Lyrics
Fifty Dollars

Now Rooster was a man,

I mighty mighty tough man

Known across the  land

And everybody new his name

To town came Mattie Ross

She needed a real trail boss

She was troubled deep.

Just couldn’t get much sleep

Her father shot his horse stolen

How she mourned his terrible death

If she had to kill him herself

If it took her very last breath

Clancy her father’s killer

Finding him nearly drove her insane

She new Rooster was the one

That could get the job done

(Mattie owed Rooster $50.00)

To the mountains of Winding Star

To scour no matter how far

Clancy on that mountain land

To catch him would sure be grand

Clancy in an outlaw gang

Rooster wanted  him in to hang

Mattie shot and killed old Clancy

And she fell into a cave from the bang

Bit from a snake

Rooster sucked her bite to save

Pulled her out of the deep dark den

Mattie thought it was the end

Suffering from the poisonous wound

Rooster held her in his arms

Staggering on that desert floor

Rooster had a nightmare chore

Lead Guitar

Miles in the hot sun

Rooster thought his life was done

Mattie  was delirious indeed

Rooster found what they did need

Knew someone was home

Saved young Mattie’s life

She became nobody’s wife

(Chorus

 Years since she’d been saved

She found rooster dead and in a grave

Shipped his body back to her farm

There it wouldn’t see any harm

(Chorus)

Bought with the $50.00 she owed Rooster Cogburn

Here is a fun little read on
a Leo Kottke interview I just read a few moments ago:

He has a great since of humor I think and is in my opinion one of the greatest "talker's between songs I've ever heard. Brilliant actually, plus his great guitar playing and nice voice!

Really like this man. Proper folk music like the classic Nine Pound Hammer etc in style which you pull off so well. Cracking guitar work and lovely vocal. Compelling stuff

Love your picking. Sounds so clean and neat and perfectly timed, you're an inspiration to a fumbler like me.

Enjoyed the campfire simplicity of this.

Thanks

Nice picking
Is that a nylon strung guitar..or if not what guage steels are you using. It has a nice and mellow tone, great job, great lyrics and great singing...just the sort of vox that this type of song requires.

No it's a steel
string, I try to use acoustic lghts but not happy with it being not solid enough. I still need to go with a heavier 1 and 2 strings I think.

Thanks for asking and posting !

That movie should have featured your playing. They missed out big time. Thanks for the story. I've got the movie in my Netflix queue, although you already told me what was gonna happen. ;-)

I found this through a Facebook event!
Good idea to put out the word through Facebook. So, now that I'm here, can I get your signature, Bill? I am a big fan of your artistry. And this song ranks high among your evocative storytelling creations. What a pleasure it is to hear your resonance again. Interesting how you drag out last syllable of each stanza. Something went wrong with "Just couldn’t get much sleep." Sleep sounds like rrrain. I would reduce that stretchy descent. It's too affected.

Thanks Richard
for the tips, I have to still work on getting perfect diction while fingerpicking. It is always a challenge for me. The hardest part for me is memorizing the lyrics. Some people it is a breeze, but I guess that is why I fingerpick better than singing. Is because to learn the words, I just play and play until I kind of get it. It makes me a better player but I guess.
