Description

It seems there are a lot of "men (and women) overboard" these days. I really hope that 2011 is a lot better for those who, through no fault of their own, have found themselves in a bad situation after the GFC (that's the "Global Financial Crisis").

This is about an "everyman" who finds himself out of work, out of cash and out of luck - not an unfamiliar story these days - and is puzzled what it might have been that caused him to get into this situation.

All tracks by me - piano and drums are pencilled midi.

GFC?
Awesome track, with fantastic performances, and equally impressive pencilling! As always, your production is superb. But GFC? To what does this refer, I wondered...

So I Googled it, and I found this, which not only explains it, it also explains why I had not heard of the term, but you have, which I found interesting; it's from a blog by Ross Dawson, apparently you countryman:

If you Google “GFC” in Australia the #3 result is a newspaper story, "Tough week ends in talk of ‘GFC’," dated from October last year, with four of the top 10 results referring to the planet’s economic woes, including three newspaper headlines.

If you Google “GFC” in the US, aside from a #5 entry from Wikipedia which includes various acronyms including the contemporary one, the first entry which refers to GFC in this way is at #45.

So are Australians particularly acronym-crazy? Are we in the vanguard of what will be a global trend to summarize the state of the world as GFC?

Of course the very best thing about GFC is that it is an easy explanation for everything, in three easy letters. It was all getting very complicated for a while. Now it’s simple again – yay!

"GFC" must be an Australian thing then - I just assumed it was a world wide abbreviation. I think acronyms are useful when (as was the case with the GFC) the full phrase was being repeated over and over. Think of us as being economical with our use of syllables. At first I thought it must be another fast food chain :) Luckily (for us) we seem to have been much less effected by global financial events than most of the rest of the world.

Thanks for the comments - much appreciated.

I probably should explain how I do the piano and drums parts - "pencil" may give the wrong impression, although I certainly spend a lot of time using the midi pencil to get the final results. With nearly all my midi parts I start with a midi loop (or three) to get the general feel of what I'm wanting to play. I then go in with the pencil and change the various parts of the loop around until they are what I want before spreading the revised loop across the other verses. The chorus drum loop here is more significantly modified. Once I have the single loops modified and spread across the song, I join the loops into a single region and then go through - 2 or 4 bars at a time - and modify the individual parts of the kit separately (removing hits, shifting beats, swapping sounds). I usually start with the kick, then the snare etc until the whole song is how I want it. This process can go on for a very long while. I sometimes then split the kit into 5 tracks, with a separate track for the kick, the snare, toms, hihats and cymbals - this makes it easier to sort EQ, compression and reverb. I didn't do this on this song as it sounded fine (and it's yet another level of difficulty).
The piano track was done in a similar way - a single loop that was near what I wanted to play (this is how I was able to get the left hand sorted) modified extensively (changing pitch, removing beats and adjusting timing) before spreading it across the track. Then, "micromanaging time" with the trusty midi pencil - varying the parts so that it didn't sound like a loop, and had the variety to make it seem like a real player.

I like doing this stuff, which is lucky because it can take a lot of time.

As I explain in other replies on the page, I didn't pencil FROM SCRATCH, but I did pencil in quite significant variations on a base midi loop which then got well and truly rejigged when spread through the song. The band version will be different (an extra 2 verses and a solo section in C), but should work out well once we get it better rehearsed.
Likewise for 2011 to you John - I hope we can work together some more this year.

Ditto on the comments about the pencilling in the midi. Never would have known. That's one technique I gotta practice, have to watch some YouTube lessons on that one. I agree with Alackbass That this is your best vocal to date I think. Really strong and consistent. Your phrasing is loose and funky with spirit. The instrumentation is totally fun. The lyrics are killer, really killer, particularly the chorus. Really well done Neil. Total D/L!

great performance Neil and I love everything on this, guitars, drums and this is tight. I know when I like a really good song and this certainly is, everything is perfect to my ears. The tone on your Tele sounds great and I love the way you play the rhythm, sliding notes into the chords. Great arrangement and mix I also have to say your vocals are the best I've heard from you.

