Description
Got a new toy: a Boss RC-50. It allows me to make tracks like this, live, in one take. Straight to two-track. (I only removed a bit from the middle somewhere.)

I would call it a looper
although some people call it a "phrase sampler". I can record three independent stacked tracks, called phrases, which can be synchronized or not. So in no time flat I can build up an orchestra of flutes. Then keep one phrase going, fade another out, and build something new. It's really cool.

The percussive bit is the same flute that plays the rest of the track.

Oh cool
Hardware or software? Is this an app? Really cool sounds, these are all flutes? Very interesting.

Hardware
One hardware gadget, and one flute. Played live, one take.

There's software for this too. But hardware is better for live playing.

A-loop D-loop, flute-loops
relaxing, slowly blending, the flutes waft in and caress the lobes... and like her hair always does, gently washes away any cares of the day. 0x0

It's a looper
Like a tape going round; you add new parts, and do not erase old ones. Now imagine three tapes in parallel....

It is as if a flutist
is walking through a rift in time and strains of his playing are stolen and echoed off walls along the way so he ends up playing along with all his other selves. It sounds magical as if conjuring a caress from the breeze. Thanks.

Boss RC-50
Biggest limitation: no effect send-return or multiple outs. It has three independent "phrases", meaning loops, but you can not bounce two phrases to one, or temporarily put an effect on just one phrase. Other than that it's very powerful. (Go to the Sweetwater page, which has a link to the manual.) Check out the forum post I just made.

Only 100% feedback in each phrases.

No memory cards. You can dump the whole memory to a computer, but that's not as flexible or extendable. The EH 8080 looper does have memory cards, but it's otherwise much more limited. For instance does not have Undo.

But knowing what I would like to add, I'm now of course going to reproduce this in Plogue Bidule, with my improvements.....

Thursday Loop
Not having multiple outs is a bummer, but it still seems like a very cool toy. Great for creating percussion loops as well, I would imagine. BTW, I liked this number.

Outs
One of the cool features is that there are multiple outputs of another sort. So I can have a metronome playing in my headphones, but not on the output that's being recorded. Also, you can have some phrases not go to the output. So you can build up a stack of new sounds in your headphones, and then unleash them all at once by sending that phrase to the output again.

Really, this is a crazy powerful unit.

Zoned
I was watching some vampire horror movie on Fearnet when i pressed play for Loop. The more it went on, the more i zoned out from the movie until i totally didn't know what was going on any more. Had to rewind because i became mesmerized by Thursday. Put some kindava brainwave generator in beneath the trks and one would prob get lost in some ethereal pit of their mind.

Doesn't R. Fripp use a similar principal for his guitars? (...as the endless looping and evolutions?)

Frippertronics
Yeah, he started doing it with two tape recorders, sending both guitar and 2nd tape to the 1st. The delay comes from the distance between 1st and 2nd unit.

I'm sure he's using something more sophisticated these days....

Oh, and this RC-50 is like having those 2 tape recorders time 3.

Thanks for the very cool comment!

Well, I wasn't watching a vampire movie, but I got zoned out. Fun new toy. Those things can be addictive. Nice of you to stop playing around long enough to record and post. Muchly enjoyed. Your picture reminds me of The Shipping News.

After hearing this, I find that almost inconceivable! I caught you in chat mentioning this slight the other day, so thought I'd make you feel better by commenting. You must have worked really hard on this Vic---really moving stuff here.

Man, when you buy a toy you don't play around! You went for their top of the line loop station. I've seen acoustic guitar players use simple loop recording pedals to provide rhythm guitar parts they can then solo over. But the capabilities you display here are far beyond that. And that you used them to create such lovely and interesting music is particularly impressive. Maybe I missed it, but how did you create the rhythmic loop that starts the piece?

Rhythm
Several of my native american flutes give a nice sharp "chiff" sound if you blow with a very sharp attack. So even the rhythms were flute....

Top of the line: yeah, I don't kid around. I think this is going to be how I can perform with the native flutes. The stuff that I've posted so far uses too many backing tracks, and 1/ I don't want to perform with canned backing 2/ even with a synth buddy it would be unperformable.

Very interesting. Can I admit I'm not keen on the percussive bit?....sorry. Much more organic without it. But the flutes are beautiful and haunting.

Loopers
I had a boss looper the one with 2 pedals, used it for live playing so I could do my own leads. Also just like this experimenting is so much fun. Sold it when I upgraded my processor to a Line 6 HD500. Miss the boss at times though. Look forward to hearing your other offerings.
