Description

Special thanks to Dani (RAVENS) for having the good nature and patience to listen and give me some nice feedback to this song.

This song is the result of a personal challenge by Julian (hackneybloke). He said several months back that I need to write a folk song. BTW Julian, I still haven’t forgotten about the rebellious song you had in mind.

Well, I couldn't do a folk song with the equipment I had, so I purchased a new guitar, amp and mic so that I could get a much better sound that I could from my other gear. I am so OCD!

This song is what happens when a metal guy does folk.

	Thanks rr for dropping by and having a listen. You are right. I didn't know whether to put this under folk or western. It has a real retro western feel to the guitar chops. The preamp I have has very dark sounding compression so I have to keep that backed off pretty far so that the amp sounds more transparent. Check out my latest song called A Friend to the End

Great sounding guitar and your playing is smooth. You seem to have a David Gilmour approach to the acoustic. I really like your lead playing on this. And the vocals during the solo are a nice touch.

Come to think of it, your lyrics make use of opposites in a way not unlike what Pink Floyd did on Wish You Were Here (So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, blue skies from pain.) ( There is great calm! There are great storms).

Way to rise to a challenge Michael! Now tell me you did challenge Julian to produce a hard rock track!

I have a D18 and I have problems switching to it from the strat when playing runs. I admire the way you've been pushing your songwriting comfort zone lately. My Martin has such wonderfully full tone. It has been a struggle to try and capture it in rocording. I definitely admire people that do that for a living and get the best recordings.

The action on an acoustic is so different than an electric. You have to be so clean on the acoustic. I played several of the parts over and over before I got a nice clean track.

It was brutal.

This was very different Eddie--and not being well versed in some styles, I'm not sure how to describe or label (if one is applicable) it--I just know I greatly enjoyed this. The harmony line you added had this wonderful atonality to it that I'm thinking was quite a challenge--it worked out excellently. Good song and your performance of it was solid. You floored me with this man! Really awesome! I could toss out some of the same "sounds like"s as above, but what it all gets down to is this is really all you. I agree with Dani, this is a serious fav!
I can hear how much you worked on those harmonies, I love harmony, and I know how difficult it is to nail em. Your accoustic tracks are clean and nicely played as always.
Sometimes stepping away from the comfort zone can produce some surprising results, Julian's brain seed payed off here for sure!

	I liked how I thought .. I heard glimpes of Ozzy and Led Zep in this, with a hint of Spain. Quite a catchy effect that almost consistent separation in the vocals had. Michael, the recording on this is flawless! I've tried to record acoustic before and it's a complete minefield but you've just done it perfect! Buying a complete new set up is a little extreme, but I applaud you!(I'm just jealous..) Beautifully produced song, executed with a deft touch and a well crafte4d tune into the bargain. I hear what people are saying about that western vibe but I think it's not really folk, nor western. You may have just created your own genre! Brilliant. Simply brilliant!

YAY....fasteddie is going ooooo ooooo ooooo...can you believe it fellow macjammers? hang on, i've just got to go and change into something tie-dyed...and roll a joint. hang on...did i take some acid...the guitar solo suddenly went really fast. man can you play guitar Mike! this is totally BRILLIANT. you could have fallen into the trap of creating something banal and obvious with predictable chord progressions.....but mike you came up with a GEM....and went to interesting and dangerous places....and it totally worked. your vocal delivery is excellent and assured - the lyrics are my only nit...but you know i'm always on your case about your lyrics....but seriously, i'm just after fasteddie perfection.....and this is pretty close to the perfect acoustic folk tune. i'm going to read the other comments now and see what the crowd thinks.
lol @ racerat....yeah....what hilarious 'art' work. everyone's saying you nailed it. you need to do more of this....it's just so much more interesting than you think.
so...dude....you totally blew me away with this....well done.

the inspiration. If anything I'm pretty much hooked up for the mecca rock ballad because you need acoustic guitar for that kind of stuff.

Who knows maybe I'll put something together on the acoustic that is worthy of an English gentleman's talents. I dunno... are you a gentleman Julian?

I did get another mic so now I should be able to double mic the acoustic for even better results.
