Time Passing Me By (2010)

Description
My moods swing from optimism to pessimism, up and then down; I know... no one can relate ;-) The pessimism is probably more fruitful in terms of connecting with reality... not a bad thing. This is a song from early 2007... in one of my moods then. I wanted to remix and repost this. It echoes a bit of me. I kinda like it.

An acoustic guitar and vocal song with some harmonica thrown in...

Photo: me on the rocks, Dingle Peninsula - Ireland 1998.

Lyrics
You ask of me, tell me now what do you do?
And I shake my head, as I pause to reply.
I'm here punching a clock, each day just spinning my wheels.
I guess I'm trying to come to grips with time passing me by.

It is said somewhere, all this sweat and toil... I know I've read it
It is but a curse, for every man to bear.
Thorns and thistles, they are the daily yeild of my soil.
I'm just working to come to grips with time passing me by.

Bridge:
Through the sweat of this wearied face
Comes each day my daily bread.
And in this dust of ground that still battles me
One day, Lord knows, I'll rest my head.

You ask of me, tell me now what do you do?
And I shake my head, as I pause to reply
I'm here living my life, yeilding my heart to His plan.
I think I'm finally coming to grips with time passing me by...
I guess I'm finally coming to grips with time passing me by.

dylanesque
I struggle to put a finger on what era of Dylan this reminds me of, but it's definitely there. Nice folk harmonica -- very clean playing, cleaner than a lot of Dylan's work. I'd like it higher in the mix, actually. The vocals are really great, and I like the harmonies, they're rambling and feel free. The lyrics are quite good -- familiar themes, well-communicated. This is just very well done. Nice work!

thank you tf...
I really appreciate the comments. I went back and forth on the harp volume... maybe I chose too low. Very nice to have you take the time to listen.

Steinbeck
Nice. Enjoyed it. Dylan is in there, as the previous commentator suggested, i think, and there is something in the range and theme of this song that brings Steinbeck's novels to mind, too, for me. Don't know if he played a mean guitar or not!

Cheers for the post.

the lines...
there's a number of Biblical allusions in this song, thorns and thistles being one of them. So hat tip to the writer of Genesis. ;-)
Thanks Stan for dropping by and the nice comments.

The world weariness and halting phrases in the vocals go nicely with the theme. The picked guitar and harmonica do as well. Solid structure. Nice job!

Aren't we all Jack, aren't we all !
What a great song, Jack. The lyrics ring so true for all of us, but of course the young won't understand them just yet. In time they will.

An excellent mix with clean guitar, clear vocals, & harmonies. Either I was so intent on the lyrics that I missed it, or there is no harmonica in the mix on this version. Being old and deaf, it could be either.

Very nice song that touches me, my friend.

Ed.....
Yep. Too true for us all. And as you write, the older one gets the truer. Good to know you like the mix. Yeah, there is a harp playing along, though maybe a mite to low in volume. Hang in there and thanks.

A man, a guitar and a harmonica
Hi Jack. Nice song. Thoughtful lyrics that I can relate to. I like the sparse arrangement and the subtle harmonies. A man, a guitar and a harmonica - how more simple can it be. Thanks. Take care, Peter.

from a simple man... who experiences bouts of complexity that bottoms in songs like this. Thanks Peter. Very nice to read your comments.

I love this song Jack
shows your other side, love your vocal here and the very tasteful use oh the harmonica as it should be, so many people overplay a straight harp, well done!

passing time
nicely redone Jack. have the harmonica farther back as you have it here works really well as a supporting instrument, not drawing to much attention to but still knowing its there.

Personal...
I really like the presentation of this ballad, Jack. You have kept every element simple and attentive to the text of your lyrics. A more complex arrangement would have destroyed the personal and very honest nature of this wonderful little song. It's because of that simplicity that this song easily stands completely on its own as just a very fine composition. Glad I heard it.

my thoughts
on the mater have developed over time... looking under the hood, one sees that the curse is from the hand of a benevolent and loving God... it has been as instrumental as the north star as I navigate this life...

good melencholy song Jack... the guitar sounds great too///

My take also....
exactly Scott... the curse is transformed into a blessing, though we struggle under its effects in this life, it teaches us through His grace - obedience, contentment, and thankfulness for His abundant love and patience toward us.

Thanks for your comments and God's blessings to you and yours.

I think the
harnonica could come a little bit more forward in the mix...I get the Dylanesque references from tf10 except for one thing...I always cringe when dylan plays the 'monica...in fact the first coupla times I heard him I really thought that it was a piss take 'cos he cannot sing and his harp blowing is dreadful.....unlike here where tthe singing is excellent and what can be heard of the 'monica is musical and melodic.....Fave and D/L

I've just started in the last coupla months to play the harp and have been critiqued and advised by tf10 ....any tips...I play one in the bath ....don't ask !
