Auld Lang Syne

Description
I recorded this in Nov. 09 (in my Airstream trailer in Tempe, AZ -- one of my last tour cities with Phantom) for the soundtrack accompanying Caroline's theatre production of "It's a Wonderful Life" in Cheltenham, England. I was honored that the performance of this song was included.

I started with a software orchestral harp track to build on, adding the acoustic instruments later. I then recorded the live harp track (on my little 26-string harp, "Erin"). I thought the two tracks sounded good enough together to preserve the software one. I then added the horn track.

To me, Auld Lang Syne brings up sad and wistful feelings, yet with hopes for the coming year. May the year 2011 bring you good things!

Firsties?!?
With which to ring in the new year?
Ed Hannifin said 2344 days ago (December 27th, 2010)
That's a neat setting, Cameron...
And, per usual, I don't know how to describe what I'm hearing...

It reminds me of John McCutcheon's version of 'Erev Shel Shoshanim', a bit... I like the way you're using the harp....

There's a nice, I don't know, optimistic melancholy to this, I guess.... Suitable for reflecting on the departing year and looking towards the one that approaches....

A new Auld
This version is quite striking. It took me a few cycles to become tuned in to the key. After two listenings now, I love the "blue" flavorings you have brought to this piece.

Tnanks for the dl :)

Wistful
is a good summary. I enjoyed the variation the wistfully plucked harp pattern gives this- in mood: a touch more sadness than hopefulness and letting bygones be bygones I felt. Very cleverly done: making something quite different and new from something so old and familiar. Have a great 2011 Cam.

So
very interesting .. I would never had come up with the idea to play this song in these chords, but something really interesting happens here. This makes up something really "strong" in want of better words. Rather interesting, I wanna try to play it like this on a guitar to see what happens. Very interesting. Thank you Cameron!

One of the...
... finest classical pieces I've heard at MJ in a while. I agree about the minor key here; new to my ears but perfectly done. I love the *real* feel of this number. Thanks for the download!! :)

I'm not a fan of New Years. I know it can be a day of hopeful looking forward. But I tend to mourn the year gone by. I'm just not in a hurry for the passage of time. I think the harp and horn capture that sense of sadness some of us feel at this time of year. I really enjoyed this unique arrangement of a familiar classic.

Phrygian
You're playing very nicely with the tonality of the tune, giving it a minor/major dichotomy, enhancing that wistful feeling of the tune. Excellent stuff. Harp and horn is an unlikely combination, but here it works a treat.

Melancholy
Instantly recognizable yet hauntingly different. This version adds further melancholy to what I always felt was a lament for the passing of time. Nice posting. Thanks.

Listening to this earlier
and got pulled away in mid song. This is really beautiful. The instruments sound awesome. Love that harp. You really captured the christmas spirit on this one. Sounds like you changed the mode of the melody slightly. Awesome!

A definite different
and yet quite stunning take on a traditional theme....actually not sure where it comes from ...Rabbie Burnsis often accredited with the song ,or at least the lyrics but this is also equally often much refuted ! ...anyway,

top notch...Happy New Year to you.

best

Mournful
Auld Lang Syne always has a bittersweet quality — as a child I couldn't hear it without bursting into tears — but this has a very interesting, mournful quality, by playing it in the minor mode. Your live instruments are played marvelously, as is expected from a superb performer such as yourself, but the whole arrangement is also extremely well done as well. Very fine work here!

It's a wonderful piece
I was in Caroline's production of "It's a Wonderful Life" and, yes, this piece was played in the funeral scene. The minor key is so beautiful yet sombre, what with the sorrowful scene itself, it was really hard not to cry too much during it.

Delicious, and the horn, finally!
A really eerily beautiful minor rendition of this, a tune already melancholy, but this twist makes it quite heart-tugging. Love your horn work, although it sounds like its recorded with a little EQ hotspot in the midrange and makes it a little boomy on certain notes. But wow do I love this... I assume you came up with this arrangement? Absolutely faved, I can see why Caroline snagged this up!

this is totally
beautiful. I have always thought that this song was very sad...lombardo made it SAD...but this version hits the sad button and holds it....love the transitioning of the whole thing to the minor side...just really cool

happy new year, pal!

Wonderful mood window
Cam, finally came over to MacJams to listen to this. Lovely and haunting. Putting it in the minor key gives it a wonderful twist, light and then pensive. Brilliant work, Cam!
