When I saw this challenge show up in the forums I jumped at it without thinking. I love this side of the console, so to speak and this was more fun than I ever could have imagined. While it wasn't a "typical" producers experience in that we got to start from scratch, it was closer than I have ever been before. I actually want to start approaching artists and offering my services as a producer. I know I know… don't quit my day job.
Bryn is easily one of the coolest people I have met at MJ to date. His talent goes without saying. I was very very nervous when I found out I was to produce one of his songs. That nervousness only lasted as long as it took for us to have our first exchange of ideas. He gave me a short list of songs to select from, and I went through his catalogue on my own quest. In the aforementioned short list was a song called Home Sweet Home When I saw it was with Lennon 714 and michael2 and Char I thought to myself that this would be like producing a super group!! It eventually won out, but honestly, it was one of the hardest decisions I have had to make in a long time. Bryn is the kind of artist I like and respect tremendously and getting to know him just deepened it for me. Honestly I don't understand some of his work BUT I know I like it all. This was a one of my most favourite and memorable learning experiences with music to date. In retrospect I wish I might have chosen something more eclectic of his to produce for the challenge of it. I chose Home Sweet Home because it was indicative of the music of an artist I would approach to "produce". It truly is a great song and the sincerity with which Bryn delivered that vocal was another reason why I chose it. I hope I haven't taken away from the song, much of the original is no longer there. I am sure you will tell me what you think as you always have MJ and thats why I love it here. I only have to ask for your opinion and I will get it.
I want to shout out to Ed Wemmerus aka sloparts he was my other set of ears and has become one of my closest friends over the last year. His opinion is all over this version of Home Sweet Home. I asked for his help because of something I heard Jim Dickinson say in the interview Taylor Morgan posted in the Producers Challenge forum topic. Dickinson is quoting another producer "you never know who is going to produce the song, it might be the guy that brings the coffee" I understood it immediately, and it resonates with me to date. I actually saw the interview about 2 years ago and it made me wonder if I could "produce". I guess we'll see.
I forgot to mention... and it's almost 24 hours later..... Bryn was a huge influence on how I put this together and at one point I was wondering (jokingly) if maybe I was the one being produced, and I guess that it was to some extent. It should be expected when working with such a talented artist/producer like Bryn. He made it very easy to try new things with the song and honestly it wouldn't sound this way if he hadn't gently nudged me in a couple directions.

It has been a great pleasure working with Guy on this song
Things I particularly love about Guy’s brilliant work include
The acoustic guitars – guy got them to sound much better than I did although in my original I almost took off the chorus/flange effect. Guy has showed me that indeed I should have.
The vocals – I can hardly believe that’s me and that these are the from the same vocal performance I used in my original. I tend to use a lot of reverb not only on my own vocals but other peoples – Guy has pulled right back on the reverb compared to me and made me sound very ‘present’. I also love the creative use of panning that Guy has bought into play here. Eric Van Ausdel’s other worldly backing vocals are also used to great effect here….brilliantly blended and balanced by Guy.
The new instrumental parts – the moody keyboards and the mellotron-like strings…prefect
The drums – Guy has taken a totally different approach with the drum track than I did – I like both approaches (mine and his) and I am glad that Guy took the time and effort to make the drums sound like this
The bass part – Guy has emphazised and utilized the bass track in a much different and maybe better way than I did originally
The arrangement – Guy was very sensitive and empathetic to my comments and suggestions about the arrangement and it is because of this great collaborative effort that we were able to make the changes we did. However, I must stress that Guy is the one who made the magic happen here – his role as a producer came to the fore in the back and forth process as the mix evolved
I have to say it was a very unusual position for me to be in – not only to have someone produce one of my songs, but to produce a song which already existed. And then to do such a fantastic job with it
I hope to work with Guy again in the future – maybe on a song from scratch, maybe he will allow me to send one of his new songs into space…

This has been a great challenge (thanks Jack) and I think that both Guy and I have learned a lot from it

Home Sweet Home by particledots
Where I'm living now don't make no sense to me
Where I'm living now don't feel like home to me
Home Sweet Home
Home Sweet Home
Where is my home
Where is my life
Where is my home
Where is my life
You couldn't get me to live here
If I didn't live here now
Where I'm living now don't make no sense to me
Where I'm living now don't feel like home to me
Home Sweet Home
Home Sweet Home
Where is my home
Where is my life
Where is my home
Where is my life
You couldn't get me to live here
If I didn't live here now
