alackbass: electric & acoustic guitars, electric bass
Sigmund: lead & rhythm guitars
kevmikwa: drums, percussion, & artwork
I wrote the music for this several weeks ago. It started with the guitar riff in the chorus, which was followed by chord changes for the verses and bridge. I recorded two electric guitar tracks, two acoustic guitar tracks, and the bass to a drum loop then arranged it into song form. I then sent it off to Gaylen for him to write a vocal melody and lyrics. It was sent to him on a Saturday. Later that same day he sent back a first take.
We now had a song and set about putting together an arrangement. So we asked Mike and Sigmund to join us in an Internet band project. Mike contributed excellent drum and percussion tracks while Sigmund delivered screaming lead guitar parts and the heavy rhythm guitar tracks that enter the arrangement after the bridge. Those two guys never fail to deliver the goods and as always it was a privilege to work with them.
Mixing was truly a group project. I originally had the home DAW but can’t take credit for the mix. Gaylen contributed several different vocal sub-mixes until he arrived at the final version. Mike contributed a fully mixed drum sub-mix and an auxiliary percussion sub-mix. Meanwhile Sigmund placed both rhythm guitar and lead guitar sub-mixes in the DropBox.
As we approached the final mixing stage I was finding it difficult to find an appropriate place in the stereo field for Sigmund’s parts. After just a few emails it was clear Sigmund needed to retain control of his individual tracks in order to get the mix right. So I gave him a sub-mix of my guitars, bass, and all of Mike’s tracks. Sigmund imported that and a dry sub-mix of Gayen’s vocals into his DAW. He then mixed those two sub mixes and his individual track. The final touch was the mastering, which Sigmund did with Ozone.

Twice Andrew has has come to me with a lyrical theme in mind and set me free on a great sound bed. Both times the results thrilled me. Maybe I should defer to him. These guys are all getting more and more professional/ ocd. I can't wait till the next.

Last summer I heard Gaylen's "Unraveled", and I was struck with the collab bug! I contacted Andrew and begged him to be in the next one - he kindly obliged. Since then I have done several collabs (and I am having a total blast!) - this is my first opportunity to work with Gaylen, Andrew and Mike together and let me tell you it has been an amazing experience, working with such a talented group of guys. Thank you guys, it has been a real privilege!

well i didn't get firsties, but i don't mind being behind char!! I LOVE THIS SONG - it's been so fun to be a fly on the wall listening as it has developed and gotten bigger and cooler and more astounding with each iteration. wonderful job to all - gaylen's voice KILLS, as does sig's guitars, andrew's guitars and of course mike's fabulous percussion. and andrew - wonderful job putting it all together. congrats to some of my favorite people!
