irish (40)traditional (65)folk (370)atmospheric (12)spooky (22)creepy (26)ghost (26)dead (20)death (132)ethereal (29)
Description:
Time to float away on a sea of ghostly voices as I try out my new condenser mic - with an old Irish song about talking to the dead. This has been a regular favourite on the folk scene for years, but I love it and wanted to do my own version. In Celtic myth, swans often symbolise death; here the image of the swan flying over the lake is a metaphor for the soul's journey into the afterlife.

Lyrics:
My young love said to me "my mother won't mind
And my father won't slight you for your lack of kind"
And she laid her hand on me and this she did say
"Oh it will not be long, love, till our wedding day"

Then she went away from me and she moved through the fair
And fondly I watched her move here and move there
And then she went onward, just one star awake
Like the swan in the evening moves over the lake

Last night she came to me, my dead love came in
So softly she came, her feet made no din
And she laid her hand on me and this she did say
"Oh it will not be long, love, till our wedding day"

Hardware:
Mac G5, Behringer B-1 mic, M-Audio Keystation 49e, Tascam US-122 ... and hopefully no line hiss!

shivers &mdash 01/26/05 - 01:11:23 PM
Very beautifully done! The mic picks up your breath,
which adds a nice crispness to this slowly floating song. I
see that you found some good-sounding bagpipes too.
The sparseness of the background music I thought was
almost perfect, though I wanted the harmonies brought
forward ever so slightly. I kept getting carried off
somewhere with your voice and lyrics, it was hard to
switch into left-brain critique-mode... which is meant as a
great compliment :)

Thank you. I really appreciate your comments. I was interested to know
what people thought of the backing vocals because I couldn't tell
whether I'd underdone them or overdone them. I'm glad the song carried
you away somewhere, anyway - that's what I hoped it would do.

Yes! &mdash 01/26/05 - 02:29:18 PM
The new mic does justice to your voice, certainly...but
what justice you have done to this song! The haunting
harmonics with the steady lilt of the main vocals.
So beautiful. So well done.
I've a soft spot for folk songs like these, and hope more
are on the way....

Thanks Mystified, I'm glad you like it. It's a song I'm very attached to and
I hoped I could do justice to it. I owe a lot to you for the help and
encouragement you've been giving me - you've helped me find new
areas of subtlety in my voice which I didn't know were there.

For folk's sake! &mdash 01/26/05 - 04:02:11 PM
This is one of my favourites of your folky ones. As I
think I've mentioned before this folky stuff is not
always to my tastes but this is a lovely song and your
rendition is beautiful. The vocals are first rate, as
ever, but I also like what you've done with the
arrangement - very ethereal. Sorted!

Hooray, I've managed to do a folk song you don't mind too much! Things
are looking up. Thanks for your continued support - you know how
much I appreciate it.

you found them &mdash 01/26/05 - 08:27:39 PM
I see you found the bag pipes you were looking for and
the mic your lovely singing deserves. Beautiful and clean
sound. But I didn't notice that there was any hiss or
ambient noise on your vocals until it suddenly cut off after
your last line. I'd recommend you record some ambient
silence with the same settings you used when recording
your vocals to keep the vocal track alive until it can fade
out with the music. Other than that, perfect.

[ Reply to This ]
you found them &mdash 01/27/05 - 05:36:07 PM
Thanks Peter, it's always nice to hear from you. I'm still looking out for
better bagpipe sounds because I wasn't 100% happy with the one I've
used here - but maybe that's just me! I slapped plenty of reverb on it to
take the edge off its MIDIness, and that'll have to do for now. But I'll look
into your suggestion about the ambient silence - there is a trace of hiss
at the end. Though I'm getting such a clean signal now from the new
set-up, I think most of the background noise is just my asthmatic
wheezing...

song. Pacing of the song seems appropriate considering
the subject matter. Well Done!

channeling perfection &mdash 01/28/05 - 11:46:57 AM
Thank you Suzanne. I'm glad you said that, because channeling is what I
was aiming at. Some of these songs are so ancient they seem to have a
momentum of their own, and it's a case of trying to tap into that.

