Description
Natalie Scibetta (Strangedream) shared this with me a few months ago as a potential collab. She had two versions, one in English and one in Spanish. I'm sharing both versions of the lyrics. The Spanish version immediately resonated with me. I recently picked up a classical/electric guitar (a Godin) and love the way it sounds. I've jumped at every opportunity to use it and I feature it prominently in this song.

I had an opportunity a few years ago to visit Madrid, Spain and found it to be magical. I saw a flamenco show and immediately fell in love with the music, the dancing and the incredible percussive feel of the combination of taps, castanets and other hand percussion they used. I had something like that in mind for this song.

We contacted Scott about doing the drums. He loved the song and accepted enthusiastically. His work, as usual, is excellent. He played over my existing percussion tracks. I've done this with him the last few tunes we've worked on together. We both really like the effect. I panned my original drums to one side and Scott to the other.

Here is a rough breakdown of the tracks/instrumentation used:

Natalie Scibetta: Lyrics, Lead and Harmony Vocals.
Scott Fugate: Drums
Steve Stone: Nylon and Electric Guitars, Bass, Hammond B3, Congas, Maracas, Triangle, additional Drums.

Also, I'd like to thank Sigmund for lending me his ear in balancing the mix.

I'd like to dedicate my part in this to one of my guitar heroes, Carlos Santana. I had him in mind as I was doing the arrangement of this. Coincidentally, Francie (my wife) and I met him at the San Francisco airport about a month ago. We were on the same flight to Las Vegas. He was traveling with his wife, Cindy Blackman. My wife is pretty bold about going up and introducing herself to celebs. I tend to be on the shy side and let them have their privacy. Well, I'm really glad Francie met him. We got a great photo of him standing next to Francie at the airport (which I'm uploading as the picture for this song) and Francie got him to give her a giant autograph in magic marker across her purse (which has since been retired and is destined for framed existence on the wall). We saw his show (Supernatural) at the Hard Rock in Vegas and it was unbelievably great.

To top it off, last night we went to see Cindy Blackman, Jack Bruce, Vernon Reid and John Medeski in the Tony Williams Lifetime Tribute at Yoshi's in Oakland, Ca. Small world.. Carlos Santana was sitting at the table right behind us. Francie, of course, went over to talk to him again. He was extremely gracious, a really nice guy. At the end of the show Carlos got up on stage and joined everyone in a version of the Cream classic "Sunshine of your Love". It was fantastic. Especially in a small setting like that.

Anyway, I would like to thank Carlos for being who he is and giving me and many others some of the creative inspiration that drives us.

-- Steve

Lyrics
In Spanish:

Como saber lo que otros
quierian hacerme entender
la vida no es cuento de hades
soy parte el corazon quebrantado

Hey, eres mio?
Siempre, eternamente
Oh hey, no me mientes
me amas, es mas fuerte que esto

Mirame no me mientes
Y tus manos, no me robes
Quien eres, y quien sera
no es justo, juravas
no esta bien
como sera que calma?

Hey, eres mio?
Siempre, eternamente
Oh hey, no me mientes
me amas, es mas fuerte que esto

Como saber lo que otros
o tan mal que termino oh
La vida no es cuento de hadas
conozco el corazon quebrantados

Hey, eres mio
siempre, eternamente
Oh hey, no me mientes
me amas, es mas fuerte no es asi, no es asi?

In English:

How was I supposed to know
what everybody said was so?
And this life ain't no fairy tale
I'm going where the broken hearted go

Hey, aren't you mine?
Forever and longer...
Oh hey, don't you lie
you love me, and its stronger than this

Show me your face, don't lie to me
Show me your hands, don't steal from me
Who are you now? And who will you be?
This isn't fair, you swore to me
This isn't right, how could you be so cool?

Hey aren't you mine?
Forever and longer?
Hey, don't you lie,
you love me, and its stronger than this

How was I supposed to know
just how wrong that this would go?
And this life ain't no fairy tale
I know what the broken hearted know

Hey, aren't you mine?
Forever and longer?
Oh hey, don't you lie
you love me, and its stronger...isn't it? Isn't it?

Great Job Steve, Scott
Interesting effect with the dual drums...didn't realize that's how you accomplished this. VERY Santana guitar. You did a wonderful job on this, Steve. I'm impressed. Scott, lovely as usual. Thanks so much to both of you for putting the work in on this. Its awesome!

