Description
Antone the cook shakes his spice cans to the rhythm of the music that vaguely comes through the kitchen walls. Pepper, shake, shake; salt; shake, shake; rosemary; skake; thyme, shake; pepper, shake,..... Wait. Did I already do that one?
This is an estampie, which is a very interesting form of improvisation. You play an improvised line, followed by the so-called "open ending", then the same (!!!) improvised line, followed by the closed ending. Then you improvise another line, et cetera. Since repeating an improvisation is a little hard, the way estampies typically go, the next improvisation builds on the previous. That's how it goes here, except that the cook confuses them ever so slightly. Oh, and this particular estampie is not improvised on the spot. It involves a little planning.
This is another movement in my Courtly Suite which I'm now close to finishing.
