Pilchuck

Description
With a quarter mile to hike until we reach the peak of Mt. Pilchuck, everything begins to change. Snow covers the east side of the peak even though it's late July. The trees become sparse, giving way to jagged rocks reaching up to the heavens. Eagles ride the air thermals vertically to the tip of the peak, only to plunge hundreds of feet back down with a grace that renders human agilities insignificant. A small rock tumbles down the sheer side of the peak, echoing a warning to all who wish to continue upward. This is a place to be respected.

Finally we reach the top, and as we carefully lean over one of the giant boulders, a wave of dizziness washes across our bodies as we peer straight down the side of the mountain. We stand up, take a deep breath, and notice that eagles are gliding within 20 feet of us at eye level. It is surreal to be so close. For us, we are on the ground. For them, 20 feet away, they are a mile off the ground. It kind of makes one think, doesn't it?

After paying our respects to the eagles, we eat lunch and stare silently out at the horizon. The wind beckons us to take flight with it--to travel from peak to peak--but alas, we are mere mortals bound by karma and our physical bodies. For now, we are content to stand on the earth and admire our surroundings...for now.

Pilchuck
Mt. Pilchuck? - we must be neighbors - i'm in seattle (sorry if we've discussed this already and i'm forgetting!) ok, onto the song - this is a REALLY cool idea you've got going in here. the anchoring repeated high broken chord is really effective - and has a feel of slight danger, perfect for your setting. then the musical story telling grows - i love that thingee (lol) - the chord bending, and various other sounds you have coming in and out - it's really very creative what you've done here and i enjoyed every second of it - thanks!

Hi Neighbor!
Yes, we are neighbors. I worked in Seattle for a few years, but now I live on a farm in Snohomish County. It was such a nice day today, wasn't it? Were the Olympics out?
Thanks for the kind comments. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Lovely
soundscape. I have no idea where Mt. Pilchuck is, but it sounds [from your music] like a place to visit.

Very cool.

mesmerizing!
I live in a country without mountains, so whenever I´m in the mountains I like to climb. I like the perspective from a high point of view. Your music reflects that feeling.
Dig it!

Mountain soundscape
I really like the sounds - the constant synth in the RH speaker is mesmerising - also love the slippery lead synth/s and the chirpy things inhabiting the LH side. This reminds me a lot of Yes' Tales From Topographic Oceans for some reason. Absolutely beautiful - just love the little echoes and short pads around 4:45. If you could put this in a bottle (or a plastic bag) you could make a fortune :)
I really enjoyed this a lot!

Love the repetitive hypnosis-inducing backdrop. All the extra touches are very well done. Nice description too.

Spectacular
Great sounds here. I love the lonely eagle cries (?) of that lead in parallel fourths. A wonderfully floating mood you are projecting here.

Thank you for your comments. I hope the eagle wasn't too gratuitous, but I'm glad you caught it.

Intriguing
Wow, just got lost in this. There's something about being "Higher than the world"(Van Morrison)that is so life giving. Going to put this on Mp3 and take it with me next time I'm in a high place, ( which might be just the city multi story in Nottingham but hey!!

Definitely hypnotic
and quite unsettling in a way. Loving the little stereo bits and pieces happening, almost like tiny voices in my ear. I reckon this would make a great cinema soundtrack. Moving.
Cheers

For the Interested
Glad you enjoyed it. Here was my basic process.

The backdrop began as a Buddha Box loop, which I sped up. Then I doubled it and panned it left/right. Next, I ran a low-pass on the left side, as well as a wah effect, to emphasize the low end. On the right side, I ran a high pass filter, another oscillating filter, and a .4 second delay. then I pitch shifted it up, tweaking the frequencies to produce that heavy harmonic overtone you hear.

The main melody voice began as a stock GB plugin, which I then ran through a filter, added chorus, and compressed it heavily. I also gave the sound a wide glide, a large cutoff, and a very slow attack. Then I doubled the track and pitch shifted it up.

As for effects, I used a combination of delays and reverbs to create the vibe of things moving away from the listener, as a way of describing how large Pilchuck is. The delays were bounced to separate tracks, the frequencies were oscillated, and the reverb intensity was increased at each signal pass.

The remaining sounds were just little bits of nothingness.

Cheers
