Whatever We Say

Description
A news item about how Canadian lakes can be "reclassified" into toxic waste dumps prompted this little eco-folk protest song. Let me know if I should lose the piano part, I wasn't too sure about it. I like the sound of acoustic guitar with piano but my piano skills are a bit rough. also not sure if the piano sound is any good.. I think it came with garageband.

Lyrics
northern waters blue
it's just like a postcard
but what's it mean to you
except some place for your vacation...

its far from where you live
so what's with all the worry?
nowhere near your street
it's just one more remote location

you thought a lake was a lake
but i'm afraid you're mistaken
we turned it into a dump
so now i'll show you what's in a name
it's whatever we say

you get whatever you want
and we know what you need now
stop and think, you know
this stuff has got to come from somewhere

all god's creatures were made to share
up here you find them anywhere
and whether they walk, swim or crawl,
must be a place for em all

you thought a lake was a lake
but what if we say it ain't
we turned it into a dump
for all our rocks and poison sludge
and all our dark satanic muck
so now i'll tell you what's in a name
it's whatever we say

Wow
you got some cowbell in this one I see. Coulda used a little more cowbell though. I got a fever... and the only cure is more cowbell.

I think the piano was tastefully done and worked well with the guitar. Everything solid on this one. I like the message too. It is sad what we are doing to our world in the name of industry and the almighty dollar.

cowbell
I would have cowbell in every single song if I didn't exercise some restraint.
It's my favourite instrument dammit!
I should get a real one though...

subect matter
great theme - should be used more often -
a maverick's maverick; travelling this avenue
different and pleasant, yet ground untrod.
So I can't mention Joe Jackson in light of this
write-up.
I love this sound.
It is audio ginger.
profound

joe jackson duets with malkmus
this is a cool departure from your usual garage hijinks. i like the piano. 'whether they walk, swim or crawl, must be a place for them all' is the grooviest enviro-rock lyric of all time. i can see fringe and bell bottom clad teenagers holding hands across the horizon like the old UNICEF ads, singing this tune.

also, there's cowbell.

that was a coke ad wasn't it? the cowbell was originally intended to be subliminal but I turned it up a bit.
there is a cowbell track on all my songs, it's just a matter of how loud it's turned up.
I guess I should have been a dairy farmer.

Solid!
Keys are fine, to my ears anyway... Parts of the melody/progression is oddly familiar, not a problem, plenty of diversity here. Very nicely accomplished... your production is always spot on!

we spent new year's eve
at a family event at a winter park outside in syracuse, NY on the shore of Oneida Lake which I understand is one of the most toxic lakes in the world, they say it has 40 feet of chemicals on the bottom, crazy world, this song is a great protest song, very well done, love the Steely Dan feel, great job!

came to this through the forum. yes....it's a great track....i love retro sixties-sounding protest songs. the piano grooves nicely...don't be down on yourself...it earns its place. love the lead and harmony vocal throughout. great choice.

Keep the piano...
...it's what drew me in. The vocal line sounds a bit distorted to my ear though - perhaps if you ever remix you could try and lessen the EQ at the top end and draw up the low-mids? Great lyric - a message that should be heard.

Just Like A Postcard
Nice combination of sounds, dude. The piano and strumming guitar work wonderfully with the cowbell. I thought you were just a banjo player, but apparently you went to art school and did some on campus protests too.

The Rothko image works perfectly with the song.

Another tune dumped into my pristine iPod from the bowels of the Great White North or something.

Seriously, this is good stuff bro.

Hey,
I think it sounds fine. I did not think the piano was distraction, but it filled in the rhythm and its a fine lead section too. Great job. I think the sound of the piano is OK too. I would never have questioned it.

You said it!
I like the lyrics - you obviously have something to say. The guitar is beautifully clean. I'm OK with the piano - wish I had keyboard skills to that level! Perhaps the vocal could be further forward, given the power of the words, but I liked listening to it - thanks for sharing it!
Daugrin said 699 days ago (June 22nd, 2011)
Hey 67!
Another eco-blast? Maybe there was another way to engage the ideas? Piano works fine for me... recalls a Fagan/Becker tune to my ears, the hook gets a bit overworked, the production is great as usual, thanks for sharing your work with us.
