Bury me up side down

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
There's a place called Box Hill in the north downs of Surrey where a Major Peter Labilliere lived. He was slightly eccentric and his final wish was that he be buried upside down because he thought the world was 'topsy turvey' and he might be able to make sense of it when he was dead..or so the story goes.
This is just about the same thing. Thinking the world is mad and hoping to find some sense in it.

Hope you like it.

Many thanks to Ben Boldt for various drum presets.
And to George and Bill for helping me to pull this song together.

Lyrics
Life at times is complicated
Extremes of pleasure and pain
You try so hard to understand it
Feel like you’re going insane

But the world is mad and turning blindly
wish it would all stay still
You’re seeking peace and comprehension
way up on old box hill

Rhyme and reason are out of season
so bury me upside down
It’s topsy turvey on the A30
so bury me upside down
I’m feeling queasy so let me down easy
and bury me upside down
A slight reminder to those who see me
and bury me upside down

Childhood dreams and fields of green
Resigned to the 9 to 5
Old before you’re young my dear
Half dead before you’re alive
Living out of skips and bins
when there’s enough to go round
No one seems to have an answer
is the only answer I’ve found

Rhyme and reason are out of season
so bury me upside down
It’s topsy turvey on the A30
so bury me upside down
I’m feeling queasy so let me down easy
and bury me upside down
A slight reminder to those who see me
and bury me upside down

Poison in a pretty pill
but no one seems to get well
Some peoples idea of heaven
is my idea of hell
Drugs and bombs and paper tigers
spend your time in fear
Drown your sorrows, no tomorrows
and have another beer

Rhyme and reason are out of season
so bury me upside down
It’s topsy turvey on the A30
so bury me upside down
I’m feeling queasy so let me down easy
and bury me upside down
A slight reminder to those who see me
and bury me upside down

Very clever!
Great groove and anguished vocal!

Loved the story and how you used it in the lyrics.

A bit bleak though...

Cheers

Bleak??
Hey, this is about as cheery as you'll get from me :-)
The anguished vocal comes from worrying wether my mic stand is going to fall over mid vocal take.
Glad you liked it and thanks for dropping in
cheers

An
excellent song Brendan and some really great lyrics. I actually live very close to Box Hill and have been there many times.
Great drums and a lovely flowing rhythm with some great vocals, I especially like the chorus and how you sing this song, lots of variation.
Very much enjoyed, thanks for the download.

I haven't been there for a while but spent a few lovely days down there.
I actually wrote this a while ago but have been trying to get a decent version recorded of it for ages.

Nice vocal!
Nice Peter Gabriel style vocal - you really dramatise this piece! The music feels very 80s - which is fine by me!! Nice funky bass and choppy chords really propel this along. Cool song - nice one!!

wow dude from note 1
you had me hook line and sinker, great intro, I agree with the Peter Gabriel comparrison, love the ballsy vocal on the hook! Great production, I say stellar post! I would love to sing this song! Great job! By the end of the song I'm singing the hook and probably will be for days!!!!!!!! One of the best songs I've heard in a long while, I'd pitch this song hard!

Beguiling....
Hi KB. Catchy beginning leads into some really nice vocals. The way you have weaved an interesting local story into a beguiling pop song is excellent. The mix is high quality also. Great post. Warm regards, Peter.

Nice
Love the breezy music against the quirky/pensive lyrics. maybe a little XTC or SPACE influence creeping in. The soft synth sound deep in the background is very nice in the verse. Vocals seem to have an awkward reverb setting. I wonder if a little more flat/upfront eq with a light echo tail would blend a bit better.

Vox tip
Thanks for the tip.
I'm still a bit 'lazy' when it comes to getting better vox mixes.
I think I just used the 'live performance' preset in GB, double tracked it and panned the 2nd track to the right and dragged it a bit behind the original.
I will have a go with your suggestion and see how it goes.
Thanks for dropping in and your comments

i like it
great concept. the human situation is absurd when you think about it, so an absurdly literal solution makes an amount of sense.

your stuff is always so pro sounding, everything in it's correct place. has a great big 80's arena sound. love that little lead guitar turnaround on the intro to the verse.

Soles Bound For Heaven
As always, a really great story and killer guitars and vocals. I was hoping for the two track challenge you'd submit a song with your strumming acoustic and your expressive vocals. Your production skills continue to get better and better.

thanks Bob
I was toying with entering the 2 trk challenge but I got distracted by the other 5 songs I've got on the boil at the moment. I'm glad you liked the production. I've been struggling with 'ear fatigue' where I'm not sure if the stuff I'm doing sounds rubbish or not. You kind comments prove I'm wrong.
Thank you for dropping in
Cheers

'Cause I think that may be the way to do it ;-) Cool idea and cool tuneage.
