Description
Stephen - Vocals, Piano, Strings
Andrew Lack- Guitar, Bass, Production
Scott Fugate - Drums & Percussion

The song was written around 1997 by my good friend John Carlin and we both worked on the music to John's lyric sheet. It was always a slow simple song and I think we played it live a few times in our band and always liked the easy feel of it.

When looking for a new song of ours to update on Garageband, this was one I was looking forward to so that I could realise what I'd only heard in my head. Turns out my creation wasn't all I hoped it could be and I was pretty dissatisfied. I'd been hoping to work with Alackbass for the longest time and he kindly agreed to help shape this one into a better condition. Immediately I was impressed with Andrew's attention to detail and dedication to the cause. He is as many of you know a great mind of musical ideas and has a superb ear. For me, getting a good vocal track was a tough job as I just didn't seem to be able to do it to my satisfaction and as the production progressed, vocal takes came and went with amendments, improvements and arrangement changes till I got what you hear here. We quickly worked together trying out ideas and arrangements and it was Andrew's idea to get Scott in on drums and percussion. I'd not worked with Scott before either and he, like Andrew, was a real pleasure.

Lyrics
Laughing On Both Sides Of Your Face

I'm coming home on the next train, can't wait to see you all again
But I'll hardly know the old place and I heard that you've been doing me wrong
And you'll be laughing on both sides of your face

Momma told me on the phone today that the way you felt about me has changed
What did I do, what's your case? I never loved another while I was away
But you're laughing on both sides of your face

My eyes are open wide now. You kept it all inside now

I can't sleep these days since I heard that all this time you never ever cared now
Now I just want to leave this old place because it's lost anything special it ever had
And you're laughing on both sides of your face

My eyes are open wide now. You kept it all inside now

I'm coming home on the next train, felt good to see you all again
But I hardly knew the old place and the news about you has knocked me right down
And you're laughing on both sides of your face

Laughing On Both Sides Of Your Face
Thanks Stephen for asking me to join in on this one. As I told you early on I really dug the British Invasion vibe in this song. I also like how the sound of your voice brings to my mind the image of John Lennon chewing gum while singing All You Need is Love (so cool). You forgot to give yourself credit for the brass (a very cool part of the arrangement).

Scott,
It was a pleasure working with you on this one. You gave this the "human feel" it needed.

Thanks Papag. The vocals took a while to get right I have to say. I'm not the most able singer so plenty of takes, plenty of edits and plenty of do overs. Fortunately I had Andrew on board to make the best of what I could do! Thanks for the DL - hope you enjoy it!

Very cool
The vocal didnt do the expected in this piece. Very interesting mix of instruments on this too. Pianissimo strings part was a cool touch. Warm vocal tone. Of course Andrew did a great job on the msuic and production as scott did with is drum part. Pro sounding track!

Thanks Charles. I was very lucky to have Andrew and Scott on board to make this as good as it could be. First off excellent live feel mix. The song has a real natural flow to it carried by the Stephen's nice vocals, very easy to listen to. The rhythm section is really tight, nice job by Andrew and Scott , especially during the bridge sections. Very well written, performed and produced. Thanks for the dL!

Ahh a thumbs up from Dani is like extra gumby bonus points! It was Andrew's idea to bring in Scott as I'd not worked with him before and he was right on the money. Awesome drumming and percussion. Lyrics were by my friend John Carlin so got to give credit where it's due. Eventually I'll run out of his songs and you'll be left with my dodgy "I feel free up in a tree having a pee" style lyrics! And what can I say about Mr Lack? Every musician should have one. Thank you very much Dani - really appreciate it.

Ah you're too kind about my piano playing. One day I will be as proficient as you, but it'll be in another life with different fingers, more patience and less sticking out of the tongue. I'd wanted to work with Andrew for ages and he transformed what was a messy demo into all I hoped it could be. Definite dedication to the cause and puts his heart, soul, mind and the rest into what he's doing. Scott was a great addition, on Andrew's suggestion. We just gave him an early version and he quickly sent us four different drum takes and took requests for additional percussion in his stride. What a great guy. Thanks very much Karen - you're a saint!

