When I saw the "Producers Challenge" in the forums I instantly thought "This is gonna be fun". I was right!

For the challenge I got paired with Davisamerica and he instantly sent me his audio files for the song "I thought I told you". After a few false upload starts, I finally received all the audio files and a comment from Davisamerica saying, this song was very important to him. Well this made me nervous to ask "could I have free rein with his song" but luckily he was very gracious and allowed me. Thanks for that :)

Producing the song, on the whole was a pleasant experience. To begin the song I just added Davisamerica's vocals to Ableton Live started up synthogy Ivory and started playing along with the vocals. An hour later I had the piano layer completed.

The next day I added a synth layer, created a beat and added a String layer, chopped up the vocals to extend track length and after several hours, I had a complete song. I then sat back really amazed at how quickly this song came together. I think it was down to the fact that I just followed Davisamerica's vocals, and everything seemed to flow from that. It was very satisfying process.

On day three I started the mixing process and this is when I came to my first stumbling block. I was struggling to get the piano in the mix *sigh*. Mixing piano seem to be the bane of my producing life lol. After this minor struggle I finally got to a stage I was happy with.

Hope you like the results! Thanks again to Davisamerica for letting me mess with his precious song to such an extent.

There is an
innocence to this somehow... perhaps it started out this way.... nice pick.

Nice Track...vocals cool
I like the vocals on this and tempo of this, the effects are very cool. Like singing through an amplified tube or something. As part of this contest, it sounds like the producer actually contributed a lot of the music...was this the intent?

It wasn't
My intent. It just happened that way due to the piano section. I played along with his vocals and the song evolved from that point.

Also thanks for great comment.

special.....
I had no idea what Andy would do here. The track was so simple but I always imagined such a complicated story. It is a love song but it is so many questions. It is also one of the few tunes I have done I was comfortable with. Andy (phunker) was done in days and captured the feel of my original intentions. I can not expressed how pleased I am with this. Phunker found the tune and brought it home. He is one hell of a Producer.... I would love to work with him again. Thanks my friend.

This is
exactly a 50 50 fusion of Jack and Andrew. Phunkamerica or Davisker. It is as if two people just discovered love. Thanks.

Wow...
This is different song all together. I think you did much better on mixing the piano than you thought. This is one cool song with the headphones on!! I listened to it the first time on the logitech speakers. I knew it was good then, but as I am typing this I am listening with the phones and all I can say is Wow. Nice Job!!
Peace

Glad
It sounds as good through you headphones as through your speakers. Was mostly produced with headphones except for final mix down, that's when I use my monitor speakers.

really haunting
touching. great job guys :-)
great vocals, great balanced production.
neither minimal nor overstated a perfect blend!
outstanding melody and the keyboards really enhance it.
melody is possibly the hardest thing to come up with and it's what makes great songs. after 30 years I still don't know how to do it.

this... is inspiring ;-)

Thank You
For your kind words. Glad you like the keyboard. The melody was fairly easy I just found the key of the song. Then the scale the song was in then, I messed around within the scale until I got a melody I was happy with.

Nice
Have to listen to this a few times more to get the lyrics, but a really smooth, well put together track. The odd section reminded me of Christmas, probably the bells!

The vocal effect was just a tad strange, i thought, for a love song, introducing a distancing to the feel of it, rather than going for intimacy?

Still a very good job and and an enjoyable listen.

Was a slight
Homage to Christmas with the bell synth I used. It was Christmas time when I made this :) But I did try to keep the Christmas feel minimal so it could be listened to any time of the year.

telephone voice
Was the vocal part like that from the beginning? I like the mix of those distant vocals and the more clear instruments.

The song has a wonderful flow, and it sounds great.

The
Telephone effect on Davisamerica voice came with audio file he sent. I think it enhanced the song personally. I just added reverb and used Autotune to sort out a few slight bad notes.

This is amazingly well done, to take a vocal track and build this? Incredible, it's a beautiful song and I can't imagine a better production, absolutely stunning!

Steady
The original version has a lovely, earnest quality that I enjoyed very much. This one is a different animal altogether! The words don't even seem to matter until the song is almost over: everything glitters and wafts along so nicely.
And this is the first PC song I've listened to where the producer has taken an active role in creating tracks. Amazing how much music can be found in the simplest of songs. Fine job the two of you!

Love,

MoM

Lovely
I never heard the original, so I'll surely check it out later. This has just a gentle vibe throughout, very calming. The vocals have a very interesting effect on them. Oh the whispered I love you at the end was a perfect touch. Awesome mix, great stuff!

Really wonderful reimagining
of Jack's tune. The keys and strings are beautifully rendered and I like the bells as well. I would have liked to have the vocals a little more present in the beginning - but I get the intent and can appreciate the mix here.

Nice work, guys!
The progression is seamless and eloquent, the mix is good. Personally, I would have brought the midrange of the piano down in the mix, and perhaps put an exciter on it to give it a "loud" feeling without it being quite so prominent in the mix. The vocals tend to dip under it now and again. But mixing is a ridiculously subjective thing anyway. Solid work, guys!

lol
I probably would of used a exciter and a bit, mid side and a gain shaper to clean up the middle for the piano if I was doing it now, amazing what you learn through practice :)
