Description

I promised a fuller version of the demo I posted in September. It is now a lot fuller than even I was initially imagining! Normally I'd say something self-deprecating about my tendency for layers and cheesy 80s production; but not for this one - it feels naturally massive and everything in it needs to be there. Feel free to let me know if you disagree, though :)

If you are familiar with the demo you might enjoy the change at 1:50 - I was going for something like when the drums kick in on 'Stairway to Heaven', the most important moment in rock history, in my opinion.

This will (soon) see a release on the second EP of my Japanese Idioms project. The first EP can be streamed and purchased at: www.dantimmermans.com

I remember this one. I thought the guitar sounded like a fretless bass. I love the way you've opened up in the vocals. I hear a lot more clarity in the lead vocal than on the demo. The vocal arrangement hear is wonderful. The instrumental arrangement is great. Great mix and production. Downloaded!

And the most important moment in rock history is Keith Richards' opening riff in Satisfaction!

This is beautiful and better then anything being put out in the top 40 world! People like you need to be noticed , Love when it kicks in the back up vocals add such an uplifting dimension to this! The drums in the lead part are perfect ! A download for future listens the way it comes back in at 4:00 is greatness ! The outro singing, man this is tops real pro to me!

	really cool Some of your phrasings were reminscent of bluegrass, the song itself has a nice acoustic folk rock vibe. Very interesting structure on this too. Love the non conventional nature of this. thanks for your comment and glad you enjoyed the track. I was always bugged by the quick pace of the demo - the guitar and lead vocal were recorded together without a click, so I guess the pace was just what came naturally. but when you're gonna add more parts you've gotta create some room, right? The tempo feels right now, and I'm glad you noticed it :)

hey dan. i love the urgency of the guitar and how it takes you with it. the section at 1.30 is SUBLIME...very clever diversion and really confident harmony. the transition into the rock section is seamless and goes on just long enough. the slow down at 2.50 works perfectly and the atmos synth sounds with the guitar noodling is a dream. ...and the harmonised guitar licks at 3.57 are a great way back into the groove although they are so perfect i would have enjoyed them for another few bars so they could really establish themselves and then build in a big way. the a capella stuff at the end is a brave but perfectly executed way out. a really quick five minutes eighteen seconds....because you manage to weave together contrasting elements in a professional and assured manner. great track...great writing. thanks for coming over to me so i could come back to you.

I love the depth and detail you go into when commenting; it's very helpful. 'urgency' was definitely a goal for that opening guitar because it has a lot to carry and I used a slower tempo on this version. very interesting to hear your opinion on the closing sections - I am toying with the notion of repeating and building the section before the a capella a little more. again, thanks for the time you've taken.

Wow. Really cool update. What a transformation. The banjo is an interesting touch, but IMHO it should drop out when the lead guitar kicks in. The song should kind-of break out and the banjo is cool in the beginning, but feels like it is holding the song back after the transition. Actually I am pretty partial to the lead guitar that kicks in at 2:30, really cool. Then is winds down til 4:00 then back up into a groovin vamp with stomps and claps, love the acapella fade out. Great work Dan. Always inpressed by the cinematic scope of your stuff and the complexity of the arrangements. Dig it.

the moment I realised I could mess with tempos in this newer version of garageband I knew three things: a) it'd be fricking great! b) it'd be dangerous, and c) I'd better develop some self-control. turns out, changing tempos in GB can be a bit of pain and it really does demand planning (necessitating quite a lot of rerecording) but I do love the possibilities it opens up.

harmonies and nice, unconventional vocals. I love the full sound, and I think that this, like all of your work, is of a high quality. By the time the 2-minute mark rolled around, I was ensnared. The one thing I wish had been different was the repeated line in the 1:30-1:50 period. I felt like it wasn't the greatest choice given that it was the most cliched line in the song, to my ears (there weren't many cliches, so that is a very picky comment). I definitely thought the last 2/3 of the song blew the first third out of the water both musically and lyrically (" so if you dress her in assumptions and feed her someone else's line..."). I do think you have a remarkable piece of work here, really. I look forward to hearing more.

Instead of going on about all this tunes great stuff (which is very many) and give you a big head ;o) my only nit/suggestion was perhaps to think about recording the acoustic with a mic .. the peizo? pick-ups/direct give that "live unplugged" sound and perhaps this might be improved a little without that. Excellent work and thanks for the download.

I remember the "original" of this
and while I really liked the "demo" version I think your love of layers require no apology--the range of dynamics, timbre, and intensity here make it well worth the 5.25 minutes of listening! I'm a big fan of the dreamy vibe pre 1:50 but the rock build really worked for me.

I was just listening to the newish Sufjan Stevens album before checking this out and there are some similarities in your vocal sound and orchestrations at points--and I mean that as a compliment!

This is more than great Dan. The hard work was worth it. I like the movement and color you gave to this track. It grows and grows.
The mix is excellent. It shines from wherever you look at it.

The most defining moment in rock history to me must be when Jimmi Hendrix set his Marshall at 11 for the first time. No recording of that event though ;-)
