Description
This is a song i wrote recently about the strange divergence between where we want to go and where we end up going! As such, i thought it might be appropriate for this time of year, when we like to map out the months ahead, and make resolutions about our behaviour (very few of which last more than a few days!)

The way of peace and love that Christmas exemplifies, though the best road, is actually an impossible one (at least for me!), and therefore, not really a road at all in the sense that it is not used to convey anything! Nevertheless, even with foreknowledge of failure, we step out bravely again, full of hope, knowing that the one who points the good way is always with us.

Lyrics

No Road

Mad am i, where there is no road,
To walk this way today,
Not far, my soul,
But as far as i may,
Though there was never a way,

To never my love, betray.

Soon the old ways, that grieved me before,
Will lead me to suffer again,
How far, my soul,
And how much of pain,
Out on the well-trodden plain,

As I fail my love, again.

Foolish am i, for experience shows,
That i never can walk with thee,
But onwards, my soul,
Though all things agree,
That no human road can there be

For still my love waits, for me,
Still my love waits for me,
Still my love waits for me.

Thanks, Char!
Was a bit worried about whether this one would go down too well, as you would fear for a vulnerable, dear child, perhaps, in a cynical world, but as usual, MacJammers find warmth and sincerity in something and encourage and honour it, despite technical shortcomings. What a great site this is!

Encouraged and greatly heartened.

Thank you!

Hi, Karen!
Thanks for the great comment and i am so glad you enjoyed it.

Sometimes i think i go out on a limb with my songwriting, but i'm no crazier than most people on this site, that's plain! ;-)

Cheers

Thank you, Matt!
Thanks for listening and taking the trouble to give evidence!

Really pleased that it meant something to you. Thought it might be a bit dark, though it is actually a positive song, i think, overall, and after all, it is the middle of winter, isn't it?

Cheers

A charming tune
with some added surprising instrumental and vocal additions.

Apart from being a nice tune you have a couple of minor distractions. If you were using the amp simulation or the overdrive to boost the guitar, it left a trace hum as though it may have been a tape dub from a cassette. I have had that problem with my little tune Lady of ♥. The intonation projection of you voice is sequel to the guitar playing, good, but I feel you need to articulate with the enunciation of the words. Your good, but you can be better. I feel also, you are better than what you think you are. Oh, I liked the accompaniment. You could have added that to the ending as well.

I like the melody as it has a noteworthy classical structure to it and I found myself mumming it as I was writing this critique. I hope you will have a proliferous musical year.

Great Feedback!
Thanks so much for your thoughts.

The guitar is semi-acoustic and just plugged straight into my little mixer without any effects added. Sometimes i think it picks up a bit too much noise when i'm picking the strings. It's possible the hum could be from the vocal track, which is delivered via an internal mic, not a proper vocal one?

i agree that the vocals could be improved in one or two places. i have found vocals to be a strange animal, and difficult to reproduce from one moment to another. Generally, not being trained or having a very good ear, i let minor mistakes be if the overall effect is at least sincere and reasonably well articulated. Needs work!

On the melody, i am very pleased that you think it quite strong. That is the most difficult thing of all to achieve, i think?

Thanks for the advice and encouragement. Gold dust.

A great New Year to yourself, too.

Cheers

a wordsmith you are :-)
This is beautiful campfire music , something like Simon and Garfunkel.
Played with feeling and draws the listener in .
Well done .
Thanks for your comment on the melody in A .
I hope to hear more from you in the future .
I am not a word man that's why I can only do the instrumental thing. The woodwinds were lovely too btw and such an usual treat to the ear.
Well done again.

Thanks, Cormac
Comes of writing too many dodgy poems over the years, i think!

Glad you got something from it. To be mentioned in the same breath as Simon and Garfunkel is very nice indeed! Now there's people who can really write!

Cheers

Thanks, Yves!
Glad you like the arrangement; i always have to go through it in a painstaking way and then play it pretty conscientiously too, to get anything like a nice setting to come out. i envy the many people on this site that have enough talent to just turn on the mic and let it rip!

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.

Cheers

Simple always has the best impact. If the melody and playing are strong enough to hold up on their own . This does good job enjoyed it

Vocal pitch against some arps is challenging, I like a challenge too.
This arrangement is entertaining with the harmonies and lilt...

love the art work
Where is the artwork from? It's striking and fits this song well. I agree that it's hard to know which way to go... I like the feeling of the solo in the middle. Well done.

Artwork
Hi Laura! The artwork is actually a picture that i took with my phone while out walking in the countryside near my home just before Christmas. Amazing gadgets aren't they? And the best camera i've ever had!

i could send You the higher res version if you like, although i don't know if you can attach anything with the mailing service here?

Cheers for the comment. Glad you liked it.
