Description
I lead the music at church.... this often involves quite a bit of arranging.... Every Christmas we sing the same music, so I really wanted to introduce something new... in the process of working this out in the studio, I was programing some drums.... and on a whim I asked my son Ian to play this with me, while only a Sophomore in high School, he’s starting to show some very real talent and understanding of the instrument.... needless to say, I was more than pleasantly surprised.... so I’d like to introduce my son Ian Carmichael on drums and my son Dane played Bass... so the band is all my sons and myself... I use these mp3’s to teach vocal parts to the team of musicians... but i was happy with this and decided to post it...

Merry Christmas...

Lyrics
God rest ye merry gentlemen Let nothing you dismay
Remember, Christ, our Saviour Was born on Christmas day
To save us all from Satan's power When we were gone astray
O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

Fear not then said the Angel, This is your promised night
For now is born the Lamb of God to save man from his plight
To free all those who trust in Him From Satan's power and might."
O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

Tidings of comfort tidings of joy
heaven has spoken his mercy deployed
the dead will soon rise up and blind men will see
these chains have been broken
and we shall be free

Now to the Lord sing praises, All you within this place,
And with true love and brotherhood Each other now embrace;
As we become the vessles of His tenderness and grace
O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

Tidings of comfort tidings of joy
heaven has spoken his mercy deployed
the dead will soon rise up and blind men will see
these chains have been broken
and we shall be free

Hi Karen
they'd say chips off the old "block head"... I really was surprised because he reached this level so quickly... turn around and they grow 5 inches and an attitude...

Family event!
Very nicely done Scott (as expected). It must be brilliant to have your sons along for the ride in a family band.
Cheers from Oz!!!

I love family bands
especially talented ones like this. I like the 6/8 for this. The bridge adds a modern touch that's the 'something new' fresh touch. I'm glad you posted it! Are the bridge lyrics your own? They add a layer of meaning. That kind of thing doesn't always work well, but it does here.

Hi Kristy
I wrote the bridge or B-section... to my ears, verse after verse became tedious.... and I was just hearing where I thought it could go for relief.... the interludes are actually in 5/4... part of my surprise was how seamlessly he transitioned to alternate meters... not always easy for a drummer to pull off...

thanx.... nice to hear from you... Merry Christmas

Love a family jam
Tho this carries it a couple of levels above what my Dad and sibs could do! Y'all are talented. The production is first rate, too. I can see why you "were happy with this."

It's is a very cool thing... and I'm surprised at how good they are... at 21 years old.... Dane is a way better musician than me... my friends call him when they have a gig, and need players.... they don't call me any more

Wow!
This is wonderful on so many levels... It is a very creative arrangement of a classic; it is performed beautifully; it is heartwarming to know that you did this with your sons; Ian is an amazing drummer! My 9 year old is taking drum lessons, and the possibility that he would one day be able to do something like this with me is fantastic... How old is Dane? He does a great job here too. And who plays the cool electric piano licks? All very jazzy. I am amazed at the talent level in your family!

HI Professor
Dane is 21.... he has appeared from time to time on my recordings... but this was Ian's maiden voyage... I loved it... I played the piano parts... my mom is visiting, and she's a piano player, she like to sit in the studio and watch/listen as I put stuff together.... she said that it's complete now that it has piano...

Thanx my friend

Yeah, it's got 31 flavors of good...
...and you know what I like best? The acoustic lead playing... Go figure...

Neat harmonies all through, too... It's nice to hear real drum playing... For obvious reasons, that's probably the most often looped, sampled or programmed element in MacJams songs... A real drummer's feel brings back a certain kind of life and interaction to a song...

It's good to hear the father and son team doing this, too... I am very partial to that sort of thing....
Scott Carmichael said 2391 days ago (December 6th, 2010)
the acoustic leads
were the main reason that I posted this.... and now I know that you listened all the way through... I was so impressed with his drumming, and so aware that a drummer "brings back a certain kind of life and interaction to a song"... that we're now going to update my whole song list with real drums...

when will we hear the new guitar????

What a talented team, and such a glorious and refreshing version of this beautiful carol. The drums are great, bass and guitar work is sweet, and the singing is creamy. Always so wonderful to hear something new from you, Scott.