A Song of the Times
I think the lines "I'm a man overboard/for all the wrong reasons" is a perfect way to encapsulate the global financial cluster f@$k of the last several years. I see people every day, jobless through no fault of their own, who are desperate to find any kind of work. A teacher with a Master's degree who is lucky to find a part-time job restock shelves at the dollar store. Or people who have been out of work so long they've just given up.

Sadly, many of these people will be "overboard" for the rest of their lives. If you're cast adrift too long, no one seems to be willing to reel you in.

A great song all around, Neil. Very true to our times.

What a rocker
Loved the music bed especially the accent of the saloon style piano. Vocals are vintage Porter and I'm really digging the axes and wishing well comparisons. I do have to say that a lot of people around here have been losing there jobs due to big corporate failures. Some from jobs they've had for over a decade. It just might be easier for them to collect help rather than opt for a large cut in pay. Mght as well hang on to a gleam of hope and toss a coin in that fountain from time to time. Enjoyed!

I'm impressed with the piano....
It really adds to the rocking...Very hard to believe that it's pencilled in...

The arrangement is really full and natural. It doesn't sound like it's one overdubbed bit stacked on another. It sounds like people playing, keeping it rocking while staying out of each others' way.

I like the drum fills around 'I'm a man overboard for all the wrong reasons.' Very drummerly penciling there...

I like blend of grit and smooth in the lead guitar tone, and I like the solo itself very much...

I like the subject matter, too. Having just gotten through a very rough year, I really relate to the feelings that go along with doing all the right things and having the ground shift under your feet regardless...

See my explanation above for the midi details - one thing I didn't mention up there is that sometimes I'll do a piano loop myself by "playing along" as if I knew how to play - hitting three (random) notes per hand in the timing I want, then going back and shifting the notes into the pitches required for the chord. It doesn't always work, but is good for organ parts in particular.

We're doing a slightly different version of this live as a 3-piece, and it's coming along well. Also started work on 3-piece versions of Take Me To Heart, Things Must Change and Spinnin' - playing guitar in a 3-piece .... now that's a challenge!

I love your stuff and this is an amazingly well put together solid gold song, great lyrics, making a profound statement with a solid top notch hook, delivered with straight on the money vocals, I've listened to this several times but wanted to wait till I had the headphones on, dude, the piano and guitar are so in the pocket, and the drum track is perfect, the bass line is sweet, great job on that piano, I would never know! You really are the king of the pencil tool. I understand about starting from a loop baseline, but the things you do with them is just so masterful.

I know I've made this comment on a couple of your tunes, but you sure don't need any drumming help anymore and that makes me sad (as a former "bandmate"). Guess I just gotta make sure you don't start teaching Andrew your tricks of the pencil-drum trade!

I was also intrigued to hear about your piano method (in your reply to Ed Hannifin). I actually was working with something along those lines for guitar. I have a Yamaha EZ-AG: it's a cheesy guitar trainer that has strings and a MIDI out. Like you and the piano, I'll strum it with the feel I like and it records the open strings as MIDI notes which I then go in and move around to the chords I need.

Needless to say, the entirety of the song is spot on: everything in just the right spot (in stereo field and frequency spectrum), well produced, mixed and mastered, great guitar and bass tones, excellent vocal (manic in spots), and I like your simple solo.

I usually try to find a nit to pick in my comments, but on this one, you've got me fairly well stumped. I would have objected to your equal-velocity 16th-note kicks at 3:22+, but in reality that just means that your "drummer" has a better, more consistent right foot than mine - it's still realistic.

You know how to put together a rock and roll song, my man. The instrumentals match the spirit of the song and the song itself is just twisty enough not to be predictable, but still leave us comfortable that its rock. I think your piano and drums are pretty impressive for midi work. The vocal performance does the job too. I get the feeling of a three day beard, wine breath and the attitude that suits it on this number. Great job.

You inspire me to eschew (most of) the FX and plug in a live amp. Dig the clean keys and guitars playing the kind of rock that got me stomping my feet as a kid. My guitar ear digs the sawblade chord strums/tone as well as the sweet open string/harmonic touches. You rock, old man! (I kid -- I may be older than you!)
