Description
This is a Christmas Carol I had never heard before about 5 years ago, when I first listened to the gorgeous live version on Jane Siberry’s album “Child”. I was immediately captivated by the tune and it's beautiful chord changes and worked up my own version of it on the piano. I’ve since learned that this is actually an alternative to the original Gustav Holst melody of 1906 (which itself was composed for the poem by Christina Rossetti.) This less-well-known alternate melody was written by Harold Darke, and is therefore known as the “Darke setting” of the carol. For whatever reason I’ve been particularly obsessed with playing “Bleak Midwinter” this Christmas season, and then it dawned on me last week that I could record it! There is something about this tune that really yanks at my heart – I hope you enjoy this very bare bones version. Merry Christmas MJ!
