I have been listening to a lot of Little Feat lately - just introduced our other guitarist to the joys of Lowell George and co - so it's terrific if that shows up for you. One of the incredible things doing a collab with John is the amazingly short turnaround between sending the tracks and getting something (excellent) back. As I tend to like to do things fairly quickly, this works so well for me. The fact that he seems to know exactly what I'm thinking of is an added advantage.

Hi Terry - thanks for the very kind words. I've been really enjoying playing more guitar lately, and am finding my way into the funk genres. I just love the tight rhythms and aggressive instruments, and John is very good in both those areas, so it works well for us.
I have another, rockier track ready to post in a week or two, and am getting lots of ideas for similar styled tunes. I just love making this stuff!

is to die for. I dig the contemptuous lilt you've got going on in your vocals -- it fits the lyrics nicely. I think this is one of the strongest pieces I have heard on MacJams. Great work!

Wanna be my PR guy? :) Thanks for your positive comments! I found a little bit of extra vocal confidence while using the Nektar plugin (sadly now in demo mode). All the guitar tones are thanks to Logic Studio presets (with a little tweaking).

Digging this cool bass sound and you probably know that you've got me hooked with this kind of groove.

Perfect drum choices to support you. Tasty hook-lines coming from the KTB department. I notice my jaw is hanging rather close to the floor after discovering the ultra cool clav playing. That is not for everyone to do in such a cool manner. Hats off to you John.

I was really pleased with how this came out - there are still a few little glitches, but close enough for "alt funk/blues" :) The little breakout bits worked really nicely - they replaced something completely different and much more cheesy - glad I worked that out!

"Steely Dan meets Little Feat" - if I had any control over what I do, that would be where I'd want my songs to go! Made my day.
There are a few little things with the drums that I've noticed could be made better - I normally ask Mike Watkins for a check of my drum track to see whether a "real drummer" could play it, but this time I didn't get around to it. Glad you commented on the drums though- I've found a couple of new tricks that I can use recently to make it sound more real.

Thanks Ted - the clav sound is from the instruments that come with Logic Studio, but of course it means nothing without someone to play it. John seems to excel at clav style playing. Interestingly, on my "Cat Faced Girl", his clav track was originally a piano track, but worked perfectly as a clav - it's a certain rhythmic style that makes it work.

The bass did come up OK, despite tripping all over myself the first few times through! I'm not sure about the chords (must ask John!) - it's all riffing without really thinking about what the chords were. I do that a lot. John does good stuff with the black and whites for sure.

Tell ya, Neil...
...to my ears, you're one of the MacJams performer/songwriters who has most tidily mastered the capabilities for punch of Ozone... Things sound up front and locked in without the effect being annoying or too much...

I love the jiguma Telecaster style, especially its current funkier manifestations. John's clavinet is the perfect foil, with the bits of B3 just enough to be a cool new flavor...

I have no idea what the lyrics are about, but they sound cool, and they're cohesive. I may flunk the quiz, but I'll be dancing...

It's all about presets Ed
with Ozone, I have a couple of presets and just fine tune for each song. I've been using Ozone for quite a while now, and have finally been able to get past the "look at how loud I can get this track" phase to just aiming for a solid tight sound. I've rediscovered the fun side of making music a bit lately, and think I have located my missing mojo, which has been AWOL for quite a while.

P'raps, with Little Feat thrown in...but- there's a Stevie Wonder kinda chord progression happening here (clearly the clav & B3 twists my mind in this direction)

I REALLY hope hope you're right about Julia, Neil, let's see what happens this coming year- she'll have her hands very full- is my reckoning, and, unfortunately, the 'spinning' persists no matter who's in charge. I'm just so disappointed that the 'changes' didn't happen in policy, only in personnel change.

What grabs me the most...
...is that cool groove you have going in the drums and bass that just cooks and cooks all the way through this funky, tune...Wow. At 2:35 or so there is some great stuff going on that adds just a few moments of special spice to the whole. By the time I'm finished listening to this track, you definitely have ME spinning. This is just a superb track all the way around and I am glad I've heard it!

Great sadness
I am listening, filled with great sadness. I mean, I'm nodding my head, tapping my toes, jamming away ... but I'm bummed. I am suddenly face-to-face with the realization that my career of providing drums for the great Neil Porter - an experience that stretches back almost 5 years to Mar 15, 2006 - is officially over.

I'd yammer on about the song itself, but the fact that I think Neil writes nothing but hits is well-documented (see any comment I've ever made on one of his tunes). Having John contribute keys to a song is the surest-fire way to elevate a song to "legendary" status. It sure seems this groove (most notably @ the funky clav part in the second verse, around 1:36+) is the most "in his wheelhouse" I've ever heard.

But my demise is spelled out in the drum groove. The fact that Neil gets this with the pencil tool instead of swinging sticks is just beyond me. If I could program tracks like this using the pencil, I'd sell my v-drums immediately. Just a great groove and use of available tools. While a certain fill was used in quite a few places, but even so it was well-disguised and cut up so it sounded different every time. My only possible nit (and I had to look hard) is that the stereo pan image of the kit is opposite what I'd expect (typically ride on right, hats on left). Provided I don't have my headphones on backwards, I'll just presume it's an opposite hemisphere thing that I wouldn't understand.

Nine tunes with Neil spanning almost my entire time as a "virtual drummer" constitutes a pretty good run, I guess. If you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go have a good cry now ... :-)

I was going to ask you along for this particular ride, but you seemed so busy with other stuff, and I was pretty happy with how the drums came out - the new little fill was used so much because I got so excited to have figured out how to do it :) No idea about the pan thing - I'm not sure how to pan the various bits of the kit in the midi window, so it just must have been the way it's set up in Logic - or maybe I'm a left handed midi drummer?

As usual, you are too kind with your comments - I'm definitely happy that the songs sound good to you of course, and hope that we continue to work together - I suspect my drums on this were a bit of a fluke, and stick by my contention that a good "real" drummer will always sound better than a good midi drummer.

John is of course a brilliant addition to any track, and, like you, I love what he's done here (and on the other songs we've done together - some with you also on board).

I have a plan in mind for next year which very much involves you - I hope you'll have some space in your diary! I'll send you an email.

such complete polish not just the mix and instrument placement.... but also the parts played.... I love the turn arounds and the drums are programed perfectly.... one of the hardest things in this craft is making the drums breath and be human... excellent Neil.... this is beynd good... John is my fav keyboard player @ MJ... quite the complete player...

Speaker leaper
This launched itself out of my speakers - you REALLY know how to mix and master... i could really do with a few weeks/ months looking over your shoulder...
I bought Nectar and really like it, though am mainly just playing with presets. This has a ol' Jiguma rasp and is a real little toe tapper. Great organ use (!?), and as, ever totally pro sounding.