Hey
Great tune. The spanish guitar at the beginning just drives the song forward and what follows is brilliant. Keeping the vocal in Spanish works really well. Lovely vocal and great guitar work, Scotts percussion as usual is fab. Awesome
tonestones said 2352 days ago (February 10th, 2011)
Hey
I really love playing that Spanish guitar. When Natalie first shared this song with me she showed me both english and spanish versions. I jumped on the spanish version when I heard the flamenco-like guitar in my head. I'm really glad you like it. Thanks.

Hey
This is one of those songs that I just couldn't wait to hit play simply because of the musicians involved. Three of my favorites together. Instant fan and download.

Great song and a wonderful arrangement. This stands out amongst the list of great MJ tracks.

Natalie sounds wonderful. She always does. But I love how this song gives her an opportunity to really open up.

Carlos Santana
Not only did you capture the guitars, but wow Steve, its the whole Santana sound...with your own spin and sound I have come to love. You know how to make a percussion section man!
Natalie----wow! great job as I have watched this one grow, even from the live version. Just great!!
Thanks both for letting me add my $.02

Scott, we've used this technique very successfully on the last few tunes we've done together. I think it works really well!. As I've told you before I think the combination of percussion and bass are the foundation of everything. Can't wait to do another one with you!

Thanks, Cees
This is the first Latin Rock tune I've done. It kind of crosses a few genres, but it was clear to me from the beginning that the rhythm had to be solid. I devoted almost half the tracks of this song to rhythm (a combination of latin hand percussion and 2 trap sets). I'm glad you liked it.

Hey
WOWZERS!!!! this is just absolutely top notch AWESOME!!! the 3 of you make an incredible collab team and i hope to hear much MUCH more from this configuration of musicians in the future! Fabulous song - your new guitar shines Steve, and Nat's vocals are incredible as usual. I love this effect of Scott on one side and your drumming on the other - that is a VERY cool idea!

Hey Karen!
I hope Steve is ok with me jumpin in..hahah.
I had a great track to play to, lemme tell you!! It may not sound like playing right on time...and one the beat (no quantization on my drums), giving a live feel as you and I have discussed. But, all the Kudos go to the front men and woman here, because without this cool track, it would not have worked anyway. (saludo from Tennessee!) Cool Idea...Yes it is (thanks Steve)

Steve this really came out well! Yeh I got the chance to hear some of this in the development stage but those early versions did not include Scott or Natalie's harmonies. This is just amazing. It is an excellent collab - I really like your unique style, and I am truly looking forward to working with you very soon! Great job - I really enjoyed this, and, oh - DL'd!

Love the Spanish guitar work with the wagging proggie-tail, beautifully integrated... and although this is a bit busy with all the guitar, keys, and great rhythm work, everything drops down to let Natalie belt it out over the top. Excellent musicianship and mixing, you 3!

Love the anecdotal story about you and Francie and Carlos... and hey! *I* met you and Francie in San Francisco, and NEITHER of you autographed MY purse (OK, so I didn't have one, but still...) :-)

Muy cool!
Terrific post everyone - vocals are strong and sound great, instruments perfectly picked and played for their parts in the song. There's a few places where there seems to be a slight tempo difference between the looped percs and Scott's drums, which adds to the live feel - as opposed to two looped tracks being totally in sync all the time. This really adds a great "live" feel to the song.
Very enjoyable!

You sure do pay attention to percussion detail...I eventually turned the click off, and to me it was like a slight delay. man v.s. machine. It worked rather well, and this is the 2nd or 3rd we have trued like this (very fun and a new concept for me)..Steve and Natalie are amazing..all kudos to them, otherwise, no drums or loops would work . thanks Neil

Beautiful
I had to take a double look at the pic, my Dad is a splitting image of Carlos Santana. It must be the Latin blood.

Que hermosa cancion, me gusta mucho la letra. Nat, you sound wonderful singing in Spanish. Steve, your guitar playing is fabulous, very reminiscent of CS, killer! Scott, your drumming is amazing. I would have liked to hear them a bit louder in the mix though.

Awesome collab!!!

Hey
How totally smooth and slinky. The acoustic is perfect. Just the right prog and south of the border mix. My only nit is that the lead guitars- although exceptionally played- seem excessively thin sounding. Like using a solid-state distortion amp for the 80's. Gorgeous on all other levels. Totally dig it.
