Description
Congratulations to Tobin Mueller. He was the winner in a contest to rename this piece (it was originally titled "Two Ninety-Eight"). Tobin actually suggested another title, "Preambling to the Groove," but in his comments he said the tune reminded him of dancing. In his entry Tobin wrote, "The beginning reminded me of light rain on the roof, watching out the window with happy memories of previous moments dancing." So, from that, the song is now renamed "Previous Moments Dancing." Thanks to all who entered. Their comments are listed below. The prize money goes to Tobin. Consolation prizes will also be awarded to Cameron and Chikoppi, close runners up. All the checks are, well, in the mail. Somebody's mail. Somewhere. Previous mail. http://www.macjams.com/users.php?mode=profile&uid=7608

Nice Guitar Here
How about "Grumbling Off in a Funk" for a title ?
Does the original title come from "The Poodle Lecture"?

Nice Guitar Here
Thanks Mungo. The original title is really a marker--the piece was originally
sketched out in February 1998. 2/98. Lame, I know. Right now, you're in 1st
place in the race for a new title. Thanks again.

"The life beyond my borders"
This is a really ecclectic piece. The blues strain at the end was completely unexpected and I'm still not sure about how it affects the song as a whole. I like the harmonics and bends you worked throughout using the multiple guitars. This is an inventive ensemble piece for a travelling band of classically trained mariachis hailing from somewhere in the Mississippi delta! (7-7-8-7)

"The life beyond my borders"
Chikoppi, thank you. For listening. For imagining the actual musicians and
their origins, and for the suggested title, which has now taken a commanding
lead.

Herd of Guitars
Nice and mellow. A bit busy at times. Like a herd of wild
guitars getting ready to settle down for the night.

Eclectic Wandering
You are right, Adam, the piece does seem to wander, and even stumbles
somewhat at the end. Your title is under consideration...thanks for listening
and responding.

Preambling to the groove
Great journey. Nice layering. Love the variations you take
us thru. The beginning reminded me if light rain on the
roof, watching out the window with happy memories of
previous moments dancing. The use of out of tune strings
and what sound like in-process tuning, made me think of
the "Deconstructing the Moment" as a title. The sudden
change into a blues type funk groove 2/3s thru gave it a
different place, tho, and I can't quite describe the sense,
maybe "Preambling to the Groove"? Really nice
experiment.

Preambling to the groove
As always, Tobin, your comments are a pleasure to read. Your attention to
detail --in this case, the 'in-process tuning'--always surprises me. I will place
your official title suggestion (Preambling to the Groove) in the hopper, but I
have also pulled another possible title from your comments: "Happy
Memories of Previous Moments Dancing," or maybe just "Previous Moments
Dancing." Thanks again. And good luck in this contest.

nice instrumental
...but it needs a little something...perhaps a soft,
pitter-patter sort of percussion to drive it along...?
Even the last part could use some subtle
percussion... nice guitar work, though, as always...

Pensativa
This track had a thoughtful, reflective mood to it, as
though the main character in the story is pondering an
important decision he has to make.

Images from the past bubbles up to haunt him....he thinks
about how he would have responded to this same kind of
issue when younger.

But now he is older and can made a DIFFERENT decision.
More informed and mature, stemming from the many
experiences he has had.

The faster section of music towards the end indicates that
he DOES decide what to do. He feels reasonably content
with the important choice he has made.

"Pensativa" ("thoughtful" in Spanish) was a novel I had to
read in high school Spanish class. Although the subject
matter is somewhat different than described above, this
title came instantly to me as I was listening to this tune.

Pensativa
I guess one thing I love about instrumental music is what also makes it so
hard to come up with titles sometimes. Songs without words can have vastly
different meanings, depending on who is listening, the mood he is in, the
experiences she has had, etc. Titles can actually cause prejudice. But they are
handy things to have, especially on a site like this one with 5,000 tunes.

Your description of 2/98 was very vivid and I enjoyed the narrative. I also
think the title you offered--Pensativa--has a ring to it. Thanks for submitting
it. And thanks for listening to this piece that deserves a better name than it
now has.

comfort'

Nice
Nice, I like the taking chances with the music. Going for
interesting sounds.

Now as I am hearing, I am hearing some funky ness.

I think my favorite part is the harmonics working with the
cords.

I think what would be cool is the keep every thing you
have but before you go into the funky part try to puzzle
the new age sound into it then after the funky part go
back to the original. I know that that can be hard to do.
But I think it could give the listener a feeling that it ties
together with a purpose.

Let's say if it is something like there is light rain on the
roof and lets say that the funky part is the dancing. But in
order to conceptualize the two you want to offer a
transition in that way you can grasped the meanings of
both parts easier.

I know that is not always easy to do.

Some nice stuff in there. Especially the first part and the
blended haromonics
