Speak Softly (APOD)

Description
Once upon a time, Particledots recorded a song; not sure what happened to the original song idea of Bryn's, but he ended up reversing all the tracks and put it in our shared dropbox (we in APOD love to recycle). I heard it and was blown away by it. reminded me of Eno "Here Come The Warm Jets." I then wrote a song over his backwards song, so you have a whole song playing backwards, while a different song is playing forward simultaneously (this was kind of a challenge to mix). I actually think it's kind of seasonal as it's about remembering to be kind to your fellow man.

I would say this is really an APOD track, but there is a new APOD song up, so I'm just posting it here. It would never have happened without Bryn's awesome base track, or Kevins guitar; he added some guitar parts that were made by scraping a pottery tool across the strings like a bow. Very spacious sounds. The end result reminds me of Eno and David Bowie. In keeping with the spirit of it, I borrowed 2 lines from Eno's Oblique Strategies cards.

Particledots: drums (forwards and reverse), sax, glitchwork, reverse guitar, reverse bass, reverse organ, reverse bells

Bud: metal space bowed guitar treatments

Michael: percussion, basses, vocals, synths, ebow, piano, glockenspiel

Lyrics
speak softly, breathe deeply
walk with purpose, judge no one
turn it upside down, try harder
control your anger, love all men

change nothing, change everything
think of all men as your equal
speak softly, breathe deeply
walk with purpose, judge no one
turn it upside down, try harder
control your anger, love all men

Oh
This is just great. Awkwardly relaxing :)
Your vocals fit perfectly over the mesmerising tracks. I'm a fan of reversed effects but usually fail at any attempts.
This is a winner! If only the stone roses had APODs skills... Then they wouldn't have nearly ruined their first album with that awful 'don't stop' reverse track :)

Nice one guys

ha
you know there are moments in that Stone Roses song where it's really good. the beginning is an awesome groove. the backwards stuff is hard to just figure out where to put stuff as there really isn't a whole lot of consistency. maybe i'll reverse this, and then we can write a different song over that. thanks for checking this out, glad you like.

That voice...
is amazing. I have to agree this totally relaxes me. Cool use and reuse of tracks. Love the lyrics. But mostly enjoyed that voice!

thanks
thanks. not really all that confident of my voice (originally started singing since I couldn't find singers as a kid); nice to get the vocal compliments now and again. glad you stopped by and checked it out.

yup
that's a good one. I was actually in a band before and we put out a limited edition backwards edition of our then current record. the reverse version was probably better. thanks for stopping by.

Quietly hypnotic
Hi Michael, I have enough trouble playing things forwards, let alone thinking about how it might sound running backwards :) This piece is quietly hypnotic and calming. Apt lyrics for the season. Thanks to all concerned. Take care, Peter.

thanks
glad you liked. it got a little confusing a couple of times. i can remember emails that were along the lines of "wait, do I need to reverse this again to make it work?"

Great final mix Michael - this really shines
The lyrics really do it for me - and your delivery is perfect. APOD is a gas - Bryn is a genius. I love all the recycling - keeps me looking at everything from multiple perspectives.

Nice!
I'll have to try and figure out how to reverse tracks. The results are interesting.

Cool vocals and nicely flowing song.

thanks man
it's pretty easy in Logic: highlight a track and go to sample editor/functions/reverse. if you're on Garageband you need to get Audacity or some other audio editor to do it for you (also good for reverse reverb).

Oh yeah
Reverse reverbe would be a crazy effect.

That'll give me something to try and figure out.

Recycling
That should be a genre, I must admit your voice always has such a warm strained calming direct approach that I find so appealing. The backwards effect, nothing could be better but rounding it out with a lightly played piano beautiful!

you're right
recycling, re-using, re-working, manipulating: it's all fun and games. thanks so much for the kind words. much appreciated. glad you enjoyed our track.

Heroic singing
Is the way I perceive your vocals...hymn-like,

fantastic stuff (again) michael

it is quite amazing how we can continue to reimagine the multiple permuations of all the ingredients we use in our music making

this is a beautiful, beautiful track

i think at some point we should consider an APOD version of here come the warm jets as it seems to be a reference point we constantly return to

hahaha
yer killing me. thanks though. i like the idea of finding ways to reuse things over and over. could go on infinitely (think of how many millions of phone numbers there are, and how there are only 9 numbers to choose from).

I would be thrilled to cover the Eno masterpiece.

I like...
... ted23's comment "awkwardly relaxing." Not a bad thing, definitely a compliment. Your vocals are some of the coolest I've heard anywhere. Great work here! When are we going to work on another tune (EZamor, are you reading this!! lol)? ;)

Wonderful
I LOVE the lyrics. And they're delivered perfectly. They didn't even stick out to me until the second listen when I was following along. Which, I think, shows a great balance in all facets of the song. I'm also amused that you fussed with mixing the backwards song with the new one on top of it. Shows why you guys do such clean, professional work. I would have employed the set-it-and-forget-it technique. Great job, guys!

Full speed forward, in reverse!
Interesting how that backward track sounds as a completely plausible backing for the forward track. Now you could reverse the whole thing and post the result....

Enjoyed.

I particularly like it....
...when the experimental efforts of people on MacJams turn into full fledged and very real songs...It passes from, "Hmm....interesting...this could become something...." to, "What a cool song!..."

I love the lyrics and vocals, and I do have a soft spot for reversed tracks... Keep promising myself I'll do something with some reversed something or other someday.....

Another Diamond...
This is another diamond in the rough. I proclaim you a Natural Wonder of Mac Jams! Very cool stuff. I've always loved backwards stuff. Radiohead's Like Spinning Plates comes to mind. Sweet job as usual!

Speak Softly
I like how rhythmically, your singing against the reverse track gives the the feeling of walking in a windstorm. And that adds some depth to the lyric "walk with purpose".

It's so good to hear you! Sounds great!
