This makes the 7th Bud / awigze collab. After the first one or two songs that you work with another musician on, a trust develops so that ya dont feel compelled to send annoying 'tweak this, add that' emails. Was thinking of Bud in this respect and wanted to get to back to the Bud zone. I emailed him and said something to that effect and this crazy, frenetic file dropped out of the heavens... I was like, oh ya!!! My friend Cliff who I often play in a praise band with and are forming a sax quartet next year let me borrow his soprano. I had never even played one and immediately fell in love with it. The alto was sitting out from another session with Carrie and Gaylen and well the Tenor... I've said enough.
Bud's work here is exquisite and I am proud to have it posted here on my site.
Bud sez:
One day I decided to play around with the Tal Noisemaker synth I found in Michael2's freebie finds. For some reason I was compelled to work at 177bpm and head in an Amon Tobin - Aphex Twin direction. That's what inspired the frenetic percussion with some midi drum parts assigned to synth voices etc. Once the whacky speed section was done I added a swampy drum track as a breakdown with lots of distortion and some Spectral filtering.
Then came the secret ingredient. Particledots had left a mostly vocal song in the Apod drop box called Voicer so I laid it in and tweaked it ever so slightly for a strange fit - but indeed it seemed to work. That's as far as I got when Andy emailed me requesting a "Bud Fix" as he put it. At first I said I didn't have anything - then I thought - why not? - let him wail on this weird thing. He took the track with the freedom to do as he wished and cut and pasted it into an extended backing layering three tracks of his amazing horn over it.
Then it was back to me for bass, guitar, and piano. This was a real challenge because I am not a jazz player - nor an educated player - so I had to rely on my intuition. I thought of it as dancing and basically tried to do no harm. There are many accidents that make me happy and some conscious decisions that aren't so bad either. As always - working with Andy was a thrill and an honor.
