Description
Song of Broken Promises was written by the davisamericas long long ago as we were still exploring the endless possibilities with music. It started out as a guitar concerto for four hands, but quickly took to new directions as we came against some problems with that. Jack switched over to the keyboard, and it took flight from there. (And now the truth.)
Song of Broken Promises is another from Jack’s and my archives that hasn’t seen daylight for many years, and this is the beauty of MacJams and it’s wonderful reservoir of talent. Our friends here have brought it back to life. Andy, Maureen, Roxy, Joseph and Victor have donated their creative energies to present our song, and I really love what they have done for it. Roxy lends her beautiful voice to help me sing it. Victor fed my fantasy with his flute and added a bonus with the drums. Joe plays a warm and perfect bass, and Andy and Maureen sweetened it with their mandolin and guitars. Jack is on the vibes, a new sound to bring it into the 21st century. Thanks all you guys for your contributions. Hope everyone enjoys it. Terry

Lyrics
Song of Broken Promises

She watched me through a windowpane on a cold November eve

The Hunters Moon was on my back as I took my leave

I stopped and turned to see her there in the lantern’s light

I felt a blessing, then slipped into the shadows of the night

Down by the river when we were younger

We both promised each other we would always be together

Beneath the moon the hounds will bay, but the moon will never hear

And it never heard that promise we made with hearts that were so pure

That night I looked into her eyes and made this sacred vow

“I will be with you until I die; nothing else will my heart allow!”

Down by the river when we were younger

We both promised each other we would always be together

The swaddling bands of our innocence and a veiled reality

Tricked us into a penitence for what our hearts truly believed

We broke that sacred promise, and we left it there on the path

But unless you’ve reached your journey’s end, there’s no point in looking back

Down by the river when we were younger

We both promised each other we would always be together

and I must say....
it was a pure joy to listen to each solo track as they assembled into quiet an amazing take of a very old and dear musical friend. Terry your vocals are still just stellar to my ears .... even after many years of listening it always leaves me wanting more. Victor and his flute were a constant solo listen. Having seen him perform live I could just close my eyes and see him playing in the living room. Outstanding work including a great drum track. Roxy is an angel ... I know she must be because her voice comes from heaven. First time working with Maureen and it was great. Her guitar is totally a perfect companion to the track and fills it with warmth and emotion. Andy once again show how he is not just a "sax" guy. The mando was there from the first time Terry and I ran thru this tune many years ago... we just didn't "hear" it. It made the tune take wing in all the right places. Finally the bass ..... Joe is a great new friend from last year and I love the bass on this. It adds the ground floor but it also moves in a most pleasing way. All in all a really great experience working with "the band" ..... and I for one am quiet pleased to have been a part of this. Thanks guys. You are all amazing.

Very nice song. Beautiful work by all. Lyrics and vocals are great. The guitars and mandolin are nice. However, I think the flute and drums really make this one fabulous. Great job everyone!

So, he went away and knew he wasn't coming back? This is very beautiful, but sad. The vocals and that flute drive it. The guitar, mandolin and bass are like a well synced string section in an orchestra. Thanks, band.

Memorable
Haunting, open sound that is made even more memorable by the flute and vibes. Strong song that is given a very sympathetic treatment. Vocals are very good but I felt that the lead vocal could have been just a shade more prominent in the mix. Just a thought. Like this a lot. Warm regards, Peter.

Wow- what a collaboration
First off the melody line and instrumentation were gorgeous. I am a sucker for the vibes instrument and this was used wonderfully.. The harmonies, right on target. Unique and hauntingly lovely. I enjoyed everything about this. The flute and all vocals oh and yes the mandolin, another instrument fav of mine that isn't used often enough.. My sincere compliments to all of you..

Terry
This is a cool collaboration and Maureen says that she likes it and it sounds good... even though she could say so herself, she doesn't log in very much. So often her acoustic guitar gets covered up in the electric world and that is what is so appealing about this song is that is nearly all hand made music. I wasn't even going to be involved in this one and after we recorded her guitar parts I half-heartedly screeched out a mando part and sent it on. You guys were so kind in judiciously and quietly waiting for me to redo it. That's what I like about working on collaborations with you because you allow the music to unfold and there is a trust that comes over time. Glad to work with everyone again...

What a great story
I always love a song that goes somewhere, lyrically and musically. This accomplishes this with such a pretty tune and a musical accompaniment that engages right from the open pan flutes. ... When you break into the percussion solos, THEY are suddenly pitched in a new key. A bit disconcerting when you come back to the original one... In every other respect, this is a beautiful song that it beautifully arranged and beautifully presented. All your collaborators are to be congratulated, too, as their backup vocals and instrumentation bring your vision of a story-song to life. Oh, and those twinkling stars (bells) are quite wonderful.

Always a thrill to have you listen, and naturally, I zero in on your assessment of the vocals. I'm glad you liked them. Roxy sings like an angel, and handled the harmonies beautifully. Andy and Maureen teamed up to bless us with that wonderful set of strings, Victor's flute and drums are probably what inspired me to work this song up to begin with. They came out just as I imagined. Joseph's bass was a great surprise. I never gave the bass much thought in this song before, but what he did took the whole thing to a higher level. I'm really grateful to them all. Song of Broken Promises
beautiful blend of talents. The vocals especially. Love the harmonies. You did a great job on the mix & production. Everything is very much in its own space. Moody blues lush. Those real vibes? awesome sounding.

Thanks, John

Very big band
I missed this, literally. Haunting tune, written and performed smoothly. There is a lot going on but i can hear everything clearly. Loving that backing vocal melody with the gentle guitars. Mind you, you can't go wrong with such a line up. Pro stuff.
