In The Bleak Midwinter

Description
This is a Christmas Carol I had never heard before about 5 years ago, when I first listened to the gorgeous live version on Jane Siberry’s album “Child”. I was immediately captivated by the tune and it's beautiful chord changes and worked up my own version of it on the piano. I’ve since learned that this is actually an alternative to the original Gustav Holst melody of 1906 (which itself was composed for the poem by Christina Rossetti.) This less-well-known alternate melody was written by Harold Darke, and is therefore known as the “Darke setting” of the carol. For whatever reason I’ve been particularly obsessed with playing “Bleak Midwinter” this Christmas season, and then it dawned on me last week that I could record it! There is something about this tune that really yanks at my heart – I hope you enjoy this very bare bones version. Merry Christmas MJ!

Special thanks to Chris (PickQuickRecords) for the Logic effects lesson yesterday!

Gorgeous-
nearly first, then I had to go correct typos... he he

Karen, I never heard this either and it sent me to wander thru the internet on a research mission. Here are the words to the poem that Holst and others derived the song from. http://www.hymnsandcarolsofchristmas.com/Hymns_and_Carols/in_the_bleak_midwinter.htm
and it talks of the humble royalty of the birth of Jesus.
Simply beautiful!

Great
This is a very clean sound you are getting. I love the structure of this piece. I can see why it haunted you so. I often wish i had taken lessons on the piano so that I could play this very style. Oh well at least i get to listen to you playing it.

Hi Gaylen
i'm getting a weird little squeaky noise in my Ivory instruments on Bb2, and since this starts in Eb and next goes to F, there are a lot of them. i found a not-too-bad EQ fix. i think i'm just hearing it for the first time because i haven't recorded much slow solo piano in these keys. anyway - glad it's sounding good to you - it sure is a project getting solo piano to sound decent! merry christmas!

nonbleak
bleak:
1a. Gloomy and somber
1b. Providing no encouragement; depressing
2. Cold and cutting; raw
3. Exposed to the elements; unsheltered and barren

nope!

how about:
1. Favorably disposed; not antagonistic
2. Warm; comforting

much better!

thanks

Not bleak at all!
Things are pretty sparse at midwinter, at least around here, so this pared-down sound - essentially you and the piano - is fittingly sparse. And yet it is rich with all the special touches and nuances you've brought to the pairing.
Very nice, and thank you. Hope you have a wonderful holiday.

How strange...
I first heard this about two weeks ago when I accompanied a church choir singing it. Yes. A very pretty melody, and you do a sensitive job playing it, too. (Ah, rubato lives!!! Good for you.) This song should be heard more during the season. Maybe you are on the cusp of a wave to come. Hope so.

you know paul, the only time i resort to a click track is when i'm going to be adding in a bunch of orchestral instruments - lol - it's not how i USUALLY play! it's been fun to post a couple of solo piano pieces - i can't get over how easy it is compared to orchestrating!! glad you enjoyed this, and i agree that i wish a lot more people were familiar with this gorgeous carol - we're doing our part! merry christmas paul!

Simple and gorgeous....
I haven't heard this alternative melody.... While I love the one that I think of as 'original', this sounds wonderful as well... This is a carol that I didn't know at all until I was in my thirties, when I suddenly heard it everywhere...

Hearing you play just piano lets me hear and appreciate your touch on the instrument, and that's a very cool thing...
magnatone said 888 days ago (December 19th, 2010)
Hi Ed
I was hoping you might stop by! It's funny how this carol is one so many of us came to later in life - but then once we finally hear it, we really appreciate it. I'm always surprised that something I've heard for the first time so relatively recently has gone so far "in", but it sure has. Happy Holidays to you Ed!

in the greek mid-winter
remarkably, this is one of the few carols that doesn't make me want to kill somebody (them being generally asinine and turgid). in the bleak midwinter however has something special about it - it gives you that sense of shit being piled high....but that the good times will return. i think i mentioned kathleen ferrier on another of your songs. this is definitely something she would sound amazing on. your rendition of it brings out the power of the chord changes. the ral at 3.30 is particularly poignant, and the flourishes afterwards are the silver lining after the storm. it almost makes you want to believe in some 'higher being'...but only momentarily...because that would be hilariously insane.....oops. god-lube...you heard it first, here, on macjams.

Hi Karen,

Lovely. My father used to sing this as a choir boy at Salisbury Cathedral before the war and was one of his favourite carols. Playing it on the piano makes for a more reflective mood, and i found myself immersed in many pleasant memories of the old man.

Enjoyed it.

Bleak, eh?
With all of the words ("bleak", "Darke") and the vaguely ominous accompanying artwork selected, I fully expected a minor key. Instead, this was a very happy sounding piece. Which works to help me get into the spirit of the season, thanks!

Obviously this is wonderfully presented and played and beautifully recorded (hooray for Ivory, whichever version). Excellent pace, as most clearly shown in your graceful birds' eye (fermata) pauses. Doesn't get much better - thanks for sharing.

In the Bleak Midwinter
I'm not sure why, but I get this REALLY strong Ken Burns documentary feeling from this. Like the music from the Civil War one. Why? Hmmmm, anyway, no matter, ...well, maybe it's because it really pulls at your hear strings and is so dramatic but in a mildly bold and anthemic sort of way. Beautifully played. Thanks Karen.

What a treat
to know that the lovely and tragic Christina Rossetti is somehow associated with this. Although I have mixed feelings about Mr Holst, this is a fine melody, and you play it very tenderly. This rather melancholy tune ("Darke setting" seems a bit misleadingly bleak, don't you think?) is very fitting for this cold and spare winter. I enjoyed this immensely! Thank you, dear.

Love,

MoM

Hi MoM
yes, the tragic Christina wrote the poem that was later set to music by Holst, after the poem won some big contest in the UK, i believe. it does seem kind of funny to me too that this is the "DARKE setting" for the BLEAK midwinter - talk about buzz kill! but then it turns out to be a lovely melody which is also so very fun to play. thank you MoM for your continued support - whoever the heck you are!

Pretty Bleak
Um... That should really be: "Pretty! Bleak?"

... But the point is that this begins as a very pretty version of the song, but then it does something I have never heard before in this song, which is that it builds into a very rousing, stirring climax, before returning to the quieter, beautiful playing of the opening.

Thanks for the history lesson too! I didn't know all that backstory about this carol.

Last
Christmas seems to have built up quite a "coolection" of songs here at MJ that I have yet to listen to...

This is one of my favorite carols, I think since I heard it sung in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol at a theatre here in Stockholm many years ago. Also I remember Cyndi Lauper's version - of all ;-) Both these were the Holst-version it seems and therefor it feels a bit strange at first to hear this one, but I have downloaded and am sure I will be liking this one as much in no time. Thanks for sharing. And have a wonderful 2011.

I love the Winter
Just sat at the window looking at the snow on the mountains here in Pigeon Forge TN and listened to this song frame the moment. Great sentimentality without saying a word. Good job.

My favourite Carol
... I love the bleakness, no pun intended, of this tune. I use to love singing this as a kid (dark even then!). You play so delicately, with such strong sense of melody Karen. Really beautiful.

Spartan
Beautiful in it's starkness. Why have a big production when you can create art single-handed like this? Really dig how you were influenced.

My 1st time hearing this and though I am one month late in getting a listen to it, I am 11 months early for the next time around! Listening to this delicate piece felt more like a February tune anyhow..:) or 'mid-winter' .. Soft as fallen snow.. Thank you for sharing it

It reminded me of America the Beautiful or a song of that nature. Could be an anthem hymnal for the ages.
