Description
I woke up one Saturday morning back in January and saw someone had left a comment on the song “What Kind of Person Do You Want to Be?” The comment from morgan102 read;
Great message to all, especially the young. Now if we can come up with one about going outside and playing for an hour a day, lol.
My response read;
What a great idea! We will absolutely be writing the "get outside and play for an hour song!" And I will be sure to credit you when we post it! Thanks so much for commenting on this one and inspiring a future one!
As luck would have it that same Saturday I was meeting Bob (five_extra_arms) for lunch. I told him about the idea morgan102 had suggested and asked if he would supply the artwork and play synths on this one. Of course he generously agreed.
I brought the idea to David the following Monday. By then the title had occurred to me. David had wanted to take “Don’t Bully Me” in a heavy direction. So this time he was determined to go heavy. Okay then, I set upon writing some suitable heavy guitar riffs. By the time we had chance to schedule a writing session David had written several of the lyrics that appear in the final recording. We spent a few hours rearranging the lines and writing new ones to fit the main idea of each verse and the song form I brought to the session. We finished that afternoon recording several tracks of scratch vocals.
The next step was bringing it to my after school 5th grade enrichment students. Using the equipment from an elementary listening center (books on tape) I brought the students into my class where they sat around a USB mic while wearing headphones to record the chorus chant. The kids did a great job capturing the attitude I was looking for.
Now we needed a band. I asked Scott to supply drums. He quickly came through with a great track. The first take he submitted is the take you hear in the final mix. What a pro!
I’m not playing any heavy lead guitar as long as Sigmund is a member here. He graciously agreed to play all the guitar solos. He was so dedicated that when I asked if they could be wah-wah solos, he went out and purchased a new Cry Baby wah pedal. I just figured he’d use the auto-wah sim in GarageBand. But he went all out for this project. Just as Scott had done earlier, the first takes Sigmund delivered are what appear in this final mix.
Bob sent me several synth tracks. He gave me more than I could use. There was so much great material it was difficult to choose what not to use. I loved the way the synths liven the track. And of course, one of these posts would be incomplete without Bob’s charming artwork.
The final band member to sign on was Gaylen. There was no way I could post something this heavy without Gaylen’s distinct voice. And he nailed it just as I knew only he would!
Thanks so much to all the adults and students who worked so hard on this track. And many thanks to morgan102 for the inspiration that got the ball rolling.

Lyrics
Take It Outside
By D. Jorden & alackbass
I’m stuck in here going insane
Ten hours of the same game
My life is feeling real lame
No one but me to blame
I’ve gotta get away you see
My head is glued to this TV
Absorbing everything it say
X Box is all I play
I’m gonna take it outside
Take my bike for a ride
Have to get some fresh air
Show my body I care
I’m gonna take it outside
It’s a matter of pride
It’s a beautiful day
Go outside and play
So much outside that’s good for y’all
Soccer, tag, and even football
Go to a field take a swing or two
Running or jogging will get you through
Shoot some hoops or inline skate
Get off the couch and don’t you wait
It’s a public announcement you might not have heard
So we’re here to spread the word
I’m gonna take it outside
Take my bike for a ride
Have to get some fresh air
Show my body I care
I’m gonna take it outside
It’s a matter of pride
It’s a beautiful day
Go outside and play
Your body is a temple and you only get one
So you better treat it with some respect
Get up and get outside exercise can be fun
Or bad choices you will live to regret
You’re much too young to just lay around
Get yourself out there to the playground
Strong heart and lungs make a body great
Gain muscle, lose fat and a little weight
The choice is clear what you gonna do?
It’s decision time and it’s up to you
Shut off the games and pause that DVD
Put an end to childhood obesity
I’m gonna take it outside
Take my bike for a ride
Have to get some fresh air
Show my body I care
I’m gonna take it outside
It’s a matter of pride