Seamless production, boys....
Everything is in such great balance here, which, isn't as common as we'd all like it to be here at MJ, so three cheers just for that! Perfect eq and panning of the percussion, great dynamics, good transitions, kept my attention, understated and simple, but memorable. I enjoyed it very much. Good work Stephen, Andrew, Scott.

Concur
I concur with a few standout notes from your song Description.

First, that the song has an "easy feel" ... from the tempo to the laid back beat to the subtle orchestral accompaniment, that is the flavor that really jumps out, and everybody's got it going well. You and John have crafted a very neat retro progression that's certifiably hooky. I like the unexpected delay that sets up each chorus - that's a neat songwriter's device (when used judiciously, as you have).

Second, that you were "impressed with Andrew's attention to detail and dedication to the cause" ... having worked with him on quite a few songs now, those characterizations are very appropriate. In any other environment, you'd have to pay somebody to do what Andrew does. Oops - maybe I'd better not say that, lest he start charging us.

Thirdly, you described working with Scott as "a real pleasure" ... even though I've not worked with him on a song yet, I feel I can agree with you based solely on interactions I've had with Scott in chat as well as his track record of quality drum tracks. His portfolio speaks for itself - I aspire to have half the chops and technique that Scott has.

Fianlly, a question: do you know if Andrew applied any pitch correction on your voice? I don't think you need it at all, I just thought I heard some artifacting/warbling at 3:02 ("old place"), but that just might be your natural vibrato. Even if correction was used, it was done subtly.

Thank you for sharing this one with us.
alackbass said 2517 days ago (December 29th, 2010)

Cheers Mike. The easy feel owes a lot to Andrew's guitar, which I loved the first time I heard it. I even lobbied for this to just have guitars at one point! Seriously! Andrew disagreed and we moved on. To be honest, John and I have no idea what we're doing. We just try things and if neither of us disagree then it passes. We even did a song called "George's number 6 classical bloody folksong" but eventually changed the title after we'd stopped laughing.

Andrew's attention to detail is phenomenal, especially so since this is a song that he's not actually written himself, so that investment in getting everything right is all the more impressive. I hope he understands how much everyone he works with appreciates his hard work. From now on when I'm being shoddy I'll be imagining him looking over my shoulder shaking his head! And if he ever starts charging we'll be in trouble!

Scott just came in and exceeded all my expectations, both musically and personally. I wondered who this "Scofugate" was that kept appearing on all these collabs - well, now I know. And I'm really glad he agreed to play on this and lend us his talents.

Re the pitch correction, as Andrew has said, it's au natural - I doubt he'd entertain the idea even if I had asked. I've had a few listens to try and discern what that was and can only put it down to some dodgy warbling on my part. Vibrato is a terrible singing habit I have that I'm trying to get out of, so perhaps it's that as you say. The vocal take was made up of a cut of different takes and there had been some poor editing on my part on an earlier version before I re did it. Could also be I missed this bit in my corrections. Will have to have a listen to it solo - you've got me wondering now!

Thanks very much for the detailed and well thought out feedback Mike - I really appreciate a good hard listen and constructive commentary. Gives me something to work with and build on. Cheers.

Laughing On Both Sides Of Your Face
Clean sounding arrangement reminiscent of 70's acts such as the Eagles. Well structured in AABA format. "laughing on both sides of your face" is a good hook and it appears in the right place.Very nice vocal, and the all star band does a great job of nailing the parts. From a songwriting perspective I think it could be stronger if you revealed more about the situation described in the verse in the bridge section ("My eyes are open wide now")which is pretty short.

...one of the finest tracks to come down the pike (and there's been a lot of great ones in the recent past). Extremely well crafted songwriting and not a thing three listens could find to nitpick about in the performance or the mix. I shall include myself in the "rest of you" category! I'll get my gentleman certificate someday, but probably not this week..! We were all very bought into this one which is kinda cool since it's a tune some schoolkids wrote back in the 90's for their little fledgling band. Makes me happy that I can now realise these old tunes to better potential than what was a couple of kids beating the life out of a guitar and bass to try and make a decent noise. As a wise man once said, "I'm just trying to find a decent melody, a song that I can sing in my own company." Thanks for the kind words Michael. Flattery will get you elected as the mayor of Gumbytown! And happy new year to you to!
