Description
David Jorden is a 5th grade teacher at our school. He came to me early this year with a song idea for the school’s character education program. We spent two afternoons together in my classroom writing the lyrics and melodies. As we wrote each line I recorded his vocals right then and there. David came to the first session with the bridge already written.
I then sent the track out to Rich, Andy, and Mike. As usual all three came back with stellar performances taking the song to a new level.
Then on November 18th I recorded the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students singing the song’s chorus. Our school's music teacher, Kathryn McKamey, helped prepare the students for the recording. The classes came to the music room in groups of 40 to 50. I projected the GarageBand file on a screen so they could see how the recording was made. Both the students and their teachers were amazed to learn musicians across the globe could collaborate on music via the Internet.
Bryn and Bob placed the final touches on this with a wonderful mastering job and charming artwork respectively.
I’d like to thank Karen (magnatone) and Dani (RAVENS) for lending their expert ears during this project. And thank you Ryan for helping me with the bass line.

Lyrics
What Kind of Person Do I Want to Be
Words & Music by David Jorden & Andrew Lack
Chorus
What kind of person do I want to be?
What kind of life do I want to lead?
It’s my responsibility,
To be the best me that I can be
To be the best me that I can be
Verse 1
I will be honest and always tell the truth
For me generosity will be the golden rule
I will be loyal and be right by your side
When you’re down or you’ve been hurt,
Just watch my compassion rise
Chorus
What kind of person do I want to be?
What kind of life do I want to lead?
It’s my responsibility,
To be the best me that I can be
To be the best me that I can be
Verse 2
I will be humble and never brag or boast
For me integrity will always matter most
I will show kindness in every word and deed
When you feel alone and need someone,
My friendship will fill the need
Chorus
What kind of person do I want to be?
What kind of life do I want to lead?
It’s my responsibility
To be the best me that I can be
To be the best me that I can be
Bridge
A world full of possibilities
And I keep wondering what they all want from me
Scream the message every boy and girl
If you got character you can change the world
Verse 3
I will show courage,
And always do what’s right
Sometimes the courageous one,
Chooses not to fight.
I’ll be responsible,
And always follow through
Make no excuses
I’ll do what I have to do
Chorus
What kind of person do I want to be?
What kind of life do I want to lead?
It’s my responsibility,
To be the best me that I can be