Nicely done &mdash 01/28/05 - 12:48:45 PM
Your crisp yet drifting voice works excellently with this
song, and the support work is very competent. I have
heard this song before, I think on a tape with Van
Morrison (great musician) and the Cheiftains?

Well done, although does the non cover policy of Macjams
not apply to this?

Nicely done &mdash 01/28/05 - 12:57:14 PM
Thanks Archy. You may well have heard someone like the Chieftains do
this song, it's been recorded lots of times. The no-covers rule on
MacJams only applies to songs under copyright. There's no copyright on
this one because it's so old nobody knows who wrote it.

Wonderful Performance and Production &mdash 01/29/05 - 07:05:42 AM
Very Haunting.
Have you gotten Jam Pack 4 yet? It has a harp and some
tuned percussion that you might find useful in future
productions.
This pursuit of creating music can get kind of pricey, can't
it? :)

You're right there! I've blown all my savings on the mic and interface, so
it may be a while before I can have any new toys. But it's worth knowing
that Jampack 4 has those sounds, just in case Santa comes early. Thanks
for your comments!

Gossamer resonance &mdash 01/29/05 - 12:02:39 PM
Your voice possesses an ethereal lightness and delicacy as
it floats over ancient seas, lakes, hills and forests. You
have tapped into the collective unconscious of your
forebears.

Yes, the chorus can come on stronger. Maybe add some
male choral voices to fill out the spectrum. What about a
few deep and distant bass drum hits to demarcate points
in the journey? Ooh, I get goosebumbs just thinking about
the possibilities within this song. Singing gulls, highland
flutes, lowland groans, mystical sparkles...

Gossamer resonance &mdash 01/29/05 - 02:59:34 PM
Well, it's fired your imagination ... that's got to be a good sign! I'm open
to suggestions about what else to add to it. Interesting point you make
about the collective unconscious: I did meditate on the song for a while
before I recorded it to bring my consciousness to the right level.

Enya-esque &mdash 01/30/05 - 10:29:35 AM
Your voice is truly lovely. You achieved a haunting and
meditative mood with its quality and deliberate phrasing
on this track.

The drone also adds to the meditative mood. I felt like I
was floating in space.

This definitely reminds me of Enya's work. You have
captured the soul, the essence of this ancient Irish song in
much the same way that Enya does with her
performances.

I look forward to hearing more vocal selections. Brava!

crystalline and intimate &mdash 01/30/05 - 11:21:50 AM
This is as good as any Loreena McKennitt track. The
intimacy of your recorded voice, the clean track, the
simplicity, the purity of concept, all excellent. All the way
to the absolutely crystalline fade, this is a top notch
recording and affecting performance. Perfect.

Very nice! &mdash 01/30/05 - 05:30:09 PM
It features by far your best instrument - that voice! I like
that the background stays simple and brings out the
vocal. To nitpick - I agree that the bagpipe is a little midi-
ish but it doesn't detract from the mood. If you could find
good loops of recorded bagpipes might work better than
software instruments or softfonts.

Very nice! &mdash 01/31/05 - 10:55:11 AM
Yes, I'm actively looking for more authentic-sounding instruments, since
these atmospheric songs really show up the plasticky tone of MIDI
instruments. The ideal solution would be to find myself a friendly uillean
pipe player ...

Like it. Wish there were more stanzas. :)

A little slow, but I didn't mind. I like the minimalism. I like
the backing vocals.

So this is a lesbian song, right? Just kidding!

I listen to these songs as stories and am always
wondering, "How'd she die?" I realize these were written a
little before modern medicine, so strange things, or
simple things could cost a life, but I always wonder.

Glad you stepped up to nicer equipment. I plan to do so
soon myself.

I'm glad you like it. It's always tricky when I want to do songs which are
written from a man's point of view ... though interestingly almost every
version of this song I've ever heard has been sung by a woman. There's a
lot of cross-gender singing going on in the world of folk music!
