Description
by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Another crack at orchestral strings in GarageBand '11. Much attention to dynamics, whether players would be sawing away legato, or lifting the bow between notes, and how much "dig" on the attack. This meant making track by track, note by note volume changes for attack and sustain / decay on about 1/4 of the notes in the piece. Tedious, but I believe it helps.

I'll also be on the lookout for string samples in soundfonts, etc. for next time.

Tedious work...
...but your results are awfully good. There is a feeling here that you are recording this live, though in a VERY resonant hall. Strings are so hard to simulate with plug-ins, but I think you have shown there are great possibilities out there. I do not have the patience for this way of working, but I certainly can appreciate the time-consuming work you put in on this.

Resonant...
...as in cathedral, which is the basic reverb I used. Since this is a very slow-paced piece, it can stand a long reverb, which also aids in filling in thin spots in the string sections. MIDI strings are not impossible, as several people here have shown, but I'd like my own to come closer to their level. As is, there's still a whiff of Mellotron in the sound.

You're a better man than I
I rarely put that much effort into programming notes and such. I can really hear the care you've put in. And it pays off, creating wonderful emotion with the dynamics in this. Makes for a lovely humanistic playing. Nicely done!

The secret is...
... to vary dynamics constantly. This file had thousands of volume changes originally made by riding virtual faders in Vision. As the music swells loud and deep, slow the tempo by a few BPM, and pick up the pace imperceptibly as it fades. There is a complex tempo track which I had to recreate, as GarageBand doesn't import MIDI tempo changes.

Wow!
I've done a (very) little of that note-by-note volume changing and I'm impressed. You've set a high bar here for future work of this kind. Which will probably be by you ;-) Nice accomplishment.

Amazing!
I can't even begin to imagine the amount of work that went into this. I played this piece a time or two in college and have always loved it. You've done an amazing job with it here.
