Description
(North of the Humber, Song 4 of 10)

The small fishing port of Seahouses in Northumbria has functioned as a base from which to visit the group of rocky offshore outcrops known as the Farne Islands for two centuries or more, and a boat trip to see the the seal and bird colonies there is still very popular indeed. The company I went with had seven boats running, and they were one of four that offered passages of varying lengths. The farthest isle of any size is Longships, of Grace Darling fame, and the largest, Inner Farne, was for many years the solitary dwelling place of St Cuthbert.

The pic is of Inner Farne, near the little landing. For those interested in more information and photos and a short video of the trip, you are welcome to visit a blog i wrote on the subject at : http://www.myspace.com/marcrattue/blog/537063888

i have employed Zimple-Gate software and tried to reduce the amount of hiss on a track for the first time. Hope you think it is an improvement!

i am greatly indebted to VicDiesel for the recorder track. It was exactly what i wanted for the song and i was amazed that anyone could just inhabit someone else's song with such little information and produce such a brilliant solo so quickly. Thanks, Victor!

Lyrics
Farne Islands Boat Trip

Come, see the seals,
And the birds of the sea,
Breathe in the keening air,
Under the wide Northumbrian sky
Out by the Farne Islands fair
Our time we leave ashore, my friend,
Where the sea runs just the same,
As when the first birds flew this way,
And things with the water came,

Stand on the isle,
Where the saint lived alone,
Cuthbert of Lindisfarne,
Year after year with the sea and sky,
Through stormy days and calm,
Though how could it be he was not disturbed,
By the shrill and raucous sound,
Of a thousand seabirds clamouring,
And seals barking close around?

Don’t be afraid,
Of the cries and the fret,
At the number of creatures round,
They’ve seen us before and they’ll see us again,
From Seahouses outward bound,
They’ve all had their food already,
The seals lazing by the shore,
And share with us this easy morn,
The rest of the carnivore.

Lovely tune
Working for the RNLI as a fundraising manager I know the area well though I've never actualy been out to the Isls myself. This was a song obviously inspired one of those calm summer days out there. A wild winter day might create a thrash metal version!!Lovely job from both of you Marc.

Summer's Day
That's quite right, lads, it was a great and rare day, with a sky of a deeper blue than i think i can ever remember down south. Probably the clean air up there, perhaps.

Glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks for listening, and thanks for posting your thoughts on the song. It is really gold dust for a reclusive muddler with an all-too-keen sense on my own modest talents as a musician like me to hear that the song is enjoyable and effective.

Thanks so much!

Nice...
there are so many things to like about this quaint number. Your instrumentation gives it a charming, folk quality, and your vocal delivers the story with great clarity. I have thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful song and your performance of it.

I think the gate worked. Did you put it on the vocals only? Might try it on the guitar as well

Hi Cees!
glad you liked the result.

Tried the noise reduction to all recorded tracks but it seemed much more effective on the vocals for some reason.

Thanks for listening

Assured vocals
Hi Marc. Sorry for being a bit late to the party. I am enjoying your North of the Humber series, and this is no exception. It is obvious that you are becoming more confident with recording your work. The guitar interplay is very good on this. The vocals are assured and Vic's recorder adds wonderfully to the overall folk vibe. Well done. Peter.

Lovely!
The song is as pretty as the picture you put up. I love the violin and flue in the backing as I did the tune of the song. Well written. I can hear lots of work done on the lyrics as well. Love this piece.
