Description

So I have been listening to a lot of british invasion bands lately (as well as my usual diet of sad electronic music). This song is my attempt at the Zombies "Odessey and Oracle." Except sometimes it sounds more like an indie band trying to sound like the Kinks (with backups from an old Who single). It's pop, but not with the usual structure, and it's kind of sad.

Was just telling the guys in APOD how I have gotten away from my old "bash it out quick and use no more than 8 tracks" school of recording; this is a return to that. I spent the most time on getting the drum track the way I wanted (ghost notes on the kick my friends). anyways, hope you like this one.

	Cool I overuse the word cool. Here it's actually fitting. I dig the sad vibe and that melody is dreamy. Actually it kind of sits on the fence between dreamy and nightmarish which is great. yeah, I was definitely thinking sparse when I started this one. my last band was a 3 piece and when we wanted to change up the instrumentation, we had to either stop playing something or get creative (matchbooks jammed into organ keys, etc...), and I wanted to write something that could actually b e played live. so you get this. thanks man.

yeah, I programmed these with love. supposed to sound like a sloppy indie rock drummer. almost easier to just program drums than use loops at this point; by the time I dig through loops to find something that I like and then chop it apart to make it fit, I can already have a drum track done. but they're still fun to torture though. thanks man, glad you liked.

haha
yeah, these were recorded in my work bathroom. I set my laptop on top of a giant pile of medical supplies, plugged in my ear buds and did these in about 10 minutes. i did 2 tracks of each (lead and harmony). was planning on editing together the best parts, and ended up just using the first takes. i actually do a lot of recording at work in the spare moments, but it's usually drums or synth parts. thanks man, MUCH appreciated.

	thanks dave glad you approve. funny, I wasn't so sure about the synth line at first, but now it's growing on me. almost sounded like it belonged on a gangsta rap track, so I automated the LFO to make it sound cheesier. thanks man. 	Its Over I've always felt a little brit flavor in your song writing Michael. The stripped back mix and plaintive vocals work well. My only (teeny weensy) nit is the farfisa organ sound. That being said and reading some of the other comments, it may be the key ingredient that gives it that "O & O" feel. Exceptional songcraft in any event. oh there is a lot of anglophile tendencies to my writing, as much as I try to disguise it. it's funny, I think my favorite part of the tune is that cheesy organ sound (it's the synth part I don't know about). I was actually thinking I might write my next few songs all with this instrumentation so that it would be like forming a band with myself ("all we have is drums, bass, organ and a synth"). anyways, I guess it's interesting how we're all attracted to different things. glad you liked it overall. and why did the Zombies spell "Odessey" that way?

Regardless I love your handling of this song. Gonna check out some more of what you have submitted.
Interestingly, the few submissions I have made are thought of as "happy" yet the melancholy sound you brings resonates with me. I haven't submitted my "sadder" songs yet because they are too close to my soul and I somehow feel vulnerable. There aren't many old school "punks" with a great sense of melody like yours..

Simple is best...
just the right amount of instrumentation to carry this. I hear a little of the Kinks as you mention in the high harmonies/style but prolly only 'cos you mentioned it .. I too hear the kinda Nirvana (and The Eels) in the melancholy and tempo and chords .. like Stevel mentioned. Influences aside, the vocals are as usual top notch.. I would have been tempted to add some high bells/glockenspiel (Eels style) and strings like cellos... but that prolly just me. Lyrics are good too and emotive.
