Description
Natalie Scibetta (Strangedream) shared this with me a few months ago as a potential collab. She had two versions, one in English and one in Spanish. I'm sharing both versions of the lyrics. The Spanish version immediately resonated with me. I recently picked up a classical/electric guitar (a Godin) and love the way it sounds. I've jumped at every opportunity to use it and I feature it prominently in this song.
I had an opportunity a few years ago to visit Madrid, Spain and found it to be magical. I saw a flamenco show and immediately fell in love with the music, the dancing and the incredible percussive feel of the combination of taps, castanets and other hand percussion they used. I had something like that in mind for this song.
We contacted Scott about doing the drums. He loved the song and accepted enthusiastically. His work, as usual, is excellent. He played over my existing percussion tracks. I've done this with him the last few tunes we've worked on together. We both really like the effect. I panned my original drums to one side and Scott to the other.
Here is a rough breakdown of the tracks/instrumentation used:
Natalie Scibetta: Lyrics, Lead and Harmony Vocals.
Scott Fugate: Drums
Steve Stone: Nylon and Electric Guitars, Bass, Hammond B3, Congas, Maracas, Triangle, additional Drums.
Also, I'd like to thank Sigmund for lending me his ear in balancing the mix.
I'd like to dedicate my part in this to one of my guitar heroes, Carlos Santana. I had him in mind as I was doing the arrangement of this. Coincidentally, Francie (my wife) and I met him at the San Francisco airport about a month ago. We were on the same flight to Las Vegas. He was traveling with his wife, Cindy Blackman. My wife is pretty bold about going up and introducing herself to celebs. I tend to be on the shy side and let them have their privacy. Well, I'm really glad Francie met him. We got a great photo of him standing next to Francie at the airport (which I'm uploading as the picture for this song) and Francie got him to give her a giant autograph in magic marker across her purse (which has since been retired and is destined for framed existence on the wall). We saw his show (Supernatural) at the Hard Rock in Vegas and it was unbelievably great.
To top it off, last night we went to see Cindy Blackman, Jack Bruce, Vernon Reid and John Medeski in the Tony Williams Lifetime Tribute at Yoshi's in Oakland, Ca. Small world.. Carlos Santana was sitting at the table right behind us. Francie, of course, went over to talk to him again. He was extremely gracious, a really nice guy. At the end of the show Carlos got up on stage and joined everyone in a version of the Cream classic "Sunshine of your Love". It was fantastic. Especially in a small setting like that.
Anyway, I would like to thank Carlos for being who he is and giving me and many others some of the creative inspiration that drives us.

Lyrics
In Spanish:
Como saber lo que otros
quierian hacerme entender
la vida no es cuento de hades
soy parte el corazon quebrantado
Hey, eres mio?
Siempre, eternamente
Oh hey, no me mientes
me amas, es mas fuerte que esto
Mirame no me mientes
Y tus manos, no me robes
Quien eres, y quien sera
no es justo, juravas
no esta bien
como sera que calma?
Hey, eres mio?
Siempre, eternamente
Oh hey, no me mientes
me amas, es mas fuerte que esto
Como saber lo que otros
o tan mal que termino oh
La vida no es cuento de hadas
conozco el corazon quebrantados
Hey, eres mio
siempre, eternamente
Oh hey, no me mientes
me amas, es mas fuerte no es asi, no es asi?
In English:
How was I supposed to know
what everybody said was so?
And this life ain't no fairy tale
I'm going where the broken hearted go
Hey, aren't you mine?
Forever and longer...
Oh hey, don't you lie
you love me, and its stronger than this
Show me your face, don't lie to me
Show me your hands, don't steal from me
Who are you now? And who will you be?
This isn't fair, you swore to me
This isn't right, how could you be so cool?
Hey aren't you mine?
Forever and longer?
Hey, don't you lie,
you love me, and its stronger than this
How was I supposed to know
just how wrong that this would go?
And this life ain't no fairy tale
I know what the broken hearted know
Hey, aren't you mine?
Forever and longer?
Oh hey, don't you lie
you love me, and its stronger...isn't it? Isn't it?
Como saber lo que otros
quierian hacerme entender
