Goldberg Variations (J.S. Bach)

Description
Johann Sebastian Bach (as Drakonis said: "The Master of Loops") had used every new kind of keyboard he could find.
What would he like to use in our time?

The Goldberg Variations are a wonderful sample for what you can develop from one bass line.
If you want to hear a good piano version, try the Simone Dinnerstein record. If I cannot sleep, I'll take this as my medicine...

In my interpretation of this gem, I just tried to capture the calm eternal space in the wonderful aria.

Thanks to Drakonis, his "A Round and Bach Again" files gave me the inspiration to try this.

Hello again, I'm back in town...;-)

Happy New Year !

Spacious
I saw a movie recently where the main character was a music professor, and she advised a student to "listen for the spaces between the notes." Your piece here does a wonderful job of doing just that! It has a certain spaciousness that lends more beauty to the individual notes.

Lost in Space
What a nice quote. "Listen for the space between the notes."
Thank you for your very appreciated comment! "Space is all about luxury"...
Now i will have a look ( an ear...) for your music.

Greetings from Lower Saxony,

Bernd

Dreamy but expressive.
Goldberg from a different perspective. It definitely does bring out the etherial space within. Bach is amazing, and your performance does him justice. Thanks for the download.

Murray Perahia
It is his piano recording of the Goldberg Variations that I have on CD, and it is one of those complicated/simple pieces, that just grows on you more and more. And I listened to a University lecture where the teacher disassembled the variations and explained the similarities and relationships between the grid of 32 variations, so mathematical, but so fluid in its final presentation that most people who listen to the whole set just think "yup, that is pretty neat."

Your presentation of the aria here is very well done, slow and deliberate, almost a processional. An interesting voice-choice... you've chosen something between a harpsichord and a celesta, with a tiny hint of Moog... very tasteful melting of centuries. I like it! And of course, sweetly performed... what a nice New Years treat, thank you!

ttfn,
Drakonis

Murray Perahia
He is a genius, no question. And played a very nice version of the Goldberg Variations.
In my version the main voice is based on the GarageBand "Space Harpsichord", but I spent some time to find the right settings... I've added a bass with parts from the left hand to have a stronger basis.
BTW: I disliked the Goldberg Variations first. But on second try, I got this wonderful "What-a-wonderful-miracle-is-this-Universe" feeling, which Bach had captured in this Aria.
As Bach said: "The art is to omit!"
Thank you for your comment, very appreciated!

Hi Bernd.....
A very happy New Year to you and your family.

This piece is simply wonderful. I love everything Bach and this is a great addition to my collection.

The instruments chosen and the dynamics of the piece fit together so well.

I hope to be hearing more of your work through 2011.

Thank you for introducing me to Simone Dinnerstein. I had never heard of her.

Take care.

Paul

Simone Dinnerstein
I found her on iTunes and was immediately a fan of her virtuous play. Her playing sounds so light and easy...
Thank you for your kind comment!
Have a wonderful year, too!

Bernd

Yup, this IS pretty neat
Can't say I have this piece fresh in mind in any other version, but I like this slightly christmassy voiced version. Very well performed as far as I can judge...

Welcome back, Bernd, and hope all is well for 2011!

Thank you
The best thing that can happen, is if there is someone listening and enjoying music, which is not his typical style.
That is one of the wonderful things of this community: "To ahve a look over the plates edge", as we say in Germany.
So thank you for listening and leaving such a nice comment.

I will have a look at your music, soon...

Bernd

Hmmm
I'd say Bach would be using Garageband, hehe. This is very lovely indeed. I believe this is my first time listening to you, and a wonderful one it was. Great stuff!
