Description
In April, 2004, I was one composing maniac! Actually, at the time, I was doing a lot of arrangements of older music, and I dashed-off an arrangement for brass octet of the traditional Gospel classic, "Talk About Sufferin' Here Below (and let's keep following Jesus)." I submitted it to Sibelius Music, and there it sat until 2008, when I learned of a competition for brass band compositions. Having played only in small Salvation Army bands, I didn't feel confident in my ability to write for full brass band, so I sent the score off to a friend who is, Martin Tousignant.
Although Martin's arrangement (as well as his improvements) was superb, someone jealously complained that no joint effort could win the competition, so the piece again lapsed into neglect. Recently, however, the tune "Talk About Sufferin' Here Below" was used by Hollywood composer Carter Burwell in his soundtrack to the movie True Grit, but since he doesn't do much with it (oboe solo over sustained strings), I thought I'd demonstrate what can be done with such a fine American tune.

Lyrics
Talk about sufferin' here below and [let's keep a-followin' Jesus]*
Talk about sufferin' here below and let's keep a-lovin' Jesus
The Gospel train is coming, now don't you want to go?
And leave this world of sorrow and troubles here below.
Oh can't you hear it Father, now don't you want to go?
And leave this world of sorrow and troubles here below.
Talk about sufferin' here below and let's keep a-followin' Jesus
Talk about sufferin' here below and let's keep a-lovin' Jesus
Oh can't you hear it Mother, now don't you want to go?
And leave this world of sorrow and troubles here below.
Talk about sufferin' here below and let's keep a-followin' Jesus
Talk about sufferin' here below and let's keep a-lovin' Jesus
Oh can't you hear it Brother, now don't you want to go?
And leave this world of sorrow and troubles here below.
The Gospel train is coming, now don't you want to go?
And leave this world of sorrow and troubles here below.
Talk about sufferin' here below and let's keep a-lovin' Jesus

Powerful and effective arrangement, but i was a little disappointed that there were no vocals, although the lyrics were posted?
Realise that the lyrics help the listener comprehend the song even in its instrumental form, but i would have thought a gospel tune really has to be sung to hit top speed as an example of this genre?
Enjoyed it anyway. Thanks for the post.
