Description
A few years ago I met one of the most beautiful women I know. She is gorgeous. This song is for her. She has Body Dysmorphic Disorder or BDD. It is a cousin to Anorexia, in that it affects the afflicted person's sense of perception. She sees flaws in her physical appearance that just aren't there. She can't bring herself to go out unless she spends literally hours on her hair and make up, anywhere between 3 to 6 hours depending on how she is feeling at the time. Then, when she does make it out the door it is a terrifying experience for her, and usually she has to have a few drinks to quell all the nerves. So it is rare that she even leaves her house. I can't imagine having to live with this disorder that very often leads to suicide. She is doing well and is trying very hard to find ways to cope. I hope she is able to overcome it ultimately. This is for you A.
I have been working on this song for over 2 years mostly the arrangement although I have been recording it and mixing it for almost 6 months. I couldn't put it together the way I was hearing it in my head. Enter Ed Wemmerus This man is easily one of the best producers we have here at MJ. This song wouldn't be what it is without his input as a producer and an artist. I was still having trouble with the song up until last night. I was furiously throwing as much mud against the wall as I could, frantically trying to tweak it into submission. Moaning all the while to Ed that it was missing something. I sent what I thought was the final mix to Ed last night thinking I should just upload it and be done with it. Well... I am glad I didn't. This morning I got into it again and Ed got ahold of me online minutes after I started thinking "to hell with it I'll just upload it this way". "Check your email" he said, "I sent you another guitar track I did this morning" (today). It was a track with Ed just playing spontaneously noodling with some call and response and fills. With very little re-arranging the track you hear panned slightly to the right with a clean telecaster sound is what he sent me. I still can't believe how it so expertly filled what I wanted for the song but couldn't get from my head to my hands (very often my biggest problem). It is like he reached right into my head and pulled it out, and then very humbly gave it to me. He still maintains it was nothing... just something to do on a Thursday morning. Thank you Ed you are the producer, performer, and co- writer of "Perception".

Lyrics
Perception © 2008 Guy Groves / Ed Wemmerus
She's on the outside
outside looking in
Different on the inside
she'll never let you in.
It's always in the mirror
hideous and grotesque
Paralyzed by a fear
that never lets her rest
Chorus
Perception is the key
Perception is the lock
It's a vicious circle
Caught between a hard place
and a rock
It's like a stain that won't come out
that everyones gonna see
It's an ever present doubt
it never lets her be
The surface might be calm
there's a current underneath
She's been fighting it for so long
she's never known peace.
Chorus
Bridge
I wanna make it right for her
and help her see again
Wrap my arms around her
and chase away the pain
Chorus
solo
Chorus out
She's on the outside
outside looking in
Different on the inside
she'll never let you in.
It's always in the mirror
hideous and grotesque
Paralyzed by a fear
that never lets her rest
Chorus
Perception is the key
Perception is the lock
It's a vicious circle
Caught between a hard place

such a good summary of the disorder. I always wondered if you kept up with how she is doing. Glad you managed to get this recorded and had the help of the wonderful Mr Ed. A great tribute and love the vocal style on this one
