Description

I had this up the other night but after listening to it again was a bit digustified with the sound--it was too loud and had too much bass (I think, but what do I know?) Anyway, I remixed it and here it is again. The piano work on this is truly astounding (although I could murder him for that ending) and hope you enjoy it.

This was written by my main songwriter, Harold Arlen, and first appeared in the Broadway flop, "The Great Magoo" (1931). I'm not familiar with the play or Magoo, so I don't know if he was actually that great or not.

Really, I think the only version of this song I've ever liked was Nat King Cole's (man I wish I could sing like that!) and perhaps an instrumental of this by Benny Goodman and his quartet. You won't believe this, but did you know my late Uncle Herman posed for that "Jail" picture? It was rendered by Dali, but I'd recognize his beautifully sculpted features anywhere. Well, this is a nice little "pocket" song and being lazy as I am, I tend to do more of these than the "pull out all the stops" deals, but I'm due to slap one together in that line pretty soon. Scatman Crothers! I loved that guy! I have a set of recordings he made when he was part of a group called "The Cats and the Fiddle" (they are really worth seeking out--my favorite number by them is the much lauded "I Say Nuts to You"--definitely a classic and distinctly a seminal foray into the punk-grunge movement that followed decades later). The truth is, I'm never stable with my long "e" sound (partly because my sinuses have been so mucked up for so long that I've avoided tunes where there's a lot of those, so I need to relearn how to deliver that vowel sound now that I'm doing lots better thanks to today's latest miracle drugs (and a visit from Roto Rooter). You are close--I think the movie with this title came out maybe around 1972 or so featuring Ryan O'Neil and his daughter Tatum (always loved that name--it sounds like a name you'd give a baby couch potato or something).
