Description:
Going back through old albums looking for inspiration I pulled out the three record set by Frank Zappa called Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar. This song is derived from pieces from that album that I did as a learning experience. Everyone knows the commercial work he did and that he was a demanding and talented musician. But he also like to just lay it out, mistakes and all and that's where I come in. I've got the mistakes down and now that we will be able to reload new versions of our songs I figured it was a good excuse to put this up. It's long 5:04.

Hardware:
Fender Strat, J-Station, Blue Tube Preamp, Ibenez Tube Sreamer.

Software:
Logic Express 7

Character to spare! &mdash 01/18/05 - 06:50:30 PM
You're brave to go to Zappa for inspiration! Really great playing and tone throughout this piece. If there are mistakes, I don't hear them. It all sounds very organic and expressive. The bends and vibrato are seductive!

Given the length, you might try a change-up of the backing part at some point. Maybe a shift to a different mode or chord progression?

Ahhh, but changing the backing wouldn't be very Zappa-esque. :)
Frank had a tendency to solo 5-20 minutes while the band vamped on one or
two chords. Not that I would complain, I have been a fan for years.

More Low Notes, Please &mdash 01/19/05 - 05:16:48 AM
I enjoyed this. A nice tribute to Frank's mellower side,
Black/Pink Napkins. You're a very good guitarist.

Troy's recent trips into
absurd lyric territory have a zappa-like flavor.

Once we can upload remakes, I'll redo and upload my FZ
tribute / mistake Gonzo.

We have a winner. Yes, it was based on Pink Napkins. The middle section was my own chord progression but you're right the original was basically a two chord vamp. Mungo I'll check out your music later.

love the tone you have on this song. Very smooth you
inspired me so much I had to brake out the guitar and
play along or at least try to lol. And thanks for turning me
on to the Deja Vibe man I've got to get one I've been
trying to figure out how to get that sound for years.
Do you know what the difference is between the mini Deja
and the regular one?

you make that axe cry and scream. Extremely soulful
guitar playing. Incredible!

I like the experiment. Sorry to correct you on this, but those
where NOT mistakes. It was human flesh. Exactly what's
missing here. It doesn't burn enough!

The things I missed... &mdash 05/30/07 - 08:50:49 PM
...before I joined...

As a guy who keeps all versions of "Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar" in his office, including the limited edition mini-disc that came in a magazine... well... THIS is a TREAT....
