Description

Genre would be more in the line of a "choro" (cry). I wrote this after moving to the US to attend my senior year in high school. I went back to Brazil one more time for the summer after completing high school.

Included below is a link to the lyrics. The English translation corresponding to the Portuguese lyrics is written on every other line.

This was divine...
I grew up in the era when these sounds were enjoying great popularity and I'm happy they are coming back courtesy of excellent work like this John. As good as anything I've heard way back when and even more so...all the elements, from composition to orchestration and vocal--all top notch. Yet another one that makes me wonder how we get such fine music for FREE! Incidentally, I have to ask you: what is that unusual sounding instrument that is heard under this (it starts at the intro). I've always whatever that is (and a very good touch on this track too!) Take care now and thanks again, Michael

I'm glad you asked. The first instrument is a birimbau. A bow looking instrument with a gourd opened on one end strapped to the bow and string. The instrument is played by holding a shaker and stick in one hand. Striking the string with the stick and shaking the shaker, holding the bow and fender washer (coin) with the other hand while applying the washer in variations against the string (wire), resting the gourd against and away from the stomach repeatedly for a wah effect.

Yes I use to own and play one though what I used in the mix were a few of Apple loops.

The same thing. It does lose effectiveness when buried in the music and the stick striking the wire sound does get a little annoying. When I cut the birimbau out during the chorus it sounded empty so I left it there. I didn't want the guy standing around and he seemed to be getting into it. Seriously though, I feard the same way with that guy playing the triangle. Thanks for your construction and kind words. It's a pleasure to read your comments.

I love latin music, did a few myself a few years ago, worked with a percussionist from brazil named Geraldo D'arbilly (only mentioned that because you said you spent time there, maybe you know him?). Anyway, I love the percussion work here, and the vocals sound good too. Very tasty guitar work happening too! Very much enjoyed this :)

This is really great
Man, the production on this is so freaking clear. Every time I hear someone putting out something that sounds this great it makes me want to try even harder on my own recordings.

I'm about half fluent in spanish so when I hear Portuguese I'm thinking that I should be able to understand what's being said but it's just different enough to not make any sense.

Great song... This one goes into "MJ Favorites" song list.
