sounding piano, joined eventually by simple string lines, is well wrought... The build up is slow, featuring that rarest of beasts, tasteful tympani...

I actually like that bit where the more conventional drum kit comes in.

You have a nice sense of dynamics throughout...

So, a really good one, I think....

magnatone said 2535 days ago (November 8th, 2010)
Hi Ed
oh, i'm so glad you came by for a listen - i was hoping you would! i'll put you down as a "yes" on the contentious drum lead-in. i liked it myself, but i see how it stands out in a way that might make it feel like a bad fit to the rest of the song. that's you and me on one side of the column and um .... i think .... everybody else on the other :)

This is beautiful Karen. There are many layers in this. The orchestration is dynamic and colorful. The piano is sweet. Oh, and that delicate ending: that's halloweenish! :-)
I love the idea of the drum part, although I was expecting a heavier (of course ;-) pattern and drum sound. I find drums to be a completely different kind of beast compared to tonal instruments. Taming them is hard but fascinating.

Is lovely, Karen. I could have stood about another minute of it!
Your use of percussion is something I can learn a lot from, but know if I could ever pull it off. It's really quite wonderful. Karen, you have such a natural sense for orchestration and it is such a pleasant experience to hear how you gently introduce each of the woodwinds into the tapestry of your arrangement...I agree with the Ivory German piano which is also my piano du jour. There is not a better digital piano on the market. and you play it with such certainty. what a wonderfully cinematic composition you've written here. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.
Peace.

beautiful
i'm late but I'm loving this. sounds wonderful. some great chord changes here. don't know why but I always think of Elton John when I hear you play, there's something about the way you put the beautiful chord intervals and you're attack when you play is kind of more classic rock/pop. like at 2:50. this is great Karen, you always played great, but now your recording skills are really blossoming.

talk to Bryn about mixing; he taught me a lot bout mixing projects with tons of parts. all about putting your parts into groups. you make your groups sound good, and then in the end you just have to mix a few groups to get the final mix. really is a much easier way to go.

anyways this is fabulous.

From the first few bars... it just pours of classic beauty. The combination of the strings and piano - made to work together as good friends. The oboe comes as a messenger of good news, reinforced by the drums and every piece of sound-making gizmo that joins in.

The last piano movement settles it all.

You're just brilliant. Pure talent!

truly organic
i love the song's development - you're so gifted at conveying Beginnings, Transitions, and Closure.
It starts out slowly, thoughtfully, and grows like a living thing.
1:56 to 2:02 - OH YUM!
horns at 2:09 were simply beautiful and the percussion at 2:26 was a neat texture.
2:46 - the low cello stroke added so much.
2:54 - those twinned oboes (?) made my heart ache.
the way the percussion changes at 3:12 along with build in strings and glorious piano - ooooooo!!!!
3:37 opens up to a lighter mood, and DAMN - it's a fine change.
4:13 lets the horses run full tilt down the home stretch - and MAN those pounding sound hooves move my soul. the closing ascension was perfect. Karen - in your own words: SIGH!

Ms. Karen...
... you have a way with writing that always capture my attention. There's an incomparable smoothness to your key changes. And then, there's your climaxes...

... you always have a way of composing where you introduce us to the main theme in the first minute, build up the piece with more instruments and a bit of variation then gradually climax it. Then, you slowly strip it off other instruments, go back to the main theme, and end with it as a solo.

Gosh... you're mind-blowing. You're an incredible talent! Beautiful work here. :)

Wow!
I don't know how you do what you do but I'm glad you continue to do it. If Mozart and Beethoven could play with this technology, they could have heard their work before the the orchestra tuned up.
The main theme has the soothing effect of something familiar like a glimpse of a place or a scent or a sound that we remember. This music that is in you...it speaks to all of us, exquisitely and it makes us glad. Thank you.

Evocative
This is a very evocative instrumental that spoke to me on many levels. It was able to conjure up thoughts of wide open spaces and majestic peaks one minute and a leaf floating down a gentle stream at another. I love the ending.

Girl, you sure know how to write poetry with your music! Seriously!! Absolutely bee-u-tee-ful. Love when that 3 minute mark hits.

Better and Better
This may be the best piece I've heard of yours. Good instrumentation and your playing, as always, is spot on.

I'd say that your use of Logic and the instrument programs is going quite well. Great ending phrase.

fall rising
i think i said a while back that you should be writing for movies. there are little hints of this that remind me of michael nyman...and i hope that hits you as a compliment as he's not everyone's fave cup of darjheeling. the orchestral build is so well chosen in terms of sound and dynamic. that little run up at the end is excellent too.

imaginative piece. Great build and mixing is certainly good enough to show off all the instruments so no complaints there. Another beautiful work.

Karen, Karen,Karen!
(Karen, Karen, Karen . . . .) WOW! the quality is just dripping off this one. You are right to love that piano sound. It is one of the most authentic I have heard. This piece really starts to sail at the 3:15 mark when the percussion comes in and then the full orchestral swell. I could almost feel myself in the mountains of New Hampshire in the Autumn. I will have to send you a PM on viewing the piano rolls at the same time in Logic. I would love to do that. I feel as you do. I know so little of Logic, and then someone tells me they do something and I am like "Wow, you can do that?"
This piece is just magnificent and your talent brings such joy. I am so glad you paid the price when you were young to put in the practice time. It gives your compositional talent free range. Sorry I'm so late. I haven't been around lately.
