Lyrics
Sometimes, there are glimpses of
Mere glimpses
Sometimes, there are glimpses of
Mere glimpses

It could be
The curl in your hair

It could be
The shape of your hands
With the ring
On your finger

Or it could be
The smell of your clothes
Bounce and swim
Through the tides

Or it could be
The rappity-tap of telephone cords
A swamp
With many pillows

Oh, we were just
Innocent faces
With innocent minds

Oh, we were just
Under false tenses
With false reprieve

Oh, we were just
Wrapped up in laces
With smiles and sharp cries

Oh, we were just
Small and dependant
With wide, open eyes

Sometimes, there are glimpses of
Mere glimpses
Sometimes, there are glimpses of
Mere glimpses

levels
I notice that the overall level of this song is rather low once I exported it to iTunes and uploaded it here. Any ideas about how to get a better overall volume?

levels
uncheck normalize in Advanced dialog. Save to disk on desktop instead of share to iTunes. Try that.

Dear awigze,
Thank you for your ideas about the levels! I have tried it, but it still seems to be the same as when I export the iTunes. Maybe the levels are ok? What do you think?

Nice one Laurie
Haven't seen you around here for some time - welcome back! This is nicely done - love the sax, and the words evoke a feeling rather than a visual, which is quite difficult to pull off.
I hope things go well for you and your mum in the new year.
Karlsruhe? Have you had a move?
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

I enjoyed recording sax for the first time one this one and it's great to hear that is come off alright. I noticed that you have some new cd's and recorded songs for sale - well done! I am thrilled for you:) It's nice to hear that the emotions come across well... thanks again.

Sentimental touch
A very sweet and enjoyably written/sung/played song... so nice to hear you back around. The wistful nature of this song comes through, and the vague lyrics keep me engaged and thoughtful long after the song is finished (a good thing!) Your singing is lovely, the sax work is great (is that you playing too?) and the overall mix/balance is great.

So, as for overall volume of the final MP3, there is likely some step we are missing in your process in order to help.

1. How exactly do you listen to the music in GarageBand versus iTunes? The same way (i.e., headphones both times to insure volume is about the same?)
2. How do you export the file from GarageBand? Uncompressed (as an AIFF file and then use iTunes to compress to MP3) or compressed (letting GarageBand compress to MP3)? If you are doing this one way, have you tried doing it the other way? Personally lately, I always have GarageBand compress the MP3 for me (to 192 KBps) and listen in iTunes, and it is the same level.
3. There are some settings hidden in BOTH GarageBand (depending on which version you have) and iTunes that can mess with the real or perceived volume level and sound quality of the sound file. In GarageBand's Preferences dialog, under the "ADVANCED" tab, there is an "Auto-Normalize" checkbox... make sure that is OFF. If it is on, and you have even one single loud pop in the recording, it will reduce the overall volume of the song during EXPORT (but not during GB playback). In iTunes preferences, "PLAYBACK" tab, make sure the "Sound Enhancer" (which changes the bass/treble on your songs during playback) and "Sound Check" (which adjusts sound volume on each song) are OFF, so you hear exactly what you created.
4. GarageBand's master volume meters are a little conservative, and will go into the RED a little early... so I try to boost the sound to ride in the yellow a lot, and just touch the red here and there... and that seems to work OK.

Hope these ideas help!

ttfn,
Drakonis

Thank you for your comments, Karen. It's reassuring to hear that other children of parents who are ill find it hard to remember them clearly when they were healthy. It has made me feel guilty for a long time! I am happy that you enjoyed the song. As I mentioned on the chat, it's me on the sax. All the best.

Thank you very much for your comments. I am happy to hear that you enjoyed the overall feel and production. It's my first time to record the sax, so it's great to hear that it works alright. I can try any style - bossa nova included:) I'm hoping to re-work Trust, which I posted awhile back. Let's hope that weI can post it soon... or one of the other 20 half-finished songs that my partner and I have! All the best, Laurie
