Description

I recently returned from a 13 day trip filming a project for Accenture about their mentoring programs within challenged communities around the world. We shot in Houston, Texas - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Cape Town, South Africa - and Bangalore, India. Besides a point and shoot camera - I also carried my Zoom H2 digital recorder which I only managed to use in India. Recording out my hotel window in the evening and and before dawn - driving around town - and at the airport in Mumbai.
While I was away Bryn aka particledots dropped a time-stretched kalimba recording in the apod box and it seemed the perfect basis for this recording. Besides the field recordings I also added Tanpura Devi and Tabla Devi (both iPhone apps).
I'm still pretty jet lagged and have no idea how I'll feel about this track later - but for now it's something to do to extend the experience. Here is a link to a flickr stream of photos taken in Bangalore that you may play as a slide show to accompany the music - or not. Most shots were on the fly and many from the hip - as I was there to do a job with no "free" time - so it's an uneven collection.

Well, I know how I feel about the track. First, it's a very cool idea to have a slideshow to accompany this sound tapestry. Watching AND listening right now. Second, the music is haunting and the live soundtrack provides a sense of atmosphere and place. The whole thing makes me feel like the world is a very very big place, and I live in a tiny little corner. Just gorgeous.

Kalimba Stretch
I'm not sure why, but I'm far more interested in the samples knowing you were experiencing them firsthand, rather than being downloaded. After two minutes or so I took you up on the flickr offer and I'm glad I did. When I was just listening to the track my mind was kind of stuck with the image of deep poverty that my sister always tells me about (although she spends most of her time in Mumbai). But you photos told a more rounded version. Both extremes and everything in between. And a No Sleep Till *Brooklyn shirt, too. At least I'm left to assume it was Brooklyn.

No seriously tho' this is very intersting....not particularly tuneful I think you will concede but a very good tone and sound pastiche giving a very.....uuurm cosmopolitan and yet ancient feel.
